Going for the Perfect Tan

Americans, and young Americans especially, tend to overexpose themselves to the radiation of the sun.  From summers spent out by pools to those tomblike tanning beds before cruises and proms, Americans are being exposed to more and more of the effects of sunlight.  This article shares some new medical info on the practice of tanning just in time for summer.

Thankfully for me, I don't tan. My skin ether is the why it is or its sun burnt. What happens with me is I stay out side in the sun for just as long as other people, but my skin goes strait to a burn.

I don't see why people have to tan themselves on purpose. Usually if I'm outside in the summer, I'm in the sun for a couple hours at a time but, I'm doing something. The reason you tan is because the sun's radiation is burning your skin and causing skin cancer with I find scary.

One think that interested me but did not surprise me in this article, was when the author stated that the tanning bed industry does not advertise the downfalls of going in a tanning bed, it just lies about "benefits". I think if they posted this article on the inside top of tanning beds than maybe the amount of melanoma patients would decrease. For example, if they told people that "the dramatic increase in melanoma cases among young women is partly due to their increasing usage of tanning beds. . . . that the increase in indoor tanning bed usage is one of the main reasons for the rise in the number of melanoma cases in America. . . .Sixty thousand people are diagnosed with melanoma each year in the USA - one American dies every hour from the disease." I think if people read these facts, results of studies, and statistics, than they would understand the risks they are putting on themselves and their body and they might stop using this death trap.

I think there should be warning labels on tanning machines and in tanning salons. Cigarettes and alcohol come with warning labels, and people think fast food should, too. If tanning is as unsafe as this article says, then I think people should be warned before tanning. Sixty thousand people are diagnosed with the disease of melanoma every year, and one person dies from it every hour. Melanoma is a type of deadly skin cancer which is caused by tanning. Therefore, since tanning is so dangerous, tanning machines and salons should have warning labels

Emerson18 said...

@ Anonymous I agree with you that people should learn more about tanning before doing it. If people knew the facts, such as the increase in melanoma in young women is because of tanning beds, that melanoma is the most common type of cancer for 25 through 29 year olds, and that sixty thousand people are diagnosed with melanoma every year, and one dies from it every hour, not as many people would tan. However, since the advertisements just state the "benefits" and don't state the dangers, people are still getting harmed from tanning. Therefore, people should learn more about tanning before they tan because of how dangerous it is.

I think that this article was very interesting. I myself don't tan and I don't plan on it anytime soon. What I believe is that tanning in the sun is actually safer than tanning in a tanning bed, yet both cause skin cancer. I really don't see the point of using a tanning bed if both can cause something that can kill you.

KirillR98 said...

@Emerson18
I agree with you because you said that there should be warning labels on tanning machines and tanning salons. This is very true because around sixty thousand (60,000) people are diagnosed with melanoma every year and one person dies from this every hour. So why would people even dare go tanning if they know the risks and the possibility of them becoming the next person diagnosed with melanoma.

Beethoven Virus said...

I think that they should only let people over 29 to use tanning beds. I think they should do that because it says that people who are 15 to 25 are more found to have melanoma then people under 15 of people over 29. I think that they shouldn't have tanning bed in the first place because they are producing a fake kind of sun light which is harmful to the skin.

Honestly, I don't understand the purpose of tanning. I remember in Jamaica I didn't plan on tanning at all. I was just active and had a lot of swimming time and running on the beach and I got quite a tan! But this year in Costa Rica, I decided to try tanning on purpose, and the results were not the same. Yes, I got color but definitely not enough where a good amount of beach time was take away from me! Tanning should be a natural thing to do in life and not on purpose. I guess Snooki had her impact on society in this way.

AVgleek17 said...

@Emerson18,
I have to disagree with you. I feel like a warning label on a tanning booth would stop barely anyone from tanning. Think about it, millions of people smoke and drink, and I've seen cigarette boxes with SMOKING KILLS written all across the box. Yes, just stating the benefits is very very bad, but listing the harmful items would not be enough to sop this occur acne from happening.

I don't tan a lot. sometimes i get a little tan in my arms, legs, and face but that is natural. There are a lot of girls in middle school that try to tan them selves a lot. This just makes the,m look a little weird and can harm them. With my families ethnic background my skin will burn easily so I have to look out for skin deceases such as melanoma. People need to take care of themselves because everyone is different and their skin has different needs.

blah blah blah said...

I think that tanning marks you out as an incredibly vain person. For example, not only are you too lazy to get a real tan, but you value your looks above your health. Tanning beds are commonly known to be a cause of skin cancer, melanoma. Therefore, to use tanning beds marks you out as a person who values their looks above their health and wealthfare, an incredibly self-obsessed person.

Muffin Man 101 said...

@Emerson 18
I understand you idea but, I don't think that a warning label will do much because they are already there and a label isn't going to stop them. There are label on other things but that doesn't stop them from drinking and smoking. We need to do thinks that are more serious like trying to get rid of tanning beds or make commercials about the dangers of them. Some people get addicted to tanning like that lady that brought her daughter into a tanning bed. People need to be more aware about their dangers.

blah blah blah said...

@Beethoven Virus
I disagree with you when you say that they should ban people between 15-29 from tanning because melanoma is most prevalent in 15-29 year olds. This is becuase melanoma is most common in this age group not becuase of their age, but becuase of their particluar fondness of tanning beds. Therefore, I have to disagree with you when you say that tanning should be banned in people 15-29 simply because of their age.

