Lamb to the Slaughter

After reading the story, many of us focus on the calculated manner in which Mary Maloney acts in order to escape detection. I would like you to ponder this question "Was Mary guilty?" Think about our discussion of whether there was ever a "good enough" reason for murder. Was it the right thing for Patrick to leaver Mary (knowing she was 6 months pregnant with his child)? Was this betrayal enough of a reason to excuse Mary's emotional reaction to his news? In short...would you convict Mary Maloney of murder...why or why not? Remember, you may respond to my post or to any response by one of your classmates.

hello molly and kendall here!! just blogging about the blog(: We have been stenuously pondering this question for a few moments and have come to a scienitfic conclusion that there is a chemical unbalence in Mary's brain. She is as crazy as fish!! i mean who kills there husbands with a lamb leg???!! She needs to be checked into a mental institute A.S.A.P!

Well so long fellow jock hollow blogger...c ya monday!!!

Yes, Mary Maloney was guilty because even though Patrick was leaving her and she was pregnant she still had no reason to kill him. It was not the right thing for Patrick to leave Mary because she was 6 months pregnant with his child. This wasn't a good enough excuse for Mary to kill Patrick. Finally, i would convict Mary Maloney of murder because there is no reason for someone to kill another person even if the victim did hurt them like Patrick did to Mary.

In my defence i know it was wrong for Patrick to leave Mary while she was pregnant but it was also not the right choice considering she killed him. Yes i would convict Mary of murder because she did infact kill Patrick just because she was angry at him. I would have been mad and wanted to hurt him also, but i would have also tried to hold myself back.

Yes, Mary was guilty. Of course it wasn't the right thing for Patrick to be planning to leave Mary when she's about to have a baby, but she still killed him. Maybe he had been having a reeeally bad day at work that day and had been just over-reacting to whatever reason he was going to leave her and hadn't really finalized the plan to leave her. Maybe if she had waited until he cooled down, they could have talked about it and figured out a way to work out whatever problem they had. It could have all worked out and Patrick could have had more of a life to live, but now there obviously isn't even that small posibility. Of course, i don't think Mary is a cold hearted person and that she is truly happy that she killed him, I think she overreacted as well. As for whether I would have her convicted or not, I probably would figure out some other punishment. I would say that I would have her convicted after the baby is born, but that wouldn't be fair to the baby because it would have to live the first part of its life without its mother. i would think up some other logical and fair punishment.

No, I don't think Mary Maloney should be convicted of murder. I'm thinking no because her husband was walking out on her, 6 months pregnant, out of the blue. He said he would make sure she was looked after and everything but think, was she prepared? There were no mutual feelings, there was no warning, or slowly drifting apart, he just told her. She was simply waiting for her husband to get home, excited, and when he does he breaks her heart, just like that. Mary was in complete and utter shock when it happened, and should not be held responsible for her actions. At that moment she was slightly mentally unsteady and had no idea what was going to happen until she had already hit him and he was already dead.

I really do think Mary was guilty, but i do not think it was appropriate for her "husband" to leave her like that. She was 6 months pregnant and needed him. Even though the husband did try to leave her in her time of need, his actions does not override hers. I think this because though his news was bad, it left her living. There is never a good reason for murder. Overall I would convince Mary Maloney of murder. No one deserves to die. Mr. Maloney never gave a reason for his news, but he might have a good reason. Also there are many other ways to react to this sudden news. For example, she could have talked to him, or just dealt with it. Shattering his skull, by a frozen lamb, doesn't make anything better. This story really bugs me. I didn't like how she just acted as if it was shock to her that he was dead. Also how the cops didn't suspect her. I think that all murderers could be anyone, no matter what they look like. I wish this story would've ended by them catching her because i think of her as scum and nothing more. To summarize, i would convict Mary of murder.

I think that Mary Maloney is a murderer. She intentially killed her husband and it wasnt self defense or by aciident. Intentionally killing someone is always murder no matter what the circumstance.

hi=)ok I think Mary Maloney was accused of murder because she purposley killed her husband because she did not want him to leave her with the baby to take care of.

I dont think she should be convicted of murder because she was angry disipointed and frustrated with her husband, it wasent her fault he should have been nice to her. I thought he should have tried harder in there marrige! HE shouldnt have left her when she is 6 months pregant with his baby, what guy would do that. He deserved all of it !

garrettg said...

