Why do you Like that?

submitted by Bailey - When people talk about their favorite composers/singers/artists is it because they truly enjoy the music or are they looking to define themselves and be judged based on the music they like?

Personally, I love art and music because I cansee heart and imagination and passion in them. Like in claude monet's water lilies I can see imagination and heart. In most statues I can tell they were crafted by a loving hand. In the Venus de Milo, there are so many details and it seems real, and you can tell it took someone time and effort and heart to make her.
In music I love to hear passion. Like in Blue October's Hate Me, I can hear he cares about what his singing, he's not just singing because he needs to make another song to make the album.
And on the judging part, I could care less what people think of the art and music I like.

I like what I like because I like it and it has nothing to do with anybody else. When I talk about what kind of music I like to others, I'm not looking for judgement, I just honestly love music and a lot of the stuff I listen to is not very well known. I just want other people to be able to listen to it and enjoy it like I do.

I like what I listen to, not if everyone else listens to it too, when I talk about what kind of music I listen to I don't care about negative judgement. I listen to what I listen to because I like it.

I believe it all depends on the person, because some people are very care-free and don’t mind taking the risk of being an individual, and some people would rather blend in with society. I am certain that there are those who do not care what anyone else thinks of them, and just like they wear and do what they want to do, they listen to the music of their liking, instead of letting society influence them. At the same time, there are the types of people who will say that they hate Justin Bieber's music because that's what everyone else says, and they only like the music that is played on KC101, because that is the most popular radio station. Therefore, I think that the music choice of people all depends on their personality and whether they like to stand out or blend into society.

I agree with Kami. I think it all depends on the person. Some people don't care what others think, and will like what they want to like. However, there are people who will pretend to like something just because everyone else likes it too. For example, one kid might like country music, but won't admit it because it's not the most popular. On the other hand, one kid might not care to say they like country music when everyone else likes pop. Therefore, it all depends on whether or not a person is willing to be honest about the kind of music they like. Most of the time, a kid will pretend to like something that everyone else likes because they don't want to get made fun of.

I listen to whatever type of music I like because it kind of defines a part of me. For example, even if some people may not like Justin Bieber, I still listen to him because I like that type of music. It has nothing to do with how popular he is. I don't even care about that. I like the music he makes so I listen to it. Therefore, I don't listen to music based on popularity, I base it on if I PERSONALLY like that genre of music.

I like what I like because it defines me as the individual I am. I think that you can tell a lot about a person based on what kind of music they listen to or what they do outside of school. For example, if someone were to listen to classical music, someone can define that person as someone who is mellow and likes to relax. However, sometimes when people judge others by the tyoe of music they listen to or what they like to do, their interpretations can be completey wrong to what that person is really like. Therefore, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, because what you think can be completely wrong.

When I any type of music, I dont really care what anyone says about it. The music I like really defines me, thats who I am. Therefore you should not really care what anyone else thinks because you are being yourself.

I like the kind of music I listen to because I find ways to connect to it. For example, in "Ignorance," by Paramore, they talk about how some people pretend to not know someone. That happens to me sometimes, well kind of. Sometimes, people act differently around me and it makes me feel connected because I know I'm not the only one that happens to. Music makes me feel connected.

I listen to the type of music I like. I do not care what anybody else says. The type of music I listen to defines me. Therefore, I listen to the type of music I like.

I listen to the type of music that i like because i think it defines who i am. Being who you are is important and it starts with something as simple as music. Listening to your own music makes you who you are. You dont have to listen to the same music as others just to fit in. Therefore I, and everyone else should listen to the music they like because it makes you who you are.

Normally, I only like music, and don't care about people's thoughts because of the consequence. If I always liked songs that other people like, it would show that I know nothing about music. I would just be a "follower".
However, sometimes I have to like a song to survive socially. If I hated a song everyone liked, I would be an outcast. Like right now, I do not like UConn, so I am basically already an outcast. Some people even give me mean looks in the hallway for it. So to avoid that to happen to music, I sometimes lie about what music I like, and I am pretty sure other people do that, too

I listen to the music i like because I don't care if people judge what types of music i listen too.I think the music a person listens to helps show there personality.

