The polls have closed and the results are in...April book clubs will be Mystery books. Now the question is...what do you want for a final assessment of this book club. My thoughts always go right to an essay, but I am open to suggestions. Remember, an assessment needs to be designed so that you can show that you have read and understood the text as well as can take that understanding and apply it to your life and the world around you.

I think that we should do a group powerpoint or video based on our book because it allows people to put more effort and creativity into it. In an essay you cannot do those things and they can be boring and feel like they are dragging on. Although in a power point or video we can use visuals and show our speaking skills for a video or our article writing on the powerpoint. Therfore essays are boring lets do something else!!!
I think that doing a group book talk would be a good idea for a final assessment, because it is more interesting for the class to listen to, and allows the group to practice speaking and preparing a speech. I think we can all agree that writing essays is boring, but in my opinion, hearing good book talks is interesting for the whole class. Also, public speaking is important to learn at this age, and I would like to try doing it as a group. Therefore, a group book talk would be better than an essay.
I think that a group movie trailer would be a great idea because it's very entertaining for the class to watch. I think that this would be better than essays because most people on our team dont like essay. Therefore, a moviee trailer would have a better affect on the class
I think a group move trailer would be good since the whole class can enjoy it and it'd be more fun for the students working on it instead of a essay or powerpoint ex. therefore I think a group trailer would be good.
I agree with Hamad that a book trailer would be a great idea. It is something that is different from a boring essay and its more enjoyable for the class all together. Therefore I think we should do a book trailer.
I would also prefer giving a book talk above anything else. Mostly because 1 their easy 2 it's good practice for our speeches. I'm not really crazy about doing an essay because I'm not really an essay person. Also I REALLY think doing a book trailer would be a bad idea. Not everyone is good with computers you know. I, for one, barely know how to do a blog post...
I think that doing a book talk over an essay is way better because book talks show your understanding of the book very well. Also not have to write it down on paper gives you a chance to get a better grade, and not receive any 0s.
We should do a book report because this way people could do whatever they want as long as they cover the criteria. A lot of people on the blog have said they would like to do a movie trailer, I personally don't see that as much fun, but if we did a book report we could do whatever we want as long as we're still relating to the book. A book report is the perfect idea because it leaves the decision up to the students.
I agree with Bailey and the book talk. It'll help with our book talks, giving us others' techniques and also giving us practice. It would show understanding of the book and even give others a reason to read it. The book talk would be a wonderful idea over the essay ('cause essays are tedious and boring!!!!)
I think that each group should decide what they want to do to show they understand the book. Some good ideas could be a powerpoint, a poster, a video. Essays are boring becasue we have to make sure that we did nothing wrong so we do not get a bad grade. It is fun to change it up a little.
i think instead of doing something at the end of book clubs, we should do a journal entry most nights with a question Mr. Horvath gives everyone and discuss it with our groups the next day.
I think you should have us do our own project idea that fits certain criteria; like covers theme, shows the warning in the story, ect. Then we can present it to the class, almost like a book talk. But this will be different because we will be able to use our own ideas. It will be creative, and as long as it fits your rubric, it will show that we read and understood the book.
I think we should do a book talk. I personally enjoy book talks and it can also help us with preparing for our speeches and show that we understand everything well. Plus we haven't done book talks in awhile. I also think something a little more creative would be cool like Maren mentioned like a video. I don't really care what you choose to do.
i agree with dani, i think that we should have mr.horvath give us questions to answer in our journal and then we can discuss it with our groups because it makes sure that you are paying attention throughout the book. If we just do something at the end then we can ask people in our group what the whole story was about without reading. but if we have a journal question every night then it'll be harder to not read and it will make sure that you are understanding the book. therefore if we do journal questions, it will cut down on people not actually reading the book
I like the idea of a group book talk because it will help us improve our public speaking skills and it covers a lot of things like theme, characters etc. This will show that we have an understanding of the book. Also, it would be something different since we never really have done a project with a group. Therefore, because it improves speaking skills, covers a lot of information from the book, and allows us to work in a group, we should do a group book talk.
I think that we should do a group book talk because the whole class will be able to hear about our book. If we write an essay, only will read about our book. However, if we do a group book talk, the whole class will hear about our book in an interesting way. Therefore, we should do a group book talk.
I agree with Maren. I think that groups should be able to pick their own projects, as long as they explain a ccertain criteria that Mr. Horvath will give us. This way projects will become more creative and other people will be more excited to do an end of book club project, insted of doing a boring essay.
I agree with Maren, we should do our own project that fits a rubric because it would make everyone happy. People who want to do a book talk can do a book talk, people who want to do a power point/movie trailer can do a power point/movie trailer, people who want to do an essay can do an essay, etc. Therefore, if everyone does what they want, everyone will be happy if they follows certain criteria.
A good idea for the final assignment is a group book talk because it will show that everyone has read and understood the story. For example, if everyone equally contributes to a book talk, it will show everyone understand the story. Therefore, if the final assignment is a group book talk, it will show who read/understood the story.
