When Do You Put it Down

Here is a situation I know everyone has encountered...I picked up a book the other day because it was strongly recommended by a friend of mine. After reading about 40 pages I thought, "This is amusing but not really outstanding." The book is really long and I usually trust my friend's judgment on literature so I am continuing to read it. It is not that the book is bad, it is just that I know it is going to take me a while to get through and I don't know if it's worth it...my question is, "When do you decide enough is enough and just put the book down and find something else to read?"

When someone recommends me a book and if im not likeing it I will usally put it down when i reach page 100 because why read a book if you dont like, when you can be reading a book you can enjoy.

When I get a book recommended to me, I like Connor will read some of the book. However, if I dont like it by the end of the second chapter, or it's just painful to read, I'll stop.

I think you are suppost to put the book down when you have read enough into the book, like say 50 pages, because that way you are far enough into it. within the first 50 pages if its really boring, or not exciting I would put it down,

Usually, when a book is recommended for me, I love it. But, if I am around page 100 and I hate it, I just put it down and try to find another book.

If a book is recomended to me I will try to read it to the end because i have read a lot of books that the beggining is terrible but the end is really good.

Well, I'm rather picky so if I don't start to get into the book after the first page or so, I'll usually just put it down. On some occasions, I stop reading after the first paragraph.

For me, i will usually read at least 50 pages, or maybe 75 pages. I'll try and search for a part in the book where something interesting happens and i will become hooked, but if not, then i beared through 75 pages of something i didn't want to read for nothing.

for me I try to read it but if the book is really boring me and is taking me forever to read I will just stop reading it and go on to another book.

I agree with Dorian, Lauren and Connor. Typically I give a book to page 100 to be good. If it isn't I abandon. Sometimes it is good to take a break from the book and after a couple of months read it again and it might be better.

usally after the first or second chapter and i really dont like it then i'll end up putting it down and reading a book i enjoy. :D

If you're not amused by the book you should put it down around 50-70 pages through the book unless it gets better obviously. Or if the book is too difficult you should put it down because that might be the reason your not finding it amuseing.

I try to read to the end, but if I don’t like it I usually read to the part where the main part is starting to take place. This way if you don’t like the beginning of the action, then there is no way that you will like the rest of the book. I can put it down earlier if it’s harder to read because the words are to challenging like Matt said. You have to at least give the book a fair chance.

If someone recommends me of a book then I would usually read the back of the book. Then if the book seems interesting then I would read it. When I read it to about page 50 and its not interesting as it seemed I put it down and tell that somebody of a horrible choice of picking he/she did. But if the book is interesting by page 50, I keep reading.

Put the book down after reading these comments, though I will probably return to it once I finish rereading the "Dune" series.

if i find a book that i dislike i can't read it. books that are boring to me usually but me sleep. i'll return it and go find another, but i can rarely find books that i like.

If i find a book that i dislike then i usally put it down a third of the way through it. Theres millions of books out there why would i waste my time on one that doesnt intrest me.

if i find a book i dislike i usually put it down after the first chapter. if a book is boring theres no point in reading on. i'll find a better book so i dont waste my time.

If I start reading a book and find I don't like it I usually put it down after the first two chapters. If I don't like a book I don't feel bad for putting it down because I know that there are other books that I would rather read and I don't want to waste my time reading something I don't like.

I will usually put down a book about half way through it. If it was a quality book it should be interesting before halfway through but some books turn out to be really good at the end but started off pretty bad.

nygiants1 said...

If I read a book and I dislike i will stop reading it after the 1st chapter. A book should be interesting before the 1st chapter because the 1st chapter is what gets the reader hooked into reading the whole book.

Well in most cases if I dont like a book within the first few chapters then I will put it down because (like the person above me said) a good book would have a good hook, so if it it doesnt, it cant be that good. However, if a friend recomends it to me I will stay with it for awhile, because there are a few excellent books that just dont have a good lead to them... it really depends.

Anna D. said...

If there is a recommended book, I read the back and if it does not really grab me then I put it down. If it's ok, then i read the lead. And then if it's good then I obviously read the book.

Usually, if I do not like a book I am reading I put it down. However, if I get a book recommended by a friend and I am getting bored and frustrated, I will try and push myself through it, but usually a strongly recommended book doesn't disapoint me.

I think that if the book isn't good enough to hook you in at the beginning then the ending won't be good enough to make up for the bad beginning. If you don't like a book when you start reading it, put it down after about 80 pages or until it's just painful to read.

AntA said...

i beleive you should use your own jugdement. If the book is not grabbing your attention at all and it doesnt look like it ever will, then put it down right away. If it seems like it has potential then keep reading.

Anna M said...

I would say you should read a good 30 or 40 pages into the book and if you are still not interested then definitely put it down. If your not hooked those first few pages then it is not a good book.