I tan by just playing with my little brother and sisters. My friend is always in a tanning mood. She LOVES it soo much. I think tanning beds are extremely bad for you. "I don't think teens realize the consequences associated with tanning beds," said iCarly actress Miranda Cosgrove, who is a new celebrity spokesperson for Neutrogena's sun safety campaign.
Not even teens don't realize the consequences with tanning beds, adults too. Do you really need a tan that bad... you may look good with a golden tan but it hurts your skin. Teens shouldn't sign their parents name for tanning beds.

Kayleigh said...

@Emerson18
I see what your saying but most people aren't going to read some label about why this is bad. People don't think of consquences before they do something. This wouldn't effect the lives of others.

Grace S. said...

Tanning in the sun isn't nearly as bad as tanning at a tanning salon. Tanning beds can cause and are causing so many people to get skin cancer. A lot of people are aware of this, but still use them anyways and choose not to face what is actually happening in reality. Some just do it because tanning in the sun takes too long, so going to the salon is "quicker". But they don't actually realize how dangerous it can be, just by laying in a tanning bed for a short period of time. I think that people should be a lot more cautious when they do this, and should stop running these salons.

Ghost said...

I do not think that tanning is the answer to looking nice. What people should really be focused on is their weight, that is America's real problem. If you really need a tan so badly I think spray tan would be a lot better.

Indeed... said...

I don't think tanning is a good thing because of skin conditions can come of it and your skin can just look nasty after a while. Skin cancer is an attribute of tanning, that can kill your skin cells making your skin even worse than before you started, also it can lead to death. Also, even if you don't get skin cancer your skin can start to shrivel due to the radiation, and speed up the aging process.

Ryan35 said...

Tanning is not good. It causes skin cancer. I was not surprised to find out that the tanning bed industry did not tell people how dangerous tanning is. I think this because in the article, it said the around 30,000,000 people tan themselves using the beds. They would make a lot of money so why should they tell you how bad it is? They don't care about your health, just about the money you spend. That's why I wasn't surprised to find that out.

Ryan35 said...

@Indeed...
I agree with you that tanning is bad. It doesn't look great because it looks so fake. Also, it does speed up the aging process. Most people use the tanning beds too look younger and better. However, when you use it, you will get older quicker so it pretty much negates that aspect and it also greatly increases your chance of getting melanoma, a deadly disease. This makes me wonder why people use the beds.

sethblog said...

When I tan, It doesnt take that long, but even if i stay out for a while, it is hard for me to burn. And When i do burn, it hurts for a day or two, and then it turns into tan. But I do not like the idea of tanning beds or even spray tanning. Tanning beds cant heat up too muck because you are in a concealed space, and they RECOMMEND that you wear the eyes could get eye goggles. but if you dont you could damage your eyes by opening them. And spray tanning is spraying chemicals on to your body. You are pretty much spray painting yourself and sometimes it comes out orange so it doesnt even look real

sethblog said...

@Grace S.
I agree with you. Tanning beds release release rays that are causing people to get skin cancer. Either take some time in the sun or risk getting skin cancer. If they had a law about how many times you can tan in say a year, it would limit people to go to a salon, lowering the risk of skin cancer

marktex5025 said...

After reading this article, I think there should be a limit on how often you can use (any) tanning bed anywhere because of how bad your health can become. The number of people with skin cancer has increased a lot because of them, and also, one person dies an hour due to melanoma, a very bad type of skin cancer, because of these tanning beds. Therefore, people shouldn't use tanning beds as often because it can lead them to die of skin cancer.

marktex5025 said...

@indeed...
I definitely agree that tanning from the tanning beds is terrible because your skin becomes disgusting from them anyways. After coming out from a tanning bed, you look as orange as a carrot, which is not attractive at all, even though these tanners must think it is! So not only do these tanning beds affect your health, but they make you look terrible too! Therefore, if you're trying to become prettier, tanning beds are not the solution because it won't be worth it for health purposes, but also because you will not look nearly as pretty as you did before.

abc123comewithme said...

I think that this should be thought of as cigarettes; you know that tanning is bad for you but you want to do it any way. now there is no addictive substance in tanning but you want to look cool like everyone else. Like in the article it says that they are false advertising AND putting models on their advertisments. this problem should be taken seriously be cause our youth (15-29) is dying because of skin cancer and melanoma all because they want to be like super models

abc123comewithme said...

i totally agree with you the girls that tan way too much or go to a tanning salon almost look orange like this woman! http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4nyw3GdJs1qj7gpko1_400.jpg
so a healthy tan is a natural one. don't lay out in the sun all day!

I was very surprised when I read this article. Melanoma is a disease you get when you tan in a tanning bed. One person dies every hour from this disease. Many American's use tanning beds, 10% do. Tanning beds aren't the only reason people are getting skin cancer, tanning at outside or in the natural sun. I think that American's should stop tanning or limit there tanning to a few times a year.

Marissa S. said...

@marktex5025
I agree with you. American's should limit there use of tanning beds. People are getting very sick or even cancer from tanning. Is be tan really worth getting all these different diseases? It is important that people realize that they can get very sick or even die from tanning.

I think if its so bad then why is it that they havent band it, if it causes cancer and they know that then why ues it. Alot of people can get some more easly acording to there ethnic group and geans. So you should know your limits and not try to tan yourself on perpose because all your doing is burnung yourself and increaseing the chance of getting some type os sickness like Melanoma.