No, I wouldn't convict her for murder because he was being all bossy so he deserved to die. He didn't value his wife's life so his shouldn't be valued

I would konvict Mary Maloney for murder for the reason that she did kill her husband. I think it was wrong of her huisband to leave her while she was 6 months pregnant but thats no reason to kill him. I can understand how her temper could rise at the news of it but hitting someone with a lamp shank isnt the best way to deal with a situation like that. From that moment on she had to deal with the fact that she had taken someones life, although she didnt seem to unhappy about her accomplishment the guilt still hung there. For those reasons i would say that Mary Maloney is completely guitly for murdering her husband.

I would convict Mary Maloney because she didn't have a strong enough reason to murder her husband. He wanted to separate and she over reacted to that and yes, she was 6 months pregnant but she shouldn’t have killed him. After she killed him she acted completely normal like nothing ever happened and went to the market. When she returned she called the police because she “found her husband dead”. I think she’s guilty and sort of insane.

Of course she should be commited of murder!!! Why wouldn't she, she killed her husband with a lamb leg!? She took the life of someone else for the sake of her own. Even though she was six weeks pregnant and her husband was leaving her, gives her no right to kill him...Although she might of been angry she could of talked it over with her husband and figured the situation out. Either way she would of been without a husband dead or not.

i would definetly convist her of murder because she couldve talked to her husband and he might have been drunk the liqouir he was drinking sounded strong. - TommyK

Yes, I would convict Mary of murder. It was wrong of her husband to divorce her when she is 6 months pregnant. However, it does not give her the right to kill him. She only killed him out of anger there was no reason for doing it. She was just too frustrated and did not think, but that doesn't mean she is crazy it just means she is guilty.

i think mrs maloney is guilty.this is because she didn't have a good reason as to killing her husband. it's not like he was hurting her and she was defending herself.all he said was he was leaving her but that doesnt mean she should wack him in the back of the head a lamb leg and kill him. sure, it was wrong of him to leave her six months pregnant, but in no way should she have killed him.

Yes, Mary Maloney was guilty of murder. Even though her husband was leabing her, it was no reason for her to kill him. She just acted as if nothing hsd hsppened and then had the cops eat the murder "weapon." Also, she decided she wouldn't tell anyone she murdered him. She just sat back in her chair and startd sewing. However, it also was unfair of her husband to decide he was leaving her while she was expecting, but that is still no reason for murder. I would convict Mary Maloney guilty of murder.

YEA!! go christa buck!!! i convict Mary Maloney guilty. Although it was very wrong for her husband to suddenly divorce her while she was with child, but that is no cause for murder. Maloney overreacting to sudden divorce does not excuse her.

Of course she's guilty of murder, but can you honestly blame her? I mean, she was six months pregnant and her husband suddenly decides to leave her. She probably has anger issues but you can't expect her to be all smiles about it. One can only take so much. So, yes, she is guilty but she shouldn't be given too bad a sentence.

tbuckley said...

i bet she was just moody because she was pregnant. but yeah obviously she was guilty, she killed someone. but she should be able to spend a life with her baby. the baby didnt do anything wrong, it deserves to have a mom. so she should go to jail or get help until she has the kid.

Sarah :) said...

I think Maloney should absolutly be convicted of murder sure she had a right to be mad I mean she was pregnat and all but that is no reason to kill somone with a LAMB LEG then act so normal about it. She could of gone to court or somthing and gotten child support or watever her reason was defnatly not justified to kill.

Rachel said...

Yes, I think Mary Maloney is guilty. Just because her husband is leaving her, gives her no right to take away another life. Yes, it is cruel of the husband to leave her while she is pregnant, but who is she to murder him, and destroy his life over that? Murder, can't be justified.

Colin said...

i didagree with Beki, i think that it was okay that shew killed him and shouldn't be concidered murder, she was provoked

Meg said...

I dont think that Patrick should have just decided to leave when she waws pregnant, but she shouldnt have killed him. you dont just kill someone because they make you mad. she shouldnt have killed him, even though he was going to leave her. murder cant be justified.

Casey T. :D said...

I dont think that it was a good thing to leave the wife but i dont think it was a good idea to kill him. so its a win win situation, she is guilty of killing him but hes guilty of leaving her, espcally since shes 6 months pregnet with HIS child. i think i wouldn't confict Mary of murder because she cooked the weapon and that was really smart so i would never guess that she was the killer.

Bowen said...

i 100% agree with aralea. Just cause she was upset didnt give her a reason to kill him. He was probably leaving her to better her life and to make her happy. She then just randomly wacked him in the head with a leg of lamb. She should definitly be conficted with murder.

