Stay Healthy

Winter is the time of year that many people fall victim to a cold or the dreaded "stomach bug".  This article has some tips on beating the winter sicknesses.  Do you currently do any of them?  Do you know any others?

I honestly don't really do any of these things on a regular basis, but I'd definitely love to start. The article talks about getting a good amount of sleep, but quite frankly I love staying up late and it's a super bad habit of mine to stay awake for a long time. Also when it talks about drinking milk, I can't hand milk at all. I'll eat yogurt one in a while but that's it. Although I don't do these tips to stay healthy during this season, I think it is a good starting pint to stay cold-free this winter.

I don't do any of these things currently on a regular basis.But he only thing I do is sleep for 7 to 9 hours but like I said not regularly basis. I hate milk so I don't drink it. These are things that I would want to do so I don't get sick this winter. A connection I have with being sick during winter is my stepdad usally gets the flu each winter so I will defitnly so him these tips.

Sorry about that :(

@AVgleek17 I agree with you that its good to start a cold free winter. I also don't do any of these five tips on a regular basis. WIth the sleep issue I usally go to bed at 10 or later then I wake up at 5:30am. SO I want some more sleep.

abc123comewithme said...

I know my family and I sleep more during the winter because of the longer days. I know we sleep longer because i go to sleep at 9:30 and wake up at 6 in the spring and fall. but in the winter (break days) i've slept until about 8! this proves that i sleep longer because if you do the math, if I sleep until 8 in the winter, then that is 2 more hours then if it were fall or spring.

I always do this on a regular basis. Most people don't do any of these things but I always do them. They keep me from getting sick outside but I'm sick now because my cousin came down and all he eats is chips and soda. I ate some of these things and I became sick. I don't know any other ones but I do know that these tips will work. Well they worked for me.

I do most of these things on a regular basis. I like to get extra sleep (over winter break), I love to eat fruit in the morning and always veggies at night and if it's snowy or not I love to get outside and sled or tumble down my hill and jump around. I think everyone should do these and not spread the stomach bug around the school.

obviously you should was your hands after touching things. also cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough. personally i like to eat warm meals and wear layers when going outside. for girls i blow-dry my hair.

I currently do alot of these things. Like the article recommends, I always have a hearty breakfast, drink lots of milk, and I am a big fan of fruits and vegetables. Therefore, I regularly employ ways to beat winter sickness.
I do know of one other way to help keep healthy during the winter. You should routinely exercise during the winter months to help keep you body fit and well exercised. If you keep yourself in good shape, you will less likely become ill, and you won't be as rusty when you enter the sports season. Therefore, this would be another good peice of advice on beating the winter bug.

I honestly do only two of these things. I only eat more veggies and fruits, and also I have a habit of drinking milk all the time to begin with, so in the winter I tend to drink even more. I usually don't do the others, especially the sleep one. I LOVE to stay up all night (I know, bad habit) but I just love to stay up late and watch shows and play video games. I usually fall asleep around 2:30 AM or so... and I need to wake up around 6 on school days. I know, I stay up later on weekends. Bad I know. I don't do any other things either, except take more vitamins in the winter because I always get sick. Other than that I don't think I do anything else in the winter to help.

Anonymous said...

i agree with u don't know me because you need to have a good source of fruits and vegetables. breakfast is also important so that good as well. having a strong amuin system is very important because that is what helps you fight germs and bacteria.

@Kayleigh
I agree with you. Haha, I don't do these things either. Except for the milk part. I like your idea for sharing the tips to others. My sister always gets sick in the winter time, and she is sick right now too. I think I'll share these with her.

YOU SHOULD ALSO WEAR LOTS OF CLOTHS JUST LIKE I WEAR TONS OF JACKETS EACH DAY!!!!

I do exercise daily because mostly everyday I have basketball practice and if I do not have practice then i am outside shooting hoops and running around. I even run around my lake if there is nothing else to do. I think that the 5 ways to staying healthy are very helpful because now I know that in order not to get sick I have to....exercise, drink milk, eat a good breakfast, get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep, and eat more fruits and vegetables. In the article, it said that if I do all of the % steps then I will not get sick and be healthy in the winter. I will do all of these steps in order to stay healthy because I HATE being sick.

Logan S. said...

I agree with you u don't know me because I too do most of these things also. I do all I can to try to beat being sick in the winter. I hate being sick. Especially the stomach bug.....YUKKKK. I will try my hardest to be the healthiest person alive.

I think that all of the things the article said, were very basic things that they tell you to do all year. What does it matter if it's winter or not? In the spring, summer, and fall they say get enough sleep and eat healthy. Most people (according to other comments) don't seem to do those things. I think we should have winter's off instead of summers. In the winter all I want to do is sleep and I hate snow and I don't ever want to think about anything else but sleeping and maybe some hot chocolate. So, I think the article is just lame and I don't know any other ways that why we should all move some where warmer so we don't have to read lame articles telling us lame advice.

