Conflict in Found

The basic premise for Found by Margaret Haddix is that society has found a way to save poor children from the past and bring them to the future to be adopted. The company that does this soon gets greedy and starts to steal children from the past and sell them in the future...a kind of time-travel kidnap and slavery idea. Jonah is one of those stolen children. However circumstances allow him the opportunity to return to his home. After living in the 21st century for 13 years, can he go back to life in the past, poor but with his real family? What would you do?

Just like the past post, this one is too explicit to create interesting debate. We need to make INFERENTIAL statements about THEME and CONNECTION. A better concept would be..."Is anything worth leaving your family for? Or, what is more important Progress or Family?" These are big choices and big decisions. Think about it...put yourself even just 70 years in the past. If you lived then there would be no cures or treatments for common ailments, the world would be on the brink of war, lifespans were much shorter. Would you trade everything you have today due to progress to go back to that time if it meant you would be with your family? Think about it - H

I would go back to my family because they would always care for me if I get sick. I would rather die with my family happy then without my family and alone. Also I can bring back medicine for my family and ideas.

I agree with Joey M. I can always rely on my family to be there for me, and I would rather die with them, then alone. Also, bringing back new medicine can help people suffering from illness, and people with just a simple cold. My family could help me adapt to a much more difficult life, and i would be much happier there.

Woahhh that would be absolutly crazy, i honesly dont think i would be able to go back to my old life leaving behind all of that great technolgy, such as phones and computers, i would most likely stay in this world i would miss my family alot , but i would visit, that would be a hard discion and im not honestly sure, thats a tough question to ask.

I think that in this case, it would really depend on how my life was in the time i was in. If i had been adopted by a family that loved me and i had become close to and grown up with, then that would be more important than my actual family in the past. I would hate to go back and leave all that i loved and all thhat i knew...but if i didnt have a family or things that i cared about, i would probably be willing to go back to how my life should have been with my actual family...so baically i think that family -family meaning not explicitly biological family but whatever family i felt close to- is the most important thing.

i agree with af 313 i mean sure the family in the past is your real family but would u want to go back if u already had a good life in the future, also if i went back i could catch some disese that they had back then that my body wasnt used to and die

I would want to stay here. I would visit as much as I could/needed, because of my situation now. I have Scoliosis, and living like this would be hard in the past. I would be contorted, and I would be bedridden, and in constant pain. Imagine your spine being twisted, and bent. That is what I would be like without this modern technology, and doctors. I would hate do die in bed, rather than enjoying life longer than I would have in the past with supportive friends.

i would probably go back to be with my family once again after not being with them for 13 years. although i might want to stay in the 21st century i think my best choice would be to go back to the past and finally see my family.

*Jess* said...

I agree with *annie*. I wouldn't really want to leave this time now with all this new technology...and it's unfortunate that they didn't have many things that we ahve today. It would be a very hard decison that I would have to think about...I would probably go back and visit though.

I agree with Jewles. I would rather go back to stay with my family in the past then stay in the future. I would know the consequences like no technology or the things that make the 21st century eaisier but I would most definatley trade it all to be with my family again.Like alot of people said, I could also bring some medicine and some things that would make life in the past simpler. It is a crazy situation but my family would help me go throught it and I bet no one in the future would care for me as much as they would. :) :( :0

I agree with Jewlz, I would do anything for my family. Sometimes I really do not like being around them but they are always there for me no matter what. Like Jewlz, I would bring medications and other life saving materials back to the past with me. Saving all those lives from diease and war would be amazing! This would be a hard thing to decide, but my family would help me and would have trust in me that i would make the right choice. <3

it depends on how life was in the past. if it wasnt really worth it then i wouldnt go. Also was Jonah brought to the future as a infant or child?
i wouldnt go because if my family doesnt know who i am im stuck in the past with no family regretting the decision.

Tommy and Claire both make really good points. Depending on how old I was when they took me would make a big difference. Like Tommy said, if my family doesn't remember me, then going back to them would be stupid. On the other hand, like Claire and Jewlz said, I'd do anything for my family. My choice would probably be to go back to my family, but without any medications or ideas from the future. I wouldn't bring anything back because I'd want to live my life as if i never went to the future. And I'd hope that my family would be supportive of my coming back.

i would go back to my family. he could adapt to his new envirnment. and he gets to see his family after 13 yrs. his family probably wants to see him too.

tkuch said...

i would go back to my family without a doubt cause they would do the same for me. I would wanna see my family after 13 years, wouldnt you?

Wow, thats really...depressing. I would stay in the future. It really would be nice to be back with my family, but I wouldn't be able to leave all the common discoveries in the new world. If I understood that staying in the future was better for my survival, then yes, I would definitely stay. I'm being brutally honest.

If I could go back with my family after living in the 21st century for 13 years I would stay with my family. I would also show my family all the wonderful ideas in the future.