Julia :) said...

SHE'S GUILTY! When someone gets you mad, like a brother or sister, you want to hurt them and somtimes you do but hellloooo? Your not gonna kill them! What kind of freak does that. Now I understand that she probably didn't mean for the entire murder thing to happen. She loved this man and he sunddenly told her that she shouldn't bother making dinner for him because he's leaving her. Of course she would get angry, I mean she has their baby. But killing is wrong. If its by accident there's a one in a million chance it can be justified, but then if all of the sudden you go and pretend you didn't do it, you need to pay for what you've done.

Ernie Van Horton said...

I think that Mary should be put in jail because honestly, who kils a man with a lanb leg? Pardon me but I think they are used for eating although I would much perfer chicken bone but, you know, everyone has their favorites. AND, if killing him isn't bad enough, she feeds it to the cops and laughs. I'm worried about that phyco and I think that she may have problems but maybe thats just me.

Giannini50 said...

she was just upset. i would be too. she waits all day for her husband to come home and she makes him dinner, and a drink, and is just very happy being with him and if that jerk has enough nerve to dump her then and she was pregnant then she was probaly so caught up in the moment i wouldve done the same thing!

Joey M said...

No, I think Maloney should not be convicted of murder because she was pregnant and he was going to leave her. Also she was enraged and didn't think about killing him until he said he was going to leave her. I think she should be punished but not for murder.

Thibo Blogger said...

Yes Colin she was provoked, but, her killing him was taking it way too far. She could have just talked to her husband about it. She was crazy. And her giggling when the person said, "It's probobly right under our noses.", just makes her even crazier. And to TBuckly, just cause she was pregnant and moody doesn't mean she has the right to kill someone.

Thibo Blogger said...

So yes CONVICTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Claire:) said...

I definitely think that Mary is guilty. Even though Patrick was going to leave her when she had a baby on the way, there was no reason what so ever for her to murder him. It was wrong for him to leave her at this time, but she shoudn't have killed him. I would convict Mary Maloney of murder because she took that man's life away!

mrs.edwardcullen said...

I did not think Mary Maloney should have acted like she did. Maybe her husband thought he should leave her because he did not think he would make a great father. The author did not include what Patrick Maloney said to his wife so it could have been good or bad. You would think it would have been bad because of marys actions but still she had no right to kill her so calld husband with a leg of lamb!!! She is sooooo GUILTY!

Kendall <3 said...

wow this stroy kept me on my toes. i kept wondering what would happen next. Turns out I would have never gessed Mary to get away with a murder befor. But I do have to give her credit. She was pretty smart

Volman said...

i agree that she should be convicted of murder but shoud get a more lenient sentence because it was not a pre meditated murder it was a crime of passion. You cant really think of it as murder its more like murder, i dont think she actually thought a leg of lamb would kill him. She was just really angry and that was what she had with her. She probaly would have hit with whatever she had close, there was no intent to kill and should get a shorter prison term, and not be tried for murder but manslaughter.

Mariana said...

Yes, I do think that mary Maloney is guilty of murder. Instead of killing the guy with a leg of lamb she should of talked it out and come up with a solution.I mean even though he did leave her when she was 6 months pregnant dosnt mean she should kill him.He did say he would give her money and make sure she was taken care of.Mary is guilty and I dont think anyone should deny it!:)

BGallagher said...

I still think she is guilty. Yes it was wrong of her husband to leave her, but for her to kill him? Isn't that a little much? All he did was pretty much make her sad and angry, while she ended his life. Ya, it's a fair trade *sarcastically*.

In answer to Colin, if you look in a dictionary, the definition of "provoke" is to incite or stimulate someone or something to action. She still shouldn't have killed him. Alot of people are left just like this, but sometimes the person leaving doesn't help the person that they are going away from. Do they end up getting killed? Sometimes. But does the killer get arrested? Yes. So why should Mary not get arrested if they found out it was her?

Ian said...

I disagree with colin I think mary maloney was completely guitly because she went totaly Physco on her husband when he said he was leaving her (but she did pick a good murder weapon I mean who would ever suspect a frozen lamb leg?)But still Flat out murder is never really justified and she had no right to kill her huband like that. even though he was leaving her at a really bad time.

Ian said...

Garrett thats just cruel no one should die for just being bossy and if thats how it went alot of people would be dead right now.

Amanda_G said...