Man on the Moon said...

These basic things I do a lot because I want to stay healthy. I love milk so I drink lots of milk, I love fruit so I eat fruit after dinner. But in the winter I have school and have to eat a quick breakfast of mini wheats or cheerios.Also since I get home late from swim practice I don't sleep well or have fun with family with my academically packed weekends and swim meets which can go on for days and up to 9 hours a day. So therefore I do some of these things because I want to stay healthy and I like staying healthy so sometimes it easy and sometimes it isn't.

Man on the Moon said...

Sweet I agree with you that everyone should do this because like you many others want to stay healthy. Staying healthy doesn't just involve you but others to around you and that they don't get the stomach bug too.So if you stay healthy there is a probable chance others will to.

Anonymous said...

I think these things are important in staying healthy even though I dont do many of them, except sleep and eat fruit. I think I sleep more in the winter because it gets darker outside faster so there really isn't much to do. I also think I eat a lot of fruit so that can help me. I dont drink milk because I think it is descusting so I never drink it. Also it is hard for me to spend time with my family because we are never really together because we all have different things going on. I really dont have breakfast in the morning because I never have time. I would say dress approprietly for the weather so you are comfertable and not freezing or really hot.

Anonymous said...

I agree with anonymous because most of these things they tell you to in pretty much all the seasons and year round. You are always suppposed to have breakfast, always supposed to drink milk, always supposed to drink fruits nd vegetables, spend time with your family and sleep well. These things are not just specific for winter but they are supposed to be done yeaer round.

AVgleek17 said...

@ u don't now me,
Unlike you, I don't do a lot of these things, but I agree with you when you talked about the other ways to stay healthy this winter. I know for a fact exercising is a key component in staying healthy at any time, but since sports aren't occurring, it's sometime hard to stay active and you need to stay active. Because of the pint you brought up in other ways to stay healthy, I think you are very right when you talk about exercising during the winter to keep away that evil little bug.

u don't know me said...

@Anonymous
I agree with what you said in your response is important to staying healthy in the winter. For example, you said that that people should cover their mouth when they sneeze. Also, you said to dress in layers when going out side. Therefore, becuase these steps make you less likely to get sick, I will have to agree with you that these steps do help you stay healthy during the winter.

@ kaylegh f.
does your step dad use any of these methods? if not he should try one because my family rarely gets sick in the winter and we use only 1 or 2. this proves that you should use this because if my family doesn't usually get sick in the winter and we use 2 of these then your step dad will most likely benefit from one of these tips. how ever it could just be that we are lucky ;D

I currently always have a hearty breakfast and drink milk everyday. Doing this is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy all the time. Milk has protein and a hearty breakfast helps you start the day strong.

Brian C said...

@ Kayleigh
You know that its never too soon to try something new like having milk and sleeping more.

Nosferactu said...

I love doing these things. Every night I work out for about 30 min. I always eat a good breakfast and a great dinner. I love playing outside and playing in the snow. I hate being sick because all I do when I am sick is sit on the couch and drink soup instead of playing outside. I have no other tips for a way to stay healthy except for eating healthy and lots of exercise.

You could avoid the water and stay warm. You could avoid the cold but that would be inactive. You could also drink plenty. These are some other ways to stay healthy suring the season

I currently do some of the tips that are listed in this article because I sleep more and drink milk but I do not change my habits. In the winter I go to sleep at the same time as in other months but in winter time I get much better sleep because it is cold outside. During the winter I drink at least one cup of mmilk a day on weekdays because with all of my school lunches I take a strawberry milk. This milk is low-fat and all the milk I drink at home is 1%. Also, during Holiday Break I ate breakfast which is something I do not do on week days

edemace said...

@BrianC
I agree with you because i also eat a full breakfast and everything. Eating healthy and staying active is always a good way to stay healthy.

I agree with you that these are obvious things to do all year not just winter because all of these tips are regular habits. For example people like Mr. B say that we always need to get 8 hours of sleep which was in fall. Another thing that people always tell me to do is to eat a hearty breakfast. My mom always lectures me saying that I should drink lots of milk so I can have strong bones and grow tall and that I should eat more fruit and vegetables. Also, my father and brother tell me that I need to exercise more. All of these tips are things that people have already told me and they never mentioned Winter specifically. Therefore, I agree with you that these tips are basic things we are told all year to do like eating fruits and vegetables, sleeping, and drinking milk which I am told to do every week.

Everyday i get as much sleep as possible and always eat a breakfast because then i won't be as hungry when I eat lunch at school. I either eat a Peanut Butter or Nutella covered waffle. But sometimes, I eat Dunkin Donuts and eat a Ham and cheese flatbread. This usually fills me up enough to last me until about lunch time when I usually get hungry again.

Anonymous said...