I agree with "Indeed" when they said "I don't think tanning is a good thing because of skin conditions can come of it." I agree with this statement because it is accurate and very true. I think this because -referring back to the article- it states true facts on the risks of skin tanning. For example, "Rogerio Neves, professor of surgery, dermatology, pharmacology and medicine, says that the increase in indoor tanning bed usage is one of the main reasons for the rise in the number of melanoma cases in America." This fact proves my point in how it demonstrates the risks you are taking when you go tanning.

AnCh373 said...

I do not think tanning is a good idea because it hurts your skin and it makes you look bad. I saw on television about a mom getting so much tan from tanning beds that her skin is a dark orange which really, in my opinion, looked horrible. I think tanning, especially in a bed/booth, is a really bad thing to do to your skin because it only makes it worse.

Jessm said...

I think tanning beds should be banned because of how dangerous they are. One person will die every hour from diseases caused from tanning. That alone should be enough warning. You will automatically get color on your skin when the sun is bright, so there is no need for tanning beds. If tanning beds are banned then less people will be diagnosed with skin cancer. You might look good for a few month but in a year or to when you're sitting in the hospital you'll regret it. Tanning should at least be limited and since you can't stop people from sitting in their yards for a few hours in the sun everyday then tanning beds should be banned because of the danger in tanning.

Jessm said...

I agree with JHERRERA when you said people should know their limits when tanning. Tanning is extremely dangerous and most people's skin is likely to just burn if they tan. I also agree that people should not tan purposely. Your skin will naturally become tan by spending time outside, so there's no need to put yourself in danger by laying in the sun baking your skin, because it will damage.

Grace S. said...

@Marissa S
I definitely agree with your statement. Both salon tanning and regular outdoor tanning are very bad for you. I think limiting the amount of how much people tan is a good idea. This would help decrease the risk of skin cancer over the world. However, I guarantee that some people would ignore these limits and go tan as much as they want. If this actually happened, then salons should stop running their businesses so much due to the fact of diseases and dangerous effects that it is all having on people.

AnCh373 said...

@AVgleek17
I agree with you, tanning should not be done on purpose, but naturally because it looks better that way. Anyway, tanning on purpose never looks good because it usually ends up tanning to much even if you put on sunscreen. Everyone with delicate skin has to wear sunscreen and they still burn in the sun, so why ever try to tan on purpose?

kevin 0 said...

I think that tanning on purpose is not a very good idea. I think this way for a couple reasons, one it is very unhealthy and could give you skin cancer, two you can get sunburn and it is very had to even sleep while having sunburn because of the pain of just covers touching it, and three it might look better than a spray tan but why waste time sitting in the sun, lathering yourself in sunscreen, and possibly giving yourself sunburn. This is why I don’t think purpose sunbathing is appropriate.

When im usually outside in the sumer, I am in my pool, playing witch my dogs, or playing a sport. This means that i get alot of sun and that im tan just by doing these things. BUt sometimes when there is nothing else to do that day and I just got out of the pool, i usually sit in the sun todry off. BUt i dont do that often so i wont get sun cancer witch i heard about can start from age 8 from tanning. This is why I dont tann in the summer and no one else should etither.

I don't tan easily so there isn't much for me to worry about. If I go to a place like Florida or California I get more of a tan, but in CT its not as bad.I no cancer is unforgiving and takes things from people who really need them. My cousin was diagnosed with leukemia, and then died. So for all you kids that love your tanning booth try not too use it as much, I may not know you but a person is a person no matter what.

Glant said...

@Nosferactu
I agree with you. Most kids and teens spend their time outside playing and running around. If you do stop to dry off in the sun or to get a little tan, it may not hurt you. In the case you do don't just sit there for a couple hours or your life could be in big trouble.

I think that tanning beds and other forms of this artificial tan is not needed because the sun exposer you get on a daily bases is already higher than it already should be. "With the tanning industry is a multi-billion dollar business that, according to a Congressional Report published on February 1, targets teenage females with promotions and advertising. The Report accuses the industry of denying the known risks, providing inaccurate and false data on tanning benefits, and does not follow FDA recommendations on how often people should tan." stated by Medical News Today. This tanning industry is a growing problem and for many people this seems to be the same story as the tobacco market years ago. Today the tobacco market is a multi-billion dollar industry that is taking the lives of millions of people every year. If this tanning industry does not stop then it will turn into the same story as the tobacco market and will also have the same effects killing millions of people every year from cancer, etc... just like the tobacco market did. Therefore that is why i think the tanning industry should be stop completely or just control so people will not get hurt and get the same effects that the tobacco market did years ago.

Language Arts Student said...

Heres an example drugs, some cause cancer and other sickness so they were made ilegal. The same concept aplies to the tanning beds." i thought that brought up a good point because even when the tobacco market was started it was not controlled and no one really cared what it does to your body. Until millions of people died and the people of the world noticed that we should control this and even make it illegal in so places. If tanning beds are not stopped, controlled or made illegal then lots of people with died and with any other new thing that will come out that is harmful will be the same old story. Therefore that is why i think that tanning beds are bad but more importantly things that can kill you over time should controlled and monitored by the people so they don't die of things that they did not need.

