What's to a Story
This article about stories is a difficult read but has some interesting ideas about the importance (or lack of importance) of the long fiction story that we are used to.

A story is something that leaves you in suspense a story is about love a story is dreaming taking one thought and combining it into two thoughts. A story is excitment or entertainment to ones ability of working his or her way through an articl a book or a magazine there is alot more to a story than just white pages and black words.
I think that the classic original fiction story that we know of today is just the perfect way to write a story. If someone changed the traditional way of writing fictional stories, that is in my opinion a problem. However, it is also my opinion that someone could add on to the traditional way of writing and incorporate something from the traditional method swell. That is the perfect way for me to write a story.
@ Simeong- I completely agree with what you wrote because a story is made up of everything that you stated and even more. The possibilities to build a good story are endless in the write person's hands. A good story truly is made up of more than just a white page with black words.

A story is can be any genre but most people prefer the "oringal fiction" as Brian C. stated. When Brian C. was comenting on Simeong he said that a story is made up more than a white page and black letters/words. A story is something that the authors want you to belive in.
Brian C. I agree ith yuo that a story is more than white paper and black words. A orginal fiction story are the best and every author should drive for that.
There was one line in this article that I thought to be interesting was, "The argument here is that the world has become immensely complicated and the complex stories of our novels help us to see our way through it, to shape a trajectory for ourselves in the increasingly fragmented and ill-defined social world we move in. " I really love this line because it made me think of the saying "history often repeats itself" It made me think of this because many of the classics are often remade or altered into something new. Meaning that people are not coming up with new ideas, not just in books but in other things like the social media, fashion, music, etc. So if you have a firm stance on the foundation and the reality of the past than you will have a better understanding of the future.
I agree with what Brian C said, "a story is made up of everything that you stated and even more." This brought me back to the article where it states, " though of course stories are by no means the exclusive territory of novels; the political, sports, and crime pages of the newspapers are full of fascinating stories, many of them extremely challenging and complex. What the novel offers, however, is a tale mediated by the individual writer who works hard to shape it and deliver it in a way that he or she feels is especially attractive, compelling, and right." This connects to his comment because maybe an author takes a true story found in the local newspapers and alters it into something new and more suspenseful for the reader so it sells.
I agree with @Brian C. He said, "I think that the classic original fiction story that we know of today is just the perfect way to write a story." I feel the same way. The way authors and people write most fiction stories today is fine. They are very entertaining with a lot of suspense. They also usually incorporate some sort of message or lesson that should come across to the reader so they learn something. I don't know what other way fiction stories should be written, other than the way they are now.
Fiction stories are great. Some of the things that authors include in great fiction books are that they are written with excitement, lots of details, and enthusiastic tones in the characters. If this type of book has all of this, it is usually really enjoyable to read. I, personally, like reading most fiction books. Sometimes they can be realistic, yet made-up at the same time. You can really imagine what's going on in the book, just in your head. Fiction books can also be easy to relate to. A lot of the times you can connect to the characters thoughts, feelings, or actions.
Something that i found to be interesting in this artical was when it said, "Rather the problem is that preacher and polemicist want us to accept just one, mutually exclusive set of stories, one vision, which we must believe is true." "People tend to use stories of whatever kind to bolster their beliefs, not to question them." I think this was interesting because i believe it to be true. Just think about society when slavery had just begun. The white people in America believed that they were better than black people. They also thought that the black people should be treated like dirt. They never questioned their beliefs and they only believe in that version of life. This is why i thought this line in the artical to be interesting.
I think that fiction stories are fun to read, but are not as important. They are fun to read and usually kids find them to be more interesting, but they do not give us real information which is what some people think. Also, people use stories to make anything they want happen, like people make up stories. This leads me to wonder if fictional stories should be considered lies or to be bad. Some people think that fiction stories are horrible because I actually read an article once, I forget were, about a little boy who had read a story about a boy that could control sand so he had his friends bury him alive and he died from suffocation! So, in conclusion, I do not think fictional stories are that important because they don't give us good information, can create problems and even cause death!
@Sarah G. I agree with you about that article being interesting because it is true that people use stories sometimes to make themselves believe many things like about how black people were not as good. This also happened during the Holocaust because Hitler told people a lot of stories about Jews being bad, so they thought that they were bad and had to be killed!
@Anonymous i gree with you when you said that this line from the book was really interesting, "The argument here is that the world has become immensely complicated and the complex stories of our novels help us to see our way through it, to shape a trajectory for ourselves in the increasingly fragmented and ill-defined social world we move in." The only differance is that i think this is interesting for different reasons, i makes me notice how much articals, books, and magazines shape how we act and what we do. This line makes me realize how much reading moldes society. This is why i agree with you that this line from the artical is so interesting.
I personally think that we need stories. Not want; NEED. We NEED stories to take us on exciting adventures, whether it be defeating an evil sorcerer, finding true love, or searching for your inner self, stories can do all of this while never leaving the comfort of your couch and your reading light. If anyone's ever read a bad book and then finished it, they would be glad. But then they would have nothing else to do in their free time, you would be sad that it's over. So do we NEED stories? Yes. We do.
@Grace S., I agree with you. Fiction stories are amazing and they give the reader excitement, and they make the reader say 'Wow, I wish I was him/her" and that's why we NEED stories.
My opinion of a good fiction story is excactly the ones that we have today. Almost all of the fiction stories that I have read had me instantly hooked thinking, "Whoa I wish that that could happen to me!" or "Why can't I be him/her?" Stories are a great part of how we have built society. There might have been a story that inspired steve jobs to create apple! Stories are important to society and how we live everyday like. They lead us to beliefs and give us knowledge of things that are fictional yet might have some non-fictional value. If stories were to just dissapear, well then there would be no fun in life. Stories are amazing and are perfect the way they are today.
I agree. This is because we do NEED stories. We also NEED them to take us on mystical adventures and journey's to different lands. No matter if they are about love, magic, personal properties, or action. Even if it is a bad book and you hurry to finish it. Once you finish it you will have nothing to do but sit on the couch, get fat, and watch TV. If you took your time reading or you read another book, you wouldn't have to take the risk of getting fat. We NEED stories, not only to keep us active, but to keep our minds active.