@singdancelive
I always make sure I eat in the morning so that I wouldn't be in your position and be eating only a bagel at lunch because that's when I get really hungry. Everyday I try to eat a lot at lunch so that I don't LOSE weight, I GAIN weight like we're supposed to. So you should have time to eat a breakfast to help bring you to a bagel-free filling lunch!

Before I read this article I heard of the majority of these health tips. One in particular is to eat fruit and vegetables. By improving your diet you can become healthier. According to the article it states, "it's important to ensure that you still keep your diet healthy and include five portions of fruit and veg a day." This quote shows that according to the reliable source you can improve your diet by eating those things.

Sarah G. said...

I only do one of those things on the list and that is to drink more milk. i do this because athttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22349307/ns/health-diet_and_nutrition/t/does-milk-really-do-body-good/#.TwYq92B7S9I it says that "i've found that most people thrive on milk, whether their goal is to lose fat or build muscle." I also drink a lots of milk during the winter because http://www.livestrong.com/article/395598-can-milk-or-exercise-help-prevent-colds/ says thatclinical evidence supports milk as a cold-prevention remedy. this is why i drink milk during the winter. it keeps me healthy and safe so i can be at the top of my game all the time.

chocoholicdancer13 said...

I actually do most of these on a regular basis. Like it recommended in the article, I drink a lot of milk, eat a serving or two of veggies or fruits a day, sleep for at least 7 hours a day and have a good, healthy breakfast each morning. Although I do not do activities with my family, I do dance for about 8-9 hours a week. So, you can see that I do get the required amount of these things but, I would like to do some of these better this year.

Anna F said...

I do currently take place in most of these tips because I eat a healthy breakfast, get active, get my sleep, eat healthy, and drink more milk. Every morning I have cereal with a fruit. For dinner, we always have a vegetable, but I also eat fruits and vegies whenever I want to. I get about 7 hours of sleep and I dance 18 hours each week.I also have started drinking more milk to get my bones stronger. All of these things keep me healthy and away from any disease or sickness. So as you can see, I do take plce with many of these.

Anna F said...

@Kayleigh
I think you should start to get into a habit of doing these to stay healthy and away from the doctor. Not only should you do it during the winter, you should do it on a daily basis. Not only tell you stepdad about thees tips but also aplly them to yourself.

Grace S. said...

Personally, I currently follow most of these tips on a daily basis. For example, I get at least 7 hours of sleep on school nights, and even more on weekends because I usually don't have to wake up early then. I drink milk just about every day and eat a good amount of fruits and vegetables. Also, I dance almost every day of the week so I stay fit and healthy. The only tip that I need to start doing more would be "Eating A Hearty Breakfast". I usually just don't have enough time to eat a big breakfast because I'm always rushing to get to school during weekdays. I could probably try saving a little bit of time to eat something healthy each morning.

Peter P said...

I do all of these on a regular basis because I get lots of sleep, drink a lot of milk, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise, and have a good breakfast. I sleep for about 8 to 9 hours every night, I drink milk with breakfast and dinner, I eat fruits with breakfast, lunch, and dessert. I exercise on a daily basis either playing soccer or running around outside. I also eat cereal or waffles for breakfast every morning. That's why I don't get sick very much in the winter.

Peter P said...

@Brian C
I agree with you because of your reasons. For example, drinking milk is the easiest way to keep yourself from getting sick in the winter. So is eating a hearty breakfast. If you have enough time to eat a good breakfast, then you will be fine during the whole winter. That's why it is easy to stay healthy in the winter.

Grace S. said...

@Anna F.,
Basically what you about how you follow these tips in your life is similar to how I apply them in mine. For instance, we both dance, eat healthy, get lots of sleep, etc. However, you said that you always eat a healthy breakfast, while I said that I usually don't because of lack of time. Also, I drink milk everyday, and you said you don't but you want to start. Therefore, I think you should definitely start drinking more milk on a daily basis to get your bones to become stronger.

I do know someone who has tricks for beating sicknesses. The Person I know is SHorvath. He helps prevent our classes from getting sick because he keeps the windows open the whole year. This prevents us from getting sick because people get sick in the winter from enclosed areas and circulating germs, and keeping the windows open circulates fresh air into the classroom.

The1 said...

@;D Your post lacks specific evidence. I know this because you said that people should wear lots of clothes, and nothing else. Not having evidence is a bad thing because, it will not persuade readers to beleive your cause/statement. If you filled your blog comment with evidence such as "20,000 children get pneumonia each year. you could prevent this by wearing coats"

Emerson34 said...

I should be safe from the stomach bug. This is because I do everything on that list except for sometimes eat a good breakfast, because sometimes in the morning I am rushed. However, I drink a lot of milk, I eat lots of fruit and many vegetables, I usually sleep for about 8 hours every night, and I exercise a lot. I have basketball practice, but if I don't, I'm outside for at least an hour a day, usually around two, either shooting around, running up and down my street, or hanging out with friends. Therefore, since I do all of the healthy things, I should be healthy this winter.

chocoholicdancer13 said...