Personally, I like the type of music i listen to and the artists I listen to because I enjoy the way their music sounds. I like all different genres of music and don't listen to a specific one just to fit it. I don't let other people's likings influence me too often. For example, one of my favorite bands is Passion Pit (a techno band). I love the sound of techno music. It is so catchy. A lot of my friends don't like the way their music sounds and I am completely fine with it. It doesn't stop me from listening to it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Unfortunately there are people who listen to the music they listen to to fit in. For example, a large group of kids listen to rap music. Some kids force themselves to listen to that to fit in with that group of people. I am not judging but i think that you shouldn't let people influence to you.

I think that people tend to find a song or two that they like, then like other songs similiar to it just so they can have a type of song. For example, I have a friend who liked a rap song alot, then started to like a ton of other ones, even the bad ones, just to classify herself. Personally, I will like the songs I like, but feel free to not like a song and stay open to others. Just like Caroline said, I choose my music without trying to put a label on myself.

I think that a lot of people listen to the type of music that they do because of its image. A lot of my friends started listening to alternative music because they liked the idea of undiscovered bands and being an individual. Music is more then just the sound it also has the label and experince that comes along with it. I believe that many people don't always love the music they listen to but they like the artist's looks or the band's teeshirts and slogans. It's all about finding who you are through music and not trying to look at the label thats on the music just finding what you like. Therefore these days many people (unlike me) look for the image of a song and not the actual lyrics and music behind it.

I think that a lot of people like songs or artists because other people like them. Personally i like music because of the lyrics and the beat, its all that i look at. I could care less if anybody else likes it or if everybody hates the person. Also i like what message the person says behind the song,or if it tells a story. therefore, i dont care what anybody thinks about the music i listen to but i do think that alot of people like songs or artists because their friends do.

I think people like preticular songs or artists because its who they are that makes up what they like. For example once i met this kid named Sean and he liked to listen to blink 182 because he some what reflected there songs into his life from there lryics and how they act. Therefore people do reflect the music they listen to and he is a true mirrow image the music he listens too.

I like rock and rap because I like the sound of them, and they define you as a person a little bit. Those two things are why I like rock and rap because most rock talks about memories and I like to look back on good and bad memories to learn lessons. I like rap becausse I like to push myself and workout, and rap amps me up. Therefore, these types of music reflect me as a person, and what I like to do so thats why I like them.

dave said...

I'm not a person who lets others affect what music I like or what music I say I like because I try to be myself not somebody else. It is important to be yourself and to do so you must like what you want to like because they are not me. Therefore when successfully being myself I'm not letting anyone but myself decide what music I like.

i not only love listening to music but i love playing it because each song is like a story. In every song there is a message, sometimes secret sometimes explicit. Each song is like a time capsule. if you listen to a song a lot now and the listen again in a year or so, it can bring back memories. Stories bring back memories as well. Therefore i love music because they tell a great story.

I love listning to music were ever you go in the worl you can always compare music

I think that people like a song because of both. They normally do actually like the song but in addition, they also are choosing that type of music because it is popular. I know this because I can relate to it. When I was in 3rd-4th grade, I realized that people started listening to KC101. Obviously I started listening to it too because of its popularity but eventually I like listening to that music anyways! So really it involves both.

I do think that people pick songs that they like, but they also like the songs that reflect them in a good way. I personally like songs because of the lyrics and the music not because everyone else likes it or it defines me as a certain person.

Personnally i like the music i listen to because of its beat and lyrics. I also agree that most people listen to music just to fit it. However, they dont relize how stupid the lyrics are. They just like it because of its beat.

I think that most people today listen to the music they would like to hear. Personally, Other people don't have affect on the music I listen to. My father hates the music I listen to but that doesn't stop. I don't care what other music humans listen to. Therfore, I listen to the music I like.

I dont think alot of people listen to the music i like like Florence and the machine and one republic. alot of people seem to like rap. which i hate. (no offense to people who like it)i dont care what other people listen to its what i personaly like that matters to me. some of my friends think the music i listen to isnt good but i listen to it anyway because i dont really like their music either.

Jenna C said...

I think sometimes people tend to listen to music their friends like but they don't actually like just so they won't get picked on based on the type of music they like. I think that just because you think "everyone" listens to that type of music doesn't mean you have to listen to that music. The music you listen to should reflect what you like and are interested in, not what everyone else likes.

Just In Case said...