The biggest factor in this decision is what the future is like. If it is the same except with slighly more advanced technology (excluding time travel) then I would most likely return. If the future was some utopian wonderland, then yeah, of course I'd stay. I guess I don't know how both sets of parents are treating him in the different times. I also am not sure how it coutns as slavery if they are being adopted unless "adopted" means "bought". There isn't enough info about the situation.

i think that i would stay in the future. this isbecause i would no longer be poor, i could get cured from allmost any illness, and at one point i could proboably bring the rest of my family into the future

I would have to go back and stay with my family. Not to sound sappy, but the bond of a family is unbreakable. If I died with my family, it would be better than living without them because I have close relationships with my family. Also, it'd kind of be a mean thing to do, just leave your family behind in a time without particularly great technology and medicinal knowledge.

I would definitely go back to my family. Progress means nothing if you have no one to share it with. If you have things to enjoy, they will make you happy for a very short period of time, until you begin to get lonely. Then, you will yearn for someone to be happy with. It depends, it would matter why my life was bad, if it was because my parents were abusing me then i would stay in the future, but if they were hard-working people that did everything that they could to help the family then i would go back to them.

fitz12 said...

I would go back to see my family but it says it could bring people back to the future and thats how they steal people, so i would go back and ask my family if they want to see the future. If they dont i would just stay and forget about all the things in the future and have fun with my family. if they did i would bring my family to the future and and my parents could find a job and buy a house and things would go back to normal just with newer technoligy

JMAC-Per-8 said...

I would go back in the past to see my family. I would do this because i wouldn't want to be sold to a family i don't know. I would also do the same thing as Fitz12 which is bring my family to the future so i could life with them. The problem is that I might get famillery to my new home and century, I would also have to get a new warbrobe, a new car and new friends. I would be richer because if my family leaves there bank account with the mooney in it it will increase of the time we had traveled

i would definitly go back. Especialy if i was some kind of slave. i d want to be with my real family, even if i leave a high tech futuristic place. Plus, i could of course, bring back medicines and info from the future that would help me and my family survive.

LittleMissSunshinex22 said...

I would go back with my family. I would never survive as a slave, let alone in a world with strangers. Although living the good life is always nice, its always key to have some form of family there with you to support care and love for you. When i travled back to live with my family again, i wouldbring medicines and other necessaties from the future.

I would go back to my family. My family would be there for me no matter. Theyd take care of me if i was sick or hurt. Theyd always would ssuppport me. It would be nice to have materials and the good life but knowone would be there for me. But for me family is the most important

i agree with LittleMissSunshinex22 i would go back with my family beacuse i would defnaly not make it as a slave. And if i could find money and medicines to bring back to my family that would be even better.

I would go back with my family. Even though i have lived in the 21st century for 13 years, i would miss my family alot. i would be lonely without anyone i am related to.

Kathleen said...

i agree with MarissaD. i agree because i would miss my family very much and i would not be able to be away from them for 13 years. it would be too hard for me. even if i was poor before i would still want to be with them.

I agree with Joey M because even though I wouldn't have any of the advances I would be much happier knowing that I'm with my family then being alone in the future. Even though life expectency is much shorter I would bring along new medacations and take any docter who would be willing to come. Being poor would not matter because I would bring money from the future to the past because money was more valued back then.

Kayla =) said...

I also agree with Joey M because I rather give up everything in the future and go back to the past to be with my family. No matter what I would want to be with my family.

C.J.Massar said...

I wouldn't stay in the future I do realize the fact that they are my parents and It was thirteen years ago but they are my parents No matter what. I would find some lottery number that won and bring it back in time with me and I wouldn't be poor. in fact money would be of the utmost unimportance. If i was stolen then of course I would go

Colin said...

Before, I said that it would make a difference about what the future is like, the money, the technolagy, and the better medical benifits, but nowe, i think that either way, i would go back to stay with my family, the money wouldn't really mater, though IO may be rich in the future, nothing beats spending time with your family.

cstrachan said...

I agree with marissaD because i would also miss my family too much and I belive that family comes before anything in life

LeBron said...

I would go back to my family. I would do this because I would miss them too much and I rather be with them than alone. Being home could also help you because you can take the ideas from the past and use them to make lots of money. You wouldn't be poor anymore and you would be with your family

I would go back to my life with my real famil. Even though i have lived in the 21st centry for 13 years i would miss my family. I could rely on my family wen i am sick or when i need something done. My family would always be there for me. I would rather die with my family poorly, rather than die rich with a random family. I agree with Joey M. and Jewlz.

It certainly is encouraging to see how important family is to you guys. I agree, regardless of circumstance there is something to be said for being surrounded by people who know and care for you. The question I would ask though is...what is family? Can't the "future" families be just as loving and supportive? Is biological relationship the only thing that makes someone family? Are there other factors?

Ian said...

yes i would want to go back because it is really more important to be with your family then to be rich and prosperous,