I found this article very interesting. When you tan in tanning beds you are in risk of getting Melanoma. One American dies every hour from this very harmful disease. Also, Sixty thousand people are diagnosed with melanoma each year in the USA. This is a huge number that could be changed if people did not use tanning beds. This is very serious and before people use tanning beds they should take this into consideration.

There seems to be a large desire in the caucasian populations of the world to darken their pale skin. The bad part though is what this article shows, that people are using tanning beds, because people are exposing themselves to harmful radiation. The only safe way to tan is by using sunless tanners. I went to the Mayo Clinic website and found this article, http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sunless-tanning/SN00037/NSECTIONGROUP=2 . In here it says that tanning lotions and sprays are a safe alternative to tanning beds and the outdoors. So if you want to tan the only safe way to do so is through sunless tanning sprays and lotions because they do not expose your skin to radiation.

G-MAN said...

@Language Arts Student
I agree with you that the tanning industry is a mini tobacco industry because it is a giant promoting a harmful product. Tanning beds are known to cause cancer and have been labeled as a carcinogen just like cigarettes. The only real way you can naturally tan while remaining moderately safe is by sun tanning while wearing sun screen. The sunscreen protects you from some radiation while slowly letting you tan. The reason this is often better than a bed is because you will have a harder time becoming sunburned. Either way actual tanning is very dangerous. The only real way to not hurt yourself is to fake tan, with lotions or sprays. Either way, the evergrowing tanning industry is pushing itself into the young and middle aged populaion and convincing many to partake in its dangerous enterprise.

MRAjGE said...

I have never used a tanning bed and don't plan on using one ever. First of all, my skin gets tan enough for me in regular sunlight without having to use a fake source of light. Plus tanning beds are disgusting and senseless. Who would want to spend their time lying in a machine when they could be spending time outside getting NATURALLY tan? In addition, the damages that tanning booths can cause are numerous. Tanning beds cause Melanoma. Melanoma, a "fatal form of skin cancer", is the most common cancer for 25 to 29 year olds. The tan that people get from tanning beds look fake, orangey, and funny. Why would you want to be seen like that!? Therefore I will save myself a lot of damage and humiliation by getting a natural tan.

Lauren said...

I think that spray tanning and tanning beds are a waste of money as well as it damages your skin. Melanoma is the most common cancer for teens close to are age, that's why I feel tanning beds should have an age restriction. Also I never use spray tan or tanning bed because first off it's bad for your skin and also it looks to unnatural. I get tan enough from being outdoors in the natural sunlight. If people are still going to use tanning beds then they should have some kind of warning label on the tanning beds themselves or on the front door of the salon. Therefore if people want to get tan then they should do it in the natural sunlight and try to save themselves for getting skin cancer aka Melanoma.

Lauren said...

@ Marissa I agree with you because if Americans who used tanning beds limit themselves they could not only save their own life and money; but also set somewhat of an example for another person to try to stop using tanning beds. When you use a tanning bed it increases your risk for skin cancer and you wasting your money to get the perfect, unnatural tan. Even when being out side, you don't have to lay in the sun to get tan. Sometimes it's easier to get darker by being active outside.

ShyWolf32 said...

I think people should not use tanning beds to often. This is because in the article it said that a certain kind a skin cancer has become more come in past few years because of this I believe that there should be a limit of how much you can use a tanning bed in a certain amount of time. This wouldn't stop the problem because some people just get tan from going to the beach and stuff but it might decrease the problem slightly.

ShyWolf32 said...

@Lauren I agree with you that tanning beds and spray tans are a waste of money and should have a age limit, though spray tan doesn't really tan you though so that isn't a cause of that cancer. Time limits should also be placed for the taning beds as well as the age restrictions. This wouldn't stop this cancer but it will put a denet in the numbers.

ghostly said...

I'm glad I can't tan and instead get sunburn now that I have read this article.
The reason why is because it said in the article that no tan is a safe tan and that for women you are 8 times more likely to get skin cancer if you tan then if you don't and that for men you are 4 times more likely to get skin cancer if you tan then if you don't.

ghostly said...

@ShyWolf32
I agree with you that there should be a time limit on tanning beds.The reason I agree is because the longer you are in a tanning bed the more likely you are to get skin cancer.

JMM126 said...

I already knew that any tan isn't safe because my grandmother had melanoma and almost died. The UV rays burn and tan which can give us freckles, which can turn to melanoma. And I am still going to tan normal because Vitamin D is also healthy for you, just not too much. I never had an interest in tanning beds because I figured that if people are freaking about the o-zone layer breaking apart and the UV rays coming in more, then if they are right next to you only beating against you, it cant be good. Therefore, I will only tan from the sun and that is why.

JMM126 said...

@ghostly
You can still get melanoma from burning, you still have the same amount of UV rays hitting your skin. It's actually worse if you burn because then you can also get sun poisoning. People who usually get melanoma are pale, so they don't tan. Therefore, you can still get melanoma if you burn, not tan.

Anirbas said...

I think that use of tanning beds should be limited, and there should be an age limit on it. Tanning is dangerous, and it increases the risk of melanoma, a fatal type of skin cancer. Young people may feel like it makes them look better, but it shouldn't be used irresponsibly, if they are used at all. Because they are causing people to get deadly cancer, and die, there should be more limitations on who is allowed to use a tanning bed, and how often.

Anirbas said...

I agree with ShyWolf who said people should not use tanning beds that often. Tanning is harmful and causes melanoma, which causes at least one person to die every hour. It is very dangerous and should be limited.