I definitely do not listen to any music I don't like. I do get urges to buy music that other people listen to, but when i hear the preview, I change my mind. I enjoy listening to music the either speaks to me or if i just like the music. You shouldn't be forced to listen to music you don't like just because everyone else likes that music. Music was created for enjoyment, not just another way to fall into peer pressure. Therefore, since many people buy music because of peer pressure, I believe that people buy music because everyone else likes that music too.

i think most people just listen to music that will make them look 'cool'. some people actually like the music they listen to.

Billy L. said...

Listening to music in my spare time is one of my favorite things to do and playing it on guitar is just as fun. Although I listen to my music because it interests me and i really enjoy it, I think that many people will just listen to mainstream music to seem cool. When I see what people listen to, most of the time, all I see all the same exact singer and it makes me wonder if they are really that good or it's just the mainstream. Therefore, I think that many people will listen to music to seem cool, and not for the fun of it like it was made for.

Nicole Y. said...

To a certain degree I do think that a lot of people like certain songs just because its what's "cool". But in my opinion, music is music. Whether its pop, rock, country, rap, alternative, techno, or whatever, it is all music. It all music. Every song has some type of beat. It may make you look "cool" but maybe it is slightly similar to the real music taste you have.

I listen to the music that I like because I like it. I don't think it defines me as a person it just entertains me like I think it should. For example, I listen to Eminem but that doesn't mean I am and angry person who is going to go hurt somebody. I listen to it because I like that style of music and how he puts feeling into his words. Therefore my music doesn't make me who I am. It just shows what I am interested in.

Gabbyn said...

I think knowing peoples favorite music gives you an idea about them. but some people listen to music you wouldn't expect them to. But you can usually guess what kind of music a person listens to and likes just by looking at them.

Sousa said...

I think people talk about their favorite artists because it shows them who they are as a person. (Steriotype). Listening to heavy metal kind of shows that you have a dark side and rap shows that you like profannity and hang out kind of music. I personally like alternative punk rock and just regular rock like the Goo Goo Dolls. i don't mind what people say about me listening to this music therefore, I can express myself ith who I am with the kind of music that I listen to.

Julia h said...

I enjoy the music I listen to, and it does not define me as a person. I listen to the music I like, and I'm not afraid to say I don't like a song that's popular and everyone else likes. For example, everyone loves "Justin Bieber" but i personally don't at all. Therefore, I listen to the music that I like, not what is "in".

gaby said...

I think it depends on the person, some people like to go with the flow and do what others think are cool, others aren't afraid of what people think of the so they listen and like what they want. I don't really care what people think of me i just care what i think of me. i am positive that there people that say they hahte justin bieber, when they really have the biggest crush on him. They lie because they are worried what people will think of them.

Kristen L. said...

Unfutunately, a lot of people are judged today and a lot of people are looking to be judged based on their morals and beliefs. A big part of the way people define themselves if by the music they listen to. It depends who the person is. It depends if they are easily swayed by others choices. I listen to music because I like it. I listen to a wide variety of music because of the actual music and lyrics, not based on what other people think.

Lions44 said...

I think that most people tell each other what music or what artist they like becuase they believe they will be judged.
Personally I dont care what people think about the kinds of music i listen to. I like old school music like Bow Wow, R Kelly, and Jay Z. Therefore the music that people listen to sshould not be the way people judge others.

lily said...

Some people depend on others to guide and tell them what they like because they are scared of being rejected. Even in school, people who like different things are in different groups. In my opinion, people who try to be someone they are not, are followers. People should just be who they really are, like the kind of music they enjoy and the art that they adore.

AnnaClaire said...

I have to admit, that is a very interesting post. But, I do have to say, I like my music becuase I like it, not becuase I want someone to fight back about my opinions.

I agree with Anna, strongly on this one. I listen to the music I listen to because I enjoy it. Therefore, I don't care if others judge my music. I listen to it for a reason.

I can honestly say that I listen to teh music I listen to not for anyone else other than me. I think that judging people on the music they listen to is crazy. And whether you listen to The Beatles or Ememim it dosen't matter.

I choose the music I want to listen to based on what I prefer not what my friends like. I think music is something that is a big part of my life because I listen to music mostly all day and it makes me happy and it is stress relieving. Therefore if I listened to what everyone else was listening to I would not have something that would make me happy.

When I am looking on itunes for music I always look for the songs I like and that interest me. I do this because it sort of defines me as a person. Many people don't like Taylor Swift and her music. I happen to like her and her voice. I really could care less of who likes her and who doesn't. Therefore, I don't care what other people think about the music I listen to. As long as I like it, I am fine.