@Anonymous, I agree with you that you should eat the certain amount of fruits and vegetables a day, as well as a heart-healthy breakfast. They all do increase your healthiness and I think it is important to improve your health and diet. You can then see that having the appropriate factors in your diet can then improve your diet.

Emerson34 said...

@The1 I agree with you that Mr. Horvath does keep us healthier. He keeps the windows open year round, even during the winter. As much as I hate this because it is very cold in his class and sometimes in the winter I wear shorts and t-shirts, it keeps us healthier. This is because it helps us breathe clean air throughout the winter. Therefore, Mr. Horvath's idea of opening windows keeps us healthier.

if i want to gain weight i have to try harder then someone trying to loose weight so its not a problem for me.

Lauren said...

I do exercise everyday because I'm on two basketball teams. If I don't have practice then I either practicing at home or with a neighbor. Also I mostly eat fruits and veggies at every meal. Even though I dislike drinking milk, so I eat yogurt everyday for lunch and get a god nights sleep. Doing all of this has kept me healthy and I plan to stay that way!

Lauren said...

@ Anonymous I agree with you because a easy way to spread germs is by not covering your mouth. Also if you were to sneeze into your hand them the germs are on it and if you were to touch a pencil, then the next person to touch that is likely to get sick! I also dry my hair after washing it so that I don't go to bed or go outside with a wet head. Therefore, since I do wash my hands, blow dry my hair, and cover my mouth when I sneeze; I've stayed healthy.

cheerextremelover11 said...

Yes I do follow all of these steps. I do not follow all of these steps because I know it will help me I do because I just do in general and I am a healthy person. plus I know one trick is to just stay inside because it is too cold outside. that is a common sence one.

I could drink more milk. I do sleep 7-9 hours a night and I eat a lot of vegetables, though. I also excercise a lot because of sports and I eat a good breakfast everyday. I still seem to get sick a lot this time of the year, though. One thing I would add is to not wear shorts and a t-shirt because a lot of kids don't seem to get that and end up sick.

Ali M. said...

Well year round I actually use all of these tips. No matter the day if I do not have anymore homework, I try to get to bed around 9:00. If during the week I only got about 6 hours of sleep per night,(What happened this week), I try to catch up on my sleep on the weekends. I always drink milk with my breakfast and dinner every morning and night. I really enjoy drinking milk and I think it tastes good! My favorite food is fruit, so eating five fruits and vegetables a day is easy for me. My family is a very outdoorsy family, even during the winter. For example, on New Years Day we woke up and took a hike to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise! It was very pretty and we also got exercise! I also always eat a giant breakfast, or else I won't make it through the day to our 1:30 lunch time. All of these things are pretty normal for me to be doing, and as you can see they are not that difficult for me to complete!

Ali M. said...

I agree with you G-Man because I think that I already do all of these things all year round. I find that in the summer I get just as good of a night's sleep. I always drink the same amount of milk all year round and I always love fruits and vegetables no matter the season. In the summer we always take hikes and get outside as much as possible. For example at least twice a summer we take a 3 to 4 day backpacking trip through New England. Even during the summer I eat a giant breakfast because I have gymnastics every day and it is the only way for me to make it throughout the 4 hour practice. These tips are important in winter, but I always do them year round, and seem to be pretty healthy.

MRAjGE said...

I (and I think many other kids/teens) do most of these things always, not just during winter because these things are good for you year round. I usually get at least seven hours of sleep per night which is the suggested amount. I think some teens get a least that because they stay up until about 12 and sleep in until nine or later. I also think most kids eat some fruits and veggies(on their own or if their parents make them). I usually eat at least one kind of fruit or vegetables at each meal. I also think that most kids/teens play a sport, play outside, or exercise in some way. Since most kids already participate in two or more of these suggested activities, then they should stay healthy in not only the winter, but the whole year as well.

LittleMonster1028 said...

During the Winter, I eliminate my sleep debt and participate in more family activities to stay healthy. Every school night I go to bed at 7:30 and wake up around 6:30 so I get more than enough sleep. Also, in the Winter my aunts, uncles, and cousins frequently come over my house. Sometimes we go bowling or play Apples-To-Apples, but other times (more around Christmas) we go to concerts and go shopping together. I don't drink milk more in the Winter because it is just plain disgusting and I don't eat more fruit because the only fruits I like are pineapples, apples, and kiwis and they are not fresh this time of year. Lastly I don't eat a healthy breakfast because I just don't like breakfast foods. This is how I do and don't stay healthy during the Winter season.

LittleMonster1028 said...