Pandanut12 said...

I think that tanning should be illegal in the US and other countries because it puts forth horrible risks for the sake of cosmetics. Since the tanning bed became popular after the 1970s, the risk of skin cancer went up, mainly a fatal form called melanoma, eight times in women and four times in men. It is now the most common type of cancer in 15-29 year olds, and one person dies of it every hour. Therefore if tanning beds weren't allowed the melanoma statistics would go down, which is why tanning should be illegal.

I knew that to much sun tanning would result to skin cancer before this article. What I learned was that "10% of America's population, 30 million people, use tanning beds annually. They have long been linked to an increase in skin cancer." I can not believe that thatmany people use tanning beds. Talking about tanning beds, I know that this was a big deal for a while about the mother that toook the girl into the tanning booth with her. The mother has been tanning for about ( I am not sure if it is true) but 20 years. Antother thing that I learned from this article is " Up to 80% of tanning salon clients are female." I knew that most of them are female, but I did not know that that much was. Most females want the perfect tan for the summer and they would do anything for it! That is what I have learned from this article.

Pandanut12 said...

@Anirbas
I agree with you because tanning makes people feel better about themselves only until they get the lab tests back. This is because though people might look better with a tan, tanning increases the risk of melanoma, a fatal form of skin cancer that has already made it's way to the most common type. After tanning beds became popular, the risk of melanoma increased eight times in women and four times in men. Tanning salons put cosmetics before the well being of their patients, which is why I agree with you.

I agree with you that people should not use tanning booths/beds anymore. It is easy to say but hard to do. I feel that using tanning beds is just like smoking, you are addicted because you see how nice your skin looks after one try and you just keep on doing it. I think that a way to somehow decrease the amount of patients for tanning beds is to allow them to read and research about how doing this is bad for them. Then, they would know that they should not do it anymore of decrease that amount of appointments that they have a week, a month, or a year. That is why and how I agree with your comment.

I agree there is huge popularity for tanning beds in the US and around the world. For example the article states that 10 percent of Americans use tanning beds. That is a large amount and many of those people will probably be diagnosed with melanoma and could potentially die. Over 30 million people use tanning beds annually which is unsettling. Some of those people might not even know what they are doing to their bodies which could lead to a lot of preventable deaths if there was more awareness. Therefore in the near future I think we need to educate people of the harmful things tanning beds do to their body so they're not so many cases of skin cancer and melanoma.

I think that tanning is good-if you do it naturally by sitting in the sun with sunblock. But I think that tanning in a tanning bed is a bad idea. This is because you can get serious and deadly diseases. One disease is called Melanoma and its the most common disease because of spray tans and tanning beds. So that is why I think that tanning in a tanning bed and spray tan is bad.

I don’t think they should completely ban tanning beds. It’s true that they can cause skin cancer, I did a speech on this topic last year, but it is honestly the person’s decision whether or not they want to damage their skin. Using a tanning bed once will not give you cancer, so if you need to get tan before a dance or before vacation to get used to the sun is okay. I know many times when I’ve gone on vacations in April or May, I got sun poisoning because my skin wasn’t used to the sun yet. Also, removing tanning beds would create fewer jobs. That is one of my sister’s jobs. I agree that sun can cause damage to the skin, but we can’t control being in the sun and getting burned or tanned. We can be cautious but not control it.

I agree with you because people shouldnt spend alll day in the sun because were not in a perfect world theres something called cancer and a lot of people get it because of baking themselves in the sun. You should get a tan because youre outside doing something not laying on a towel or on your deck starting to get cancer at a early age. This is why I agree with you.

@Pandanut12 I disagree with you because tanning beds shouldn’t be illegal. Yeah, people can get skin cancer but not all people do from tanning beds. Also, some people need to tan to get their skin used to the sun before going on vacation so they don’t burn or get sun poisoning which has happened to me. Most people don’t do it every day. People should be cautious of the risk of getting cancer from tanning beds. That doesn’t mean you need to make it illegal. That’s like saying people die from smoking and drinking, so this should be illegal and lot of people die in car accidents, so driving should be illegal. Therefore, I disagree with you that tanning beds should be illegal.

I think that using the sun to tan is fine but tanning beds are not. This is because out in the sun, if you put sunscreen on and still get tan, you are doing it naturally. If you go into a tanning bed I know that it is unsafe and you are using superficial ways to make you body tanner. During school we have always heard lectures and speeches about why tanning beds are bad for you. This I know i will never do. Therefore, I do not see why it is wrong to get a little tan from the sun if you were using sunscreen.

Ali M. said...

I do not think that tanning beads should be illegal because it is peoples own decision if they want to use them or not. I just think that people should be warned of the consequences. Before you go into a tanning slalom there should be many waivers you have to sign informing you of the risks you are taking. If still after being warned if people over 18 still want to go tanning it is their deception. If they want to get skin cancer we warned them, so they should have the freedom to do whatever they want. I think we should try to have people not use tanning beads, but we should not make they illegal.

These tanning beds are quite dangerous. Yet they are still full use throughout the society. They are like cigarettes because in both cases you use them to feel better or cooler and soon you get addicted to it like nicotine. Soon these things start to kill us and create diseases. Yet this can be avoided if these people did it in moderation or not at all. But it is not only their fault they should put some warnings on the machines(which they don't). It like cigarettes again because they used to never put warning on the boxes and people would smoke up to three packs a day. So therefore should put always put a warning sign and be cautious.