I disagree with colin, yes, she was slightly provoked, but not provoked to the extreme. He was leaving her, but that doesnt give her a right to kill him. And to those who say "but he was leaving her and she was pregnant", well, he still left her. Even though it has a slightly different impact on her life with all the investigators and murder tape thats probably surrounding the house, she had no reason to kill him. Many of you ask, "What about the baby?". Well, there are probably relatives to take care of the baby when it is born. I personally think Mary should have the baby, give the baby to a realative, go to jail for 4-5 years, then resume her not-so-normal life. i think that"s a pretty fair judgement.

mike said...

i think that Mary was guilty. Even though she just did it out of anger and maybe she didnt mean to kill him, she still did. Her husband was about to leave her while se was pregnant,so you can't blame her for being mad. She still commited murder though. That cant be justified.

JBruce said...

I would convict Mary Maloney of Murder because she overreacted dramatically to the fact that her husband was leaving him and must not have thought through it before she killed him.

And I don't know why but the second I saw the name "Mary Maloney" I knew she must be insane.(and I was right)

JMAC-per-8 said...

i think mary did not have the right thing by killing her husband because she was mad at him although he did something bad to mary. patrick deserved to get punished but i could have been less harsh

tooonniii! :] said...

i agree with sarah. i dont think she had any right to kill her husband. even though she was preganet, and it was kind of random to her that her husband wanted to divorce, it still gives her no right to kill her husband. she should get in troublee.

Jess said...

I agree with Beki. Her husband was leaving her, but that didn't give her any reason to kill him. She also may have mad a mood swing. Although, I don't think it was right for her husband to just come out and say "I'm leaving.", knowing that she was expecting a child. She didn't want anyone to know and to make sure she wasn't caught she had the cops eat the evidence/weapon. I would convict Mary Maloney guilty of murder.

CharlieM said...

I think that murder is wrong but Mary was just aggiated. She loved her husband so much caring for him and when he was trying to divorce her she took it like any one would exept a little more drastic. I agree with Areala and Colin but still that was wrong to kill him.

Bird is the word said...

I think Mary Maloney is guilty of murdering her husband. The husband was way out of line to decide to leave her when she is pregnant. But Mary didn't have to go pyshco and kill him. I would convict her because there is never a good reason for murder.

Briana C said...

i deffintly think mary is guilty! SHE KILLED HER HUSBAND, i call that crazy dont you? i mean i know she was pregnant and all but seriously come on women you dont need to kill your husband just find someone better! I would be mad but i doubt i would go phyco!!!!!

Maggie said...

I do think Mary Maloney was guilty. First, yeah it was wrong, he shouldn't have left her but killing isn't right no matter what. She shouldn't have gotten away with murder the man may have been a jerk but doesn't get her the right to kill him with... a lamb leg.

*Dana K.* said...

Yes, of course Mary Maloney was guilty! She was provoked, liked Colin said, but everyone else can keep their temper under control, why can't she? Hormones from pregnancy are not an excuse. She may have had an anger "flare up" but she should also have had a reasoning part of her mind. She was guilty, alright. Don't try to say otherwise.

Liam? said...

She is definitely guilty. She intentionally killed a man. There is no excuse for that. Maybe she was moody because of the pregnancy or maybe her husband was her only focus, but killing him was not justified. It was heat of passion though, so the sentence should be short.`

Yes, I would convict Mary Maloney of murder, because the whole time, all Mary was doing was being way too nice to them, almost as if she was trying to cover up something. She fed them the evidence(which also makes her guilty) and she offered the policemen or detectives drinks various times. If I was one of the cops, I would most definatly take her in for questioning.

This guy deserves it he was the one that agreed to death do us part when they were wed. God if i was her i would do the same thing but i wouldnt feed it to the cops or popo and GIGGEL thats pretty weird. Hey guys its chris. I'm gonna make this short and sweet. I would convict Mary Malony but not for murder. I would convict her for only manslaughter because she had a good reason to kill her husband. He was going to leave her when she was 6 months pregnant. I would let her off easy also because she was drunk from the whiskey they had before.

i agree with jess, while yes it was wrong for her husband to just come home and tell her hes leaving her with no toice at all, that by no means gives her the right to murder him. also, other than pure revenge and enjoyment there is no upside from murdering him. now theres no one to pay child support and help raise the baby. i would have been better off if she had just tried to understand.

Mary's actions were completely justified! What kind of man leaves his wife for another woman while his wife is pregnant with his baby? A jerk! A jerk that got exactly what he deserves.