@abc123comewithme
I disagree with you. This is because unlike you, I get less sleep over winter break than in the spring or fall. This is because every night this winter break I was either at my friend's house until midnight or later or watching The Office and Pretty Little Liars with both my brothers and Grammy until midnight or later every night. In the morning I would wake up around 9:00 because I hate waking up and having more than half the day be gone. Over winter break I only got roughly 9 hours of sleep a night unlike my usual 11 hours. This is why I disagree with you.

I do use some of these tips because they do keep me from getting sick. I exercise every day because i have basketball after school and soccer at least once a week. In addition, I love fruit so I eat it every day and eat vegetables at dinner. Moreover, I eat breakfast before school because my mom also says it can keep me from getting sick but it may not be a big breakfast because I’m never hungry that early in the morning. However, sometimes it is hard to follow these tips. For example, we get a lot of homework this year so it is hard to get a 7-9 hour sleep. Also, I am lactose intolerant so I can’t drink milk or cheese or yogurt as recommended in the article. Another tip I try in place of milk is drinking juice because that is a good source of calcium too.

Anonymous said...

I agree with @Ali M. because I also try to follow all of these tips and they are pretty normal for me too. I have the same problem with sleep. Due to all of the work we receive, I don’t get a lot of sleep either. I do the same thing as you and catch up on sleep on the weekends. I also love fruits and vegetables so I don’t have a problem with eating them every day either. You also said that your family is active, and so is mine. I play multiple sports and so does my brother. For all my older siblings and parents, they go for runs and go to exercise classes and the gym. Moreover, we have a small exercise station in our basement where my dad and brothers work out. Lastly, I love eating breakfast in the morning too especially since we have a late lunch; and as long as I’m hungry in the morning. Therefore, I agree with you and can complete these tasks without a problem except for drinking milk.

Unknown said...

I do some of these things even though I didn't know these were ways to stay healthy. I use the winter break to get more sleep and to make up the hours I didn't have enough sleep. I also drink milk each day but don't drink more specifically in the winter. These are the things that I do to stay healthy in the winter.

Unknown said...

@AVgleek17
I agree with you that is a good starting point to stay healthy this winter. I say this because I hate getting a cold. I especially dislike the medicine because they taste horrible. Even though I do some of the things the article suggests like sleeping more and drinking milk, I still got a cold this winter. So I guess that only doing that isn't enough. That's why I agree that more people should start doing more of these things to stop getting colds during winter.

Getting sick is a horrible thing, but there are many ways to prevent it and I hope to do those things so I can stay healthy this season. I exercise a lot by playing sports, playing outside, and running on the treadmill. Also, I eat fruits and veggies a lot. Milk is something that I have to drink everyday because of my parents. If I stay on these things, I will be happy and healthy!!

bieberlover10 said...

I think you have a very healthy lifestyle. This is because you eat healthy, exercise, and get a good nights sleep. That is why I think you have a great healthy lifestyle and you should keep on with it year-round!

Kibble said...

I have used some of these techniques to fight off a winter bug, and currently do now as well. But I also know of some other afective, and simple things to do to prevent getting sick in winter. These would include taking vitemins everyday, avoiding sick people, and Mr. Horvath's famous method of keeping the windows open all year long. By taking vitemins, every day people help get their body chemistry at its peak, and become stronger, against germs, and viruses. Then by avoiding sick people is just a no brainer, so when I see a sick person I will try my best to stay away from them more than I normally would, just as others do. As for keeping windows open all year, it helps keep air circulating, and normally people keep their windows closed in winter, because its cold, and get sick from the air. So although all of these tips are extremely simple, they are also extremely afective.

Alex Z. said...

I don't really follow the tips that the article discusses such as sleep 7-9 hours a night, drink milk, have a good breakfast, or do activities with my family. Most nights, I stay up late doing homework, and I barely have time to get ready in the morning so breakfast is totally out of the picture. I don't really drink much milk because I don't think it tastes good, and my family's always busy so I don't think they'd have time for activities. I think that trying these tips wouldn't hurt, but currently I do not really do any of them.

Kibble said...

@ LittleMonster 1028,
I think its great that you follow many of these tips. And I also agree with your thoughts on going to bed early, to get enough sleep. But I can also see how people can get sick in winter, from your exact ideas on fruit. I know alot of people, that don't eat alot of fruit in winter, because it might not be the best time that the fruit that they like will grow at its best. However I still think that people should find away to ignore, the fact that they may not like one fruit, and try another, different kinds of fruits have different vitamins, but all vitamins are good for us. Maybe we should all try new fruits this way we can have something to realy on to help keep us healthy year long.

I think it is important to stay healthy.So you do not get sick. I play on two basketball teams, drink milk at least one meal a day, and love fruits and vegetables. During the cold winter it is very important to take care of yourself to prevent getting sick.

"There are many ways to prevent getting sick." I agree with her because, if you take care of your body and stay healthy . You will not have to worry about getting. You may not like the way something tastes but it really helps.