Man on the Moon said...

I agree with Ali M. because they shouldn't be illegal because it is not like it is marijuana and it instantly hurt you. But people should be warned and very cautious. I say cautious because it isn't terrible to go to the tanning salon once in a while to look a little better or look more natural. But do it in moderation because it is like anything else too much isn't good for you. Also if we warn them we have done our part as the tanning salon to warn them but people also have to be cautionary. It is like saying that violence gene will make everyone who inherits it from there parents not liable for killing people or assaulting them. So therefore people have be liable for there own actions if there is a warning and have a choice.

ZAMZAM said...

People know the risks of tanning beds, but they use them anyway. They know the risk of not wearing a helmet too, or not wearing a seatbelt, or drinking under-age, or bungee jumping, etc. The fact of the matter is, people are too stubborn to give up on what they want or what they believe even when they know it can kill or harm them. If they want to be tan, then they use a tanning bed. Simple as that. Although PA's intentions are good and it is trying to limit the amount of tanning bed usage by discussing it with the members of the House and Senate, it is not working. The people want what they want, aware of the risks. I don't believe that they could make them stop.

I do not understand what is so great to have a tan. Really it is just your skin becoming darker because of harmful ray from the sun.Some might argue that I'm just saying this because I just can't tan but really it seems almost as dangerous as smoking if you do it too often. I especially think that artificial tanning is unhealthy. I don't understand exactly how it works but getting in a bed that tans your skin with lights to make sunlight does not seem safe.

Cav98 said...

@anonymous
I agree with you that People should learn more about the risks of a tanning bed before stepping into one. I think this because if they all knew the risks they would tan as much. Why would anyone go tanning when they know it can cause a dangerous form of cancer. I was amazed by the number of people taken by melanoma. I wasn't a big tanner before this article but now i really understand how dangerous it is.

I think that it isn't ok for people to use tanning. Ed's for tanning. I think this because it is very harmful to do it this way. I think it is good to sit out in the sun to tan. I think this because it is natural this way.

Avacado said...

Personally, I think that tanning unnaturally is plain dumb. All you get out of it is a artificial colored you and a higher risk of skin cancer. I think that tanning in the sun is good for you, but not to much. Too much tanning can cause many skin issues, but sitting in the sun time to time can be a good thing, and can help you get more nutrients you need such as vitamin D. I have seen many people before that have artificial tans and look just plain orange. That has to be unhealthy. In conclusion, I think that it is not a good idea at all to tan, unless you do it naturally just for some extra vitamin D.

Avacado said...

@ Ryan,
I agree with you that my skin is naturally the way it is, and if anything, is barely tanned from the sunlight. I would never be dumb enough to use a tanning bed, and a spray tan is no better. A spray tan coats you in chemicals, and makes you look orange, not tan! I think that you should let yourself tan naturally, and take in the vitamin D your body needs. For example, the kids in All Summer In A Day used a artificial light for sun, but that is so they can get the vitamin D their bodies need, because in the story the sun only comes out every several years. In addition, some people tan more than others, but that is how life works. Be okay with it. It is better than being a orange person with skin cancer. In conclusion, I agree with you that you should only tan naturally, and that being tan should be natural, not artificial.

I know that teens are very careful about what color their skin is and they want to be the tannest out there but ask your self this, would you rather die of cancer because you sat out in the deadly sun's rays or would you put sunscreen on and protect yourself and not get skin cancer. I know I would rather put sunscreen on. I see many people with terrible skin because they have been out in the sun too long and I have other people with not so tan skin but they do not have skin cancer. So next time you go to tan on the beach wear sunscreen.

Logan S. said...

I agree with you chocolate because what is the point of tanning when you can be hanging with your friends on a walk or in the water swimming but when your on the beach just laying there, your gonna get burnt and possibly get skin cancer. I would rather protect my skin rather than get skin cancer and maybe die.

Fred said...

I do not know why people have such a need for tanning. I know it's strange to be as pale as a ghost, but that's just who you are. If someone has such a need to tan that they will risk dying for it, it is their own fault. It is sad to say, but survival of the fittest and if people choose to look good over survival, that is their own choice.

Fred said...

@chocolate
I absolutely agree with you that if you're going to tan, do it naturally. Why go to a tanning salon and pay money to put your life at risk? I'm sure that probably everyone who has skin cancer due to this reason regrets artificially tanning. This is not something that you can take back so why do it in the first place.

StephanieZ said...

I think that everybody should use sunscreen when they are outside, no matter what. You want to be tan? Fine, that's no problem. Sunscreen blocks the sun's radiation rays from burning your skin and eventually leading to skin cancer. You will still tan even if you have sunscreen on, so why not? That is why I believe that all Americans should always wear sunscreen.

StephanieZ said...

@Ali M...
I agree with you. I also do not think that tanning beds should be illegal because it the person's choice to make. As you said, they should definitely be sure that they know all the consequences that come with it, but they should still have the opportunity to do it. That is why I agree with your comment.

I admit, I am guilty of using tanning beds and spray tanning. I think being tan is a good thing and makes people look better when they are tan. Yes,there are medical concerns but we are aware of them. If we were that worried, we wouldn't use tanning beds or spray tan. Right now, I'm still young and don't really care. As I get older I don't want skin cancer or anything else and I probably will stop going for my health. At the same time, I know all cancer is bad, but I have several family members get skin cancer and they are perfectly fine. I think skin cancer is easy to cure. I don't think going for a couple years when you are young will cause damage.