I try to finish any book i start and i give books almost half of the total numbers of pages to let me get into it. I don't like wasting effort and time so unless I hate it and it's taking a while to get through the book I'll finish. If i do end up putting a book down (which is rare)I'll try to mix it in with the new book so I can a least finish it, although there has been some times were i don't mix it in and I restart in 2 months to 4 years and I like the book. There has been one though that i restarted i didn't like again after half the book and i just gave up on it.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Tyler W. I also try to finish almost every book I start, and I sometimes put a book down. If I do put a book down though, I would try it again after 5 months, at most. If I haven’t picked it up by then, I definitely feel like it would have been a total waste of my time!!! I try to give every book I begin to read a shot though. That way, if I don't exactly like the beginning, but I feel like it has a great end, I won’t "miss out" on anything, per say. I also feel that you don’t have to necessarily be hooked by the first pages in order to love a book. A great beginning would be key to get you hooked, but some wonderful books don’t start off like that.

Kim M said...

I am very picky about what I read and usually if I don't like the book within the first like 10 to 30 pages I put it down. This is sometimes a bad thing because I miss out on the rest of the book if it does end up getting better. Other books I know I'm not going to enjoy just by the way the author's writing style is.

I usually like books that are recomended to me. If I decide I am not into a book, I may put it down when I am more than halfway done. Sometimes, it can take less than a page to convince me whether or not to read something. This shows how important a good lead is.

If a book is recomended for me to read i usually read it. If i dont like it and im on page 50 I would probably put it down. Why would I read a book that doesnt interest me when there are millions of other books out there for me to read.

I am picky when it comes to books, so when a book is recomended to me i will decide whether i like it or not within the first 25 pages. This is because if i dont like a book there is no point in reading it. There are many other books out there that i could choose from.

When it comes to putting down books i usually read a couple of pages and then if it doesn't grab me after that then that is when i usually put it down.

With books for me, i know if ill like it just by the first chapter. i like a certain genre of books. If you are having questions about whether to keep reading or not, put the book down, and find something that you will look forward to reading.

lionsx50 said...

put it down if u dont like it... its simple i would decide in the first fifty pages usually

sorry friend but if it is page 75 and i don't like it i'm not going to finish

If a friend recommends a book to me I will normally finish it so we can have a conversation and discuss it. The only instance in which I would not finish a book recommended to me is if it is dull and lacking flair and I have a book on deck that I am very excited to read.

AdamV said...

If a friend told me to read a book I would read it unless it was really bad (slow and dull). I would most likely not stop reading it because maybe it will get better and I respect their opinion. If I am reading two books at the time then I will probably stop reading the boring one and read more of the exciting on

This has never happened to me becuase all my friends know me enough to know the types of books I like to read. The friends that recomend me to read books are the ones that love to read and we all enjoy the same types of books. But my breaking point in a book is after a read from 100 to 200 pages, depending on the size of the book, and nothing has happened.

KaitlynO said...

Usually if the first 100 pages aren't good then I just put it down. I go to page 100 because that usually gives the book enough time to actually get into the story. So if I don't like it by then I just put it down.

I think that if somebody reccomends a book to you but you find out that you dont really like it then you should put it down at the 100th page or before . . . like someone mentioned before, why waste reading a book that is only "O.K." when you can be reading another one that you may get very into! I look at it as just a big waste of time.

I usually put a book down if the first page doesnt sound interesting at all or im not going to like that first page, then im not going to read the rest of the book. its pointless if you read something you dont want to because you will learn NOTHING!

Sousa said...

I would put the book down if the first couple pages or the back seems boring. Or if it is a type of book I don't really like. I have 1 strategie for this which is to read the first five pages of the book, if you don't like it or if it is boring, put it back. If you like it, keep reading it. It's simple!

AbbyS said...

I usually would put the book down when I feel the book isn't one that seems interesting or one I really don't enjoy in general. This doesn't happen to me that often because most of the time I pick a book I've heard is good, or just a book that i've heard about.

ColleenO. said...

When I get recommended a book I usually give it a try depending on the genre and length of it. I’m not the type of person to read 500 page book but when I do read one I will read to about page 100 and then decide whether or not I will continue on or put it down. For me to put down a book the book must be very boring and have no action or detail in it. I personally love books with action and suspense.

Billy L. said...

When people recommend me to read I book usually I will try reading it. I put it down if it continues to be boring past between pages 30-50 (depending on how long the book is).

kami said...

I usually put a book down if the first 30-50 are not interesting. However if someone recommends me a book then I will most likely read the whole thing or put it down in the middle when I’m certain I wouldn't like it. However like someone already mentioned, there can be a few books out there that start off boring, but the end makes up for it.

Don't put a book down after reading five pages cause clearly some books don't give you much to like after reading five pages. Read the first chapter or so cause who knows? You may actually enjoy it.