@Kibble I have not used these techniques to fight off winter bugs. But I know the same other affective, things you can do to prevent getting sick in winter such as taking vitamins, avoiding contact with sick people, and I guess you could count keeping the windows open all year long like Mr. Horvath does. These simple things that you do daily can keep you healthy in the winter. They prevent you from getting winter bugs, but I do not use the techniques.

I agree with you that there are many ways to stay healthy. This article gave 5 and there are many more that they didnot mention.

I actually do all of these things to some extent. I try to go to go to bed from 10 to 10:30 very night after homework. I way up at about 6:20, so that is about 8 hours of sleep. I acctually do not prefer milk but I know that it is good fore me so i drink it about twice a day. I eat about 8 serving of fruit per day and 3 servings of vegetables. I snack on fruits instead of unhealthy things such as chips and crackers. I am very active and have at least one basketball practice per day and during other seasons I either run or work out. To me breakfast is the best meal. I eat muffins, fruit, waffles, eggs, bacon, or any other breakfasty food.

I actually have done some of the things on this list because some of them I actually have known before hand and others my mom have told me to do. For example, I naturally have already known and do drink a lot of milk because of the benefits to your skin and immune system. Another example is, my ,mom always tells me to get a lot of rest in the winter or your will get run down. Therefore, this list is not that shocking, since I already know to do all these things because they are more common sense types of facts to know and do.

Imagine11 said...

@Matt W.

I agree with your post because you also do all the facts on the list already. You said that, " I try to go to go to bed from 10 to 10:30 very night after homework. I way up at about 6:20, so that is about 8 hours of sleep. I acctually do not prefer milk but I know that it is good fore me so i drink it about twice a day." You also said that, "I eat about 8 serving of fruit per day and 3 servings of vegetables. I snack on fruits instead of unhealthy things such as chips and crackers. I am very active and have at least one basketball practice per day and during other seasons I either run or work out." Therefore, since I also have already known to do theses things, I can relate to your comment.

I think these tips make sense because eating healthy will definetly make you healthier and outdoor walking can decrease chances of hert disease and other stuff. So these tips are good and i will start to follow them.

This is a website that I might actually refer to this year. I think that all of these tips are helpful. I never knew that drinking milk could actually make you more resistant to getting sick. Of course, everybody knows about washing hand after coming in contact after touching you mouth, nose, or stuff like that. But I did not know that breakfast actually made you healthier and more prone to getting sick. This is why I think that this article is interesting.

StephanieZ said...

@Sweet,

I am glad that some people actually are turning a new leaf this year. I too are trying to eat more veggies and fruits, and trying to get more sleep. I think that more people should realize how this actually does help you stay away from cold germs and bacteria. This is why I think that that people should be more like us.

@nosferactu i agree with you that exercize is a very important thing to do during these cold winter days. I know this because at http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/exercise-healthy-heart it says that working out helps strengthen your cardioascular system. On http://stayhealthier.wordpress.com/2010/03/30/cardiovascular-system-understand-it-to-stay-healthy/ it says that a strong cardiovascular system helps to keep your body strong and healthy. Obviously, if working out gives you a strong cardio system and that keeps you healthy, then working out is good for you.

I agree with you. I think these tips on staying healthy are helpful for people. Breakfast makes you healthier and more prone to getting sick. So maybe people who don't eat breakfast will start eating something.

Pandanut12 said...

I have to do number two because my parents want us (my sister and I) to have a LOT of calcium in our bodies. I know this because they make us have milk at dinner, breakfast (sometimes), and lunch if we're home for it. Milk is the most commomly found source of calcium, so therefore my parents want us to be fully stocked in calcium. (Although I had no idea it helps with your immune system; you learn something new every day!)

Avacado said...

I need more sleep this year. I only get 7 hours of sleep a night, which is not enough, and I am always tired. According to doctors everywhere, you should get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Also, according to Stayhealthy.com, If you only get 7 hours of sleep a night, you lose a days sleep weekly!
Therefore, this new year I need to get more sleep like the tip website says.

Avacado said...

@ Sarah G.
I agree with you that staying healthy and active is very important during the winter months so you don't become unhealthy. During the winter, people tend to exercise less due to cold weather, and eat heavier foods. This can cause weight gain, which is bad for your health. In addition, during the holidays, when you go to parties, you may eat to much and gain a few pounds, which is bad. Therefore, since during the holiday season we tend to be less active, it is important to stay active and healthy.

JVG412 said...

I try my best to get ten hours of sleep every night, but I only end up getting 8 or 9. It's still good, but I get colds way too often. It's probably because I don't drink milk on a regular basis. I eat all of the vegetables, but I always end up getting the thing I don't get vaccinated for. I get the flu, the I get the flu vaccine, and so on. I tend to never get sick while I'm playing baseball, so the trick for me is to stay active.

DR. Bubblesquash said...

I currently only sleep more and don't do any of the other ones, and another way to stay healthy is to wash your hands so you don't get minor colds.