Anonymous said...

@Pandanut12, I disagree with you. I don't think tanning should be illegal. It's a free country and people can do whatever they want. I know that there are risks from tanning, but most things in life come with risks. Tanning is perfectly okay if you are being careful. That is why I disagree with you, people are allowed to do what they want. So tanning shouldn't be illegal.

I think tanning is awful and no one should do it. Not only does it have bad effects like cancer, it's a waste of time and money. You could just go to the beach and get a natural tan while having fun or you could just not tan at all and just have your natural skin color.

alcatrazjail said...

@Logan S. I agree with you. They should think about cancer and other long-term effects before tanning. If they tan and get addicted to it they might die a couple years later while they're still young because of skin cancer.

Simeong said...

Tans are bad for your body but it's good to get some tans here and there but if it gets to addicting then as you start to age your skin turns rinkly, you could be 40 and look 70 this is why I don't like to get tans every week. Plus it's just a wast of money when you could just sit in your backyard and get a tan without worrying about the money issue.

Imagine11 said...

I also believe that tanning just to get a tan is not a very smart idea because mostly, you end up either getting sunburned and will be more prone to skin cancer. One fact from the article states that, "Dermatologists from Penn State University say that a safe tan does not exist." Also according to the article, "The incidence of melanoma, a fatal form of skin cancer, was eight times higher among women and four times higher among men in 2009 compared to 1970." Therefore, since tanning is basically another form of getting skin cancer, i think people should just go outside to have fun not directly lay out in the sun or tanning bed and ruin your skin.

Imagine11 said...

@AVgleek17
I also don't understand the purpose of tanning because you can do all these other things outside than just lay down and wait for a tan. You said that, I was just active and had a lot of swimming time and running on the beach and I got quite a tan!" you also said that, "Tanning should be a natural thing to do in life and not on purpose." therefore, since I also think that we should be enjoying our time outside, not just laying around for a tan, I agree with your comment.

If people want to be tan, they should spray tan. They're tons of products that will give your skin a tanner appearance available to everyone. Risking your life and you skin just to be darker over the summer is not very smart at all. I don't understand why even when people raise so much awareness about the danger of something that is easily avoidable they do it anyway. There is nothing wrong with wanting to change your appearance to however you like but, people should use the proper methods that won't harm themselves. That is the only thing I disagree with in this article because they say a safe tan doesn't exist. It does. It just may be fake.

@ Marisa S

I disagree with you when you say that America should limit tanning beds. Why? Who cares? If people can make a profit of of other people's naivety, then why shouldn't they? In America, the land of the free, we can chose to make the decision about our bodies as we please(mainly). If the media is selling tan, and people are buying the tan look, that's just life. There is enough awareness all over the media. In every magazine and in every article about summer it says,"Don't tan." It's not like big business are trying to cover up the fact that tanning is bad for you. They just offer it. Many people in America can be kind of ignorant at times and either ignore the warning labels or just not read them. However, that's jus that way it is. I wish I was making millions off of moronic people and I'm sure you do too. So saying that American should limit tanning beds and their usage is a bad idea.

I agree with with you that tanning outside and in a tanning bed are bad for you. It is possible to enjoy being in the sun as long as we use sunscreen, reapply it often and stay out of the sun in peak hours. There are benefits of the sun like Vitamin D. As long as we are careful in the sun we can still enjoy it!

Honestly, after reading this, I'm pretty glad that I don't tan. I do get burnt, but I use SPF 100 and get only a slight red tint. After reading this article, what I found very interesting was when it said, "WHO (World Health Organization) International Agency for Research on Cancer classes tanning beds as carcinogenic to humans. Cigarettes, arsenic, plutonium and mustard gas have the same category." This really surprised me, because not only has it been put in the carcinogenic category, but also cigarettes, plutonium and mustard gas is right along with it. When I see that, I get really surprised. I would expect it to be under a cancerous category, but not one with plutonium and cigarettes in it. All of the other items they said were in the same category with it are extremely dangerous. Most people wouldn't even think that tanning beds are that dangerous, until they see they are categorized with things that can give you lung cancer. I found on www.epa.gov/rpdweb00/radionuclides/plutonium.html#inbody it says about plutonium, "It generally stays in the body for decades, exposing organs and tissues to radiation, and increasing the risk of cancer." This can be very dangerous, and it shows that if tanning beds are alike in health results, people should stop using them.

whencupcakesattack said...

@ Imagine11
I agree with you. If people know they are going to harm their bodies, like being prone to cancer, why should they still go to tanning beds? Instead, I agree with the fact that it's much better to go outside in the summer and play. If you directly lay in the sun, you can get either a nice tan, or sunburn, making you prone to cancer. If you are running around, you will have a lesser chance of being affected too much that just laying in one spot soaking up the sun. I think that to help people's health, they should not go to tanning beds and they shouldn't lay in the sun, but they should be up and moving to help get a better or safer tan.

Matt w said...