I think a book talk with maybe something like a poster or powerpoint is the way to go. When you talk about the book, you can add emotion and its easier to persuade someone to read a book. And the Powerpoint or poster would give the listeners a visual to help them understand what the speakers are saying. Therefore, since a book talk with something else added will provide a more persuasive and effective assignment for book clubs, then i think that is the ideal assignment for book clubs.
We should get an option of doing any project we enjoy that fits the rubric. We wont have anyone unhappy this way. If some people wanted to do a rubric and the other half of the people wanted to do a movie trailer they could. This way it will be more exciting seeing all the varieties of peoples choices.
I also think we should do a book talk instead of an essay. If we do a book talk, the whole class would be able to listen to it and might consider reading it. Like James said, it shows that everyone read and fully understood the book because we each need to be a part of the book talk equally. Therefore, we should definetly do a book talk because it is more creative and interesting than an essay.
I like the idea of a group book talk because it will show how much the group really understood the book, but it will also, like Bailey said, improve speaking skills for speeches. Since our speeches are soon coming up, this would be a great way to practice speaking for them. Also, sometimes the group may not actually read the book or not understand it, so the book talk will see how much they know about it together as a group. Therefore, I like the idea of giving a book talk for two reasons.
I think doing a movie trailer as a group would be a great assessment because it would not only be a great way to show our understanding of the book, but it would also be a whole lot less boring than having to write an essay. For instance, we would actually be able to have a little fun with making our movie trailer instead of sitting at a computer typing up an essay! therefore, making a movie trailer as a group or even just individually would be a lot better.
I think we should do nightly journal responese about our books because it would help to tell if someone was actualy reading the book. An example would be if you make us do a question for homework
and collect the note books at the end of the week and grade them and see if we knew about the book. Therefore we shout do nightly journal responese
i agree with some early comments about doing a movie trailor, Most mystery books can easily be portrayed in film form. This will also give us an opportunity to broaden our horizen beyond writing essays. For example using a camera and actually acting and saying lines would be a nice change for most students. Therefore movie trailors are a new fresh idea.
I think that we should do a trailer! I think this becuase it shows an understanding for the book and it is something new! I think that many people would enjoy makig a trailer for the books they read because it's something that no one this whole year has tried and they are ten times better then a boring essay! Also to make a trailer you have to have an understanding for the book and know what it's about! It would be easy to identify who didn't read the book based on their trailer! Plus I think it would be a fun thing fir the us to present! Therefore, making a trailer would be a good, fun, new, experience for us to try and will be easy for mr horvath to see who really read the book and who didn't!
I think we should do a poster. I think we should do a poster because posters give good ideas of what goes on in a story. With a poster you can easily know what the stories about by looking at a descriptive drawing or reading a caption listed on the poster. Therefore posters should ne assigned for the book club project because u can easily tell what the story is about by viewing the poster.
I think that each group should decide what they want to do because each group is reading a different book. For example, it may be easier to do a poster on one book and a trailer on another. Therefore, if the group could choose, it would be more beneficial and overall better for them!!
I agree with the other students that we should do a movie trailer. We should do this because it will be fun. An essay is boring, but in a movie trawler we can be creative. So over all... I say movie trailer
Mystery books can go either way. If they are a good mystery and actually keep you interested until the end when everything comes together they can be fun and interesting to read. If the author does a poor job of keeping you interested throughout the book then they are boring and pointless to read
I think that it’s ok and its better than the other book club. I think this book club chose is better because it’s going to be more interesting to read.
I think making movie trailers as a group would be a great way to show the understanding of a book. They are something new and also entertaining to watch. I also agree with what Rory said how a group should be able to choose. Some books are described better some ways than others. Therefore we should do movie trailers or just be able to choose how to show an understanding of the book.
I think that we should all have the chance to pick our own project as long as it has to do with really understanding the book. We should have a day with our group to discuss what we want to do as our project and the present our idea to Mr. Horvath and then he can accept it, modify it or say that he does not like the idea and let us think of another one. I think that we are all good at different things and by allowing us to chose our project will not only demonstrate whether or not we uderstand the book but gives us the chance to get a goo grade as well and i think we all want that.
I think that each group should do what they want that tells you that they read the book. For example, one group can do a movie trailer and one group can do a group book talk. We should do this because everybody's project will not be the same and it will make it more interesting when we present. Therefore, everybody should pick how they want to present that they read the book.
I think a final essay will do just fine because you can express what you think on your essay. You can get different ideas from other people in your group when doing a group project, but you may disagree with them. 55% of all kids would rather do an essay than something involving a group because they tell what they think of the book and not what others opinions are or have to say. Therefore, someone doing an essay, will tell better connections to their selves and say what they think is right about the book.
The book club book for April should be mystery becuase everyone likes it. In most movies or books there is mystery.Kids love to solve them and guess what will happen next. Therefore the book club book should be mystery.
I definitely agree with Bailey and all the others. We should do a group book talk becuase it practices teamwork and public speaking.