DR. Bubblesquash said...

@Kayleigh I agree with you these are the only things that i currently do and I don't like to drink milk.

Pandanut12 said...

@Matt W.
I agree with you because milk is very good for you. I know this because it is fortified in calcium, as well as protein and vitamins A and B12. All these things help keep you healthy and strong, which proves that milk is good for you.

marktex5025 said...

I actually do drink a lot more milk in the summer because it helps me fall asleep. I learned that the milk makes you sleepy, so at night time, I will make myself a glass of warm milk. Therefore, in order to get more sleep, and get rested up for school, I will drink some warm milk.

marktex5025 said...

@JVG412
I also try to get 10 hours of sleep at night because I hate it when I'm tired at school. Unfortunately, I also only end up getting 8-9 hours. But I've heard that for our age, it's good to get anywhere from 7-9 hours of sleep. Therefore, I think that both of us could say that we get a good sleep.

CandyS. said...

Whenever I get a cold, I always make sure to eat a lot of citrus fruits because they have certain properties that can increase your body's immunity. I also try to get a lot of sleep, like it said in the article. When you build up your immune system and give your body time to rest and heal, the outcome is sure to be great!

Muffin Man 101 said...

I always try to stay healthy in the winter time. I do tips 1-4 on my own, but I didn't know that they can keep you healthy. I will try to eat more breakfast even though I never have time because i'm trying to get more sleep, as ironic as that sounds. This will hopefully help me stay healthy because for some reason I constantly get sick in the beginning of winter.

Jess M said...

I think it's important to follow these tips because it's not fun to be sick especially around holidays. I do most of the things the website talked about. I always have fruit when i get home from school and vegetables for dinner. I make sure i sleep for at least 8 hours at night and when i don't i just sleep late on the weekends. I get plenty of exercise because everyday after school I dance and sometimes soccer. I don't drink milk that often but i have dairy products like cheese and yogurt. My family especially me and my mom get sick in winter so i think its important to do whatever you can to stay healthy especially in winter.

Jess M said...

@ Lauren. I think it's good that you get plenty of exercise and eat things good for your body. Thats important so you not get sick in winter but also stay healthy all year long. I don't think some kids are exercising as much as they should and thats not good because even if you get sleep and eat good your body still has no way to let out energy. So i think it's a good thing when people not only eat right but exercise a lot too.

THE BIG RU said...

I currently do all but one of those tips. I don't eat a lot of vegetables. I would like to start though because it is better just to eat it and then you would feel better and you won't get that sickness during the winter that you would normally get if you don't follow those tips. I follow those tips and i haven't gotten sick yet this winter. Therefore, I encourage everyone to follow those tips so you don't have to stay in bed with a thermometer in your mouth all day.

THE BIG RU said...

@matt W. I agree with you that milk is very important for you. I drink milk twice a day morning and night so it is a very good source of calcium which eventually pays off to not getting sick. Even if you don't like milk or vegetables eat and drink them so then you don't get sick in the future and you regret it. Therefore, every tip in that website is important but I think the milk one is the best for you to not get the flu or any type of sickness.

@Anna F... I also do most of the goals and get lots of exercise which is very important and I don't get sick all that often.

Ghost said...

Some tips I use is to dress warmer, and drink more fluids. When I sleep I use more covers and blankets because it gets cold and more heat protects your immune system. I also drink more milk because it not only protects my skeletal system but it helps my immune system as well. Overall I think that using these tips will save you from some winter madness bugs but then again there is nothing you really can do if its all around. Hope my tips helped!

Ghost said...

@Demon under your bed

Ummmm I don't see a scientific reason why raising you feet above your body would do any good. I thought that you did that when you hurt yourself not when you are sick. All that does is makes it easier for your arteries to pump blood back to your heart.

Anonymous said...

I have not done any of these before because they seem kind of weird to do
i mean like you should always eat healthy and that a lot of people drink milk and everyone sleeps these are all of the normal things that people do and that we still get colds I think that people should just dress warm.

Anonymous said...

There are a lot of people who do not do any of these things to prevent a cold.

Anonymous said...

I do do most of these like drink alot of milk i usually have 2 or 3 glasses a day. and eat alot of fruits and vegtable's cause i eat them for dinner and lunch.

I agree with ghost because when you dress warmer you have a less chance of getting sick. But sometimes that doesn’t help cause one time I went on a camping trip and it was freezing and I dressed really warm and not only was I still cold I got Pneumonia.

Isabelle G. said...

I have actually been quiet sick lately and after reading this article I found some reasons why. First of all I barely ever get over eight hours of sleep and according to the article that is not healthy. Secong of all I don't really drink milk. In the winter months I usaully form a terrible cough and I have been told to stay away from to stay away from dairy when that happens and apparently I have got it all wrong. Thirdly in the winter I don't eat as nearly as many fruits as I do in the summer. I was under most fruits are out of season in the winter and therefore are not even worth buying. This article was very interesting and I learned some new tips I will surrey engage in during the winter months.