As a kid, having a tan is an awesome thing, and people wil go long lengths to get them. But people should never tab in tanning beds. Everyone knows that tanning beds are terrible for you, but why people still do it? I have no idea. It could seriously injure you for life by giving you skin cancer

I don't think tanning is nessecary because it can hurt you in the long run. I don't tan a lot. sometimes i get a little tan in my arms, legs, and face but that is natural. There are a lot of girls in our school that try to tan them selves a lot. This just makes them look a weird and can harm them. Tanning causes skin cancer witch is not good and you can actually die from it. Tins is why I think tanning is not nessecary.

Sarah G. said...

I think that that article was kind of scary to think about especially with the history of melanoma in out family. Also I think that it was scary because my sister uses tanning beds for a couple of weeks before prom which is not a lot but it is still scary to think that she is now more likely to get it. The worst part about it is that my papa died from mellenoma so to think that Caroline is more likely to get it scares me a little bit.

Evan F said...

@ emerson I think tha you are right I think there should be warning labels on tanning machines and in tanning salons. Cigarettes and alcohol come with warning labels, and people think fast food should, too. This will help prevent over exposure, this is why I agree with you.

Sarah G. said...

@Evan Fahr
I agree with you when you say that it is unnecessary because it will hurt you in the long run. Also I think that you have to understand why people do it for a short period of time, like my sister when she does it for her prom, she is not thinking about 20 or 49 years from now whine she if she might get cancer she is trying to make sure that she looks as good if not better than everyone in that room for prom. So I think that it is uneccessary but understandable.

Kids in america tan way too much. They do trap themselves in the tomblike tanning beds. Tanning is actually bad for you, it can give you skin cancer. And skin cancer can kill you. Teens are not smart for tanning until they get skin cancer. Even when they know they have skin cancer, they keep tanning. People tan way to often. It should stop too. Once you get the perfect tan you should stop then. That is why people in america tan way too much.

I agree with you. This is because I do what you do. When I am outside in the sun, I am doing something like swimming or playing tennis, but then again, I am only out there for like two hours or so. But when people tan they sit in the sun for about three to four hours. Also getting skin cancer is really scary. It could be the end of your life. I dont know why people choose to burn their skin. That is why I agree with you chocolate.

I found this article interesting because of the statistics it provides. For example,"sixty thousand people are diagnosed with melanoma each year in the USA - one American dies every hour from the disease." This is scary to know that the sun causes melanoma and hour, an American dies from this disease. That is 24 deaths in one day! This is incredible, only because people have the ability to prevent the disease by either wearing sunscreen with a very high SPF, or not going into tanning beds. The choice is theirs, yet they still choose to have the "perfect" tan that is popular in todays society. The statistics in this article were very surprising, and that made the article interesting.

CandyS. said...

I find it ironic that everywhere around the world people are trying to change their skin tone. In America, people are risking their lives to become tan, while in India, people who's shade of skin color may be envious in America, are trying to lighten their skin tone to match european skin tones. They might not go as far as people do here in America, but they do put many skin lightening chemicals and powders on their skin. Many of these chemicals are not probably not good for their body. A question that comes to my mind is, why are people always striving to change themselves. Americans and Indians are basically doing opposite things to their skin to become "socially accepted" or to have the perfect tan. Therefore, I find it ironic that people all around the world feel a need to change themselves in order to look "perfect".

CandyS. said...

There are many others ways to tan, other than leaving yourself so exposed to the suns rays. First off, you could just put on sunscreen and try to get a natural tan by being outside. However, this doesn't mean, put on sunscreen then lay down in the sun. This means, putting on sunscreen as a layer of protection and just enjoying the outdoors and getting a natural tan that way. Another less harmful way to get the perfect than is by using a spray tan. It could be a hard thing to do, getting a great spray tan with our streaks or turing orange, but it is a better option than exposing oneself to the suns rays. Therefore, since there is the option of getting a natural tan, or getting a spray tan, there are more than one way to become tan without getting exposed to the suns rays.

CandyS. said...

I think that it is interesting that the latest fashion in America is to have tan skin. I read all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, and I remember that it was unladylike for a girl to have tan skin ( or skin as red as an indian). It was proper for them to have pale skin because it shows that they like to do ladylike things such as take of the house inside and do things such as they daily baking sewing and washing. These jobs did not require going outside where there is a chance to get tan. The jobs outside where the suns rays were, were reserved for men. At that point in time it was not socially accepted for a lady to be tan and to do "a man's work". However nowadays, it is unusual to be pale in the summer, and its "cool" to be tan. Therefore I found it interesting that the latest "fad" if you would call it that, is to get a perfect tan.

disneydancer12 said...

@Candy S i agree that there are better ways to get a tan. i think that people should just get natural tans and not use tanning beds at all. if people dont use tanning beds, there is a reduced chance in getting skin cancer.

Kevin 0 said...

@Candy S I also agree with you. It is very bad for your skin to use a tanning bed rather than ju7st tanning outside when you don't have anything else to do. I see many people at the beach just there to tan. This can decrease your chance of getting sun cancer. I have never have or want to use a tanning bed. It might get you tan aster, but you can get very sick. Spray on tans are like spraying orange pant on you and saying it’s a tan... again I never will or ever have done a spray on tan. This is why I think that you should rather sit in the sun for a couples of hours a day, rather than sitting in a tanning bed, which can cause skin cancer, or spray on tans.

Ryan you made a good point about what you were talking about.

I think that tanning outside is okay in moderation, but in a tanning bed it's not only bad for you but it can make you look really strange. It can cause serious damage to your body and your health. I say that tanning in a tanning bed is bad because it can harm your body and look really strange.