Isabelle G. said...

@Alvacado
I agree with you getting a lot of sleep is very beneficial to your body. I don't get nearly as much sleep as I am supposed to and in turn I am constantly exhausted and run downed. This has a negative effect on my health. During the school year I get sick more often then I do in then summer. This is because in the summer I don't stay up with homework and rise with the sun to catch the bus.

KirillR98 said...

I don't do any of these tips but I would really like to when I have the time. I really don't know any other tips on beating the winter sickness. People who stay indoors more than outdoors get sick easier, so I avoid that by going outside for 15-20 minutes a day and doing something outside.

The1 said...

I do most of these tips because I dislike getting sick. It makes you feel horrible and you can't do the things that you need to do. Things like school. I rarely get sick but when I do it is usually pretty bad. The last time I was sick I missed 1 day of school because bloodwork had to be done. I had this nasty rash that was very painful with an itchy-burning sensations. You can avoid getting sick by opening windows but sometimes you can not help it.

Hayley M said...

Honestly, I don't do a single one of these things. I usually go to sleep at around 1 in the morning and wake up at 6 or 6:30, reducing my sleep, I HATE milk with a burnign passion, I don't eat MORE fruits and vegetables i just eat the same amount I did before, I don't spend to muhc time with my family (therefore we don't do activitities together), and I never eat breakfast. But, even though I don't do any of these I have never gotten the stomach bug and barely ever get colds. I Just stay warm and have good hygeine.

Hayley M said...

@KirillR96, I agree with you. I don't do any of these either but I would like to start. I have gotten a cold this year and I think it was because I haven't been keeping my body healthy. I haven't been getting the right amount of sleep, or eating much at all let alone fruits and vegetables. Nor have I eaten breakfast in the past four years.

Devon S. said...

I actually do the opposite of what this article says during the winter! During the winter I sleep very little and I hate playing winter sports because I despise snow. Also, I almost never eat breakfast in the morning since I am always rushing to get on the bus so I end up not eating a lot of healthy food or drinking a lot of milk. I don't have any other tips for not getting sick, but to just try to keep your distance from people who are sick. Although I am currently not using these ideas I think it is a good idea to start because it would keep me from getting sick. If I follow the examples I wouldn't get sick and wouldn't have to miss school.

Devon S. said...

@Demon under your Bed
I understand that you like the taste of yoohoo, nesquake, and hersheys, but I wouldn't count them as milk. They add a lot of sugar and sweeteners to these drinks until they aren't very good for you anymore. These drinks are kind of like eggnog where they add so much cream to the drink it becomes unhealthy for you. If you want to stop yourself from getting sick it's a good idea to drink milk instead.

panthers502 said...

well i have a cold now and i am going to try and do some of these tips and when i heal, i am hoping i will NOT GET IT AGAIN!

KirillR98 said...

@Hayley M
I agree with you because I have never done any of these things to help prevent the "stomach bug". I go to sleep around 11 at night and wake up at 6 in the morning. That's 7 hours of sleep (much less than I need), I really don't like milk at all, I eat the same amount of fruits and vegetables as I did last year, and I don't do many "family activities". Even though I don't do any of these tips, I only get colds when it goes through my family.

ShyWolf32 said...

I have done some of these things such as drink milk nad such, but drinking a glass of orange juice every day with keep your immune systems up, because orange juice has a lot of vitam c. Also make sure its a FULL GLASS or you may not have enough vitam c. I drink a glass of orange juice every day and I haven't gotten sick all year its a great way to keep healty too.

ShyWolf32 said...

@KirillR98 I agree that you never done any of these things, but you still should or try some other ways like drinking a glass of orange juice every day, or sneezing into you elbow or use a tissue.

@The1
I also dislike getting sick because it makes me feel terrible. One of the worst parts of getting sick in my opinion is being confined to my bedroom or being told to sleep. I only like to sleep when I'm tired and in the middle of the day I can't just fall asleep. I also don't like being stuck in one place which is what happens when you are sick. Lots of times when I get sick my throat hurts which is annoying and I have to blow my nose which makes me feel sicker. Also, I feel really weak when I am sick which is one of my least favorite feelings. In conclusion, I like you dislike becoming sick because it feels terrible when your throat hurts, your nose is runny or congested, you become weak, etc.

RyanT. said...

I do most of these things. I tend to sleep more in the winter on snow days and things like that. I already drink 3 or 4 glasses of milk a day so i think i am good there. I dont eat many vegetables, but i do eat fruits(pears are my favorite). My family doesnt do much activity outside because of the past major surgeries that my parents have had, though me and my little brother do go sledding and stuff like that. I dont have porridge in the morning. Mostly cereal. I don't really know anything else to do. Overall i do most of these things and i will try to do all of them.
