Marking Period 2 Book Clubs

We will be starting book clubs in November.  I am interested in what type of literature you would like to use.  You can pick a genre (historical fiction, biography etc), a time period (pre 1900, early 1900s etc) or maybe even an author (Agatha Christie, Lois Lowry, etc).  This post is for any ideas you have on what we should use as book clubs.  I will check this post early next week and use it to determine what we will do for our first book club.

Something I have always been interested in is Sci-Fi (robots, zombies) also, maybe medieval fantasy or yes, murder mystery, which seems to be very popular.

I would enjoy reading Earnest Hemingway because I recently read one of his books as my classic book and I really enjoyed it. I love his description, suspense, and interesting plot lines. I believe that these would be great novels for a book club.

I believe mysteries are the perfect genre for a book club because they stimulate your mind and require you to use the most reading skills out of any of the prose genres. Fantasy with mystery involved is also as good. The book should also have a big social aspect such as a love aspect intermingled with the good vs. bad. For a time period I think we should use either current 21st century/ late 20th century or Victorian Era maybe a little post Victorian. The best kind of book would be one that has a movie for it that we can watch after as long as there is no compare and contrast essay involved! A good author would be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and I suggest The Valley of Fear (that should be underlined)if we do a Doyle mystery. I suggest this because mystery is the most stimulating genre and 21st/ late 20th century and Victorian/ Post Victorian Era are the most interesting time period.

I think for the book club, you should pick a science-fiction novel. "The Uglies" is a pretty good series because it talks about a world where ugly people are surgically enhanced to become "pretty" at the age of 16. I believe that this book will attract readers and is not your classic science- fiction novel.

AVgleek17 said...

I think a good type of genre for a book club would be mystery because everybody can have their own opinions and then in the end they all come together and have the "ahah!" moment. This genre is usually good literature and keeps a lot of people on the edge of their seats. Plus, it also is good for both girls and boys! In conclusion, a good genre for a book club would be mystery.

AVgleek17 said...

Candy S., I have to disagree with you. I don't think a science- fiction book would be a good for a book club because there isn't as much suspense or anticipation in those books. I think the whole part of book club is to see how people interpret books, and I think a science-fiction novel would be really har to do so. Also, when you mentioned the Pretties book,I don't think it would attract boys. Therfore, I don't believe science-fiction is a good genre for a book club.

Grace S. said...

In my opinion, i think we should probably read mystery books, because they are very entertaining. For example, they are very dramatic and have a lot of suspense, and suspenseful books keep the readers from getting bored like they would maybe reading a non-fiction book. Therefore, I think that the best genre for a book club would have to be mystery.

I love fantasy books and would really love to read them for the book club. I like the ones that involve magic, so I'd read really any of those types of books. One phenomenal series that I love is the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage. Another great series is the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy. These are great book series for people who love fantasy. If they are not used for the book club, I would recommend them to fantasy lovers.

I really like mystery books and fantasy books. Mystery books would be good because they are filled with suspense and they keep you at the edge of your seat to know what happens next. Also fantasy books are really interesting reads. They fill your minds with beliefs and are always hard to put down.

whencupcakesattack said...

@Sir Awesome,
Those are really great examples of books. They are great fantasy ones. Septimus Heap are great books filled with anything mythical and magic. They are awesome for people who really like fantasy and all that kind of stuff.

Grace S. said...

@whencupcakesattack
I agree with your choice of mystery and fantasy books. This is because they do keep you on the edge of your seat and are very suspenseful, which is why I think they would be good genres to read. No one would be getting bored from reading them since there is so much suspense. Therefore, reading fantasy and mystery genres would make a great book club.

I think we should should read mysteries. I think this becasue they are fun, and leave you hanging. Mysteries from the early 1900's I think would be the best because say there is an old house there could be a ghost. That is why I think we should read mysteries.

bieberlover10 said...

@ Grace S.
I agree with you because mysteries are entertaining. They are entertaining because they are suspenseful and it leaves you totally hanging. That is why I agree with you.

Sir Awesome said...

@AVgleek17
I absolutely agree with you that mystery would be a good genre for book club. I think it is great for people to be able to have their own opinions on the same story. It sparks a great debate for everyone reading that book. Mystery would be a great genre also because it stimulates everyone reading it. You actually have to think when reading it. Overall, I agree with you that mystery would be a great genre to read for book club.

JMM126 said...

I like mysteries because it keeps you wondering and interested in whats happening next. It makes you feel like you are in the book. Your mind pictures everything like a movie. Mysteries keep you up and thinking too.

JMM126 said...

@Grace S

I agree with you becayse I also like Mystery books. It does keep you wondering too! And the students wouldnt get bored and they would stay on track on the edge of their feet and wanting to read.

Ryan said...

@JMM126
I agree that we should read a mstery because it builds up a lot of suspense. It makes you want to figure the mystery out and you cam learn a lot about how they use forensics and history to solve crimes.

Ryan said...

I would lke to read a mystery book with a lot of puzzles in it. Mysteries are extremely suspenseful because you want to know who commited the crime. Then the puzzles require brainpower to solve. These types of books require thinking. One good example of one of these books is The da Vinci Code.

!DANCE! said...

The types of books that I enjoy reading are historical fiction and realalistic fi ction. I like these books because for historical ficton you can learn about a point in time without learning about it using real people. For me, I, in a way, learn better when I have a fun story with it. Now, for the realalistic ficton, I like it becuse the events can acually occur in our own lives, so it seems so real and true it makes me read the book more and more. Those are the types of books I like.

!DANCE! said...

@ Grace S.
I agree with you about how you said that suspence makes a reader read more and more. I know thhis because i myself keep on reading when a book has suspence. Another reason why i know that suspence attracts readers is because last year, we had mystery book groups and one of the people in my group wouldnt stop reading the book because of all the suspence. that is why i agree with your statement of suspence making poeple read and read.

Isabelle G. said...

I think we should read a mystery book for book club. We should chose this genre becuase it uses a lot of authors craft and makes the reader think. In mysteries authors use craft like red herrings, foreshadowing and suspense. By reading a mystery we can recognize these crafts and evevn use them in our own writing pieces. Also mysteries make you think. While reading a mystery it is good to make predictions and connections though out the story. This is why I think reading a mystery fr book club will be the most beneficial.

Isabelle G. said...

@ JMM126
I have to agree with you becuase mysteries do keep you up long thinking about them. When I read mysteries it usually takes me a short period of time to do so becuase I think about it even when I am not reading it. Thus me reading the book any chance I get. I think this a good reason to read a mystery book for book club. The book would probably keep kids thinking about it thus having more thought out observations, discussions, and predictions.

The Original Fake said...

I would love to read a mystery because you can have great discussions on a mystery book. I do think Agatha Christie would be a great choice because she is such a great writer. I think Ten Little Indians by her would make a great book club book.

The Original Fake said...

@Sir Awesome I agree with you that the Septimus Heap series would be great for book club. The series has lots of magic and the author did a great job creating her own world, which is an impressive thing to do

my favorite genere is fiction this is my favorite because it is usaully fun to read and it is an experience. also you get to use your imagination because there are not pictures.

maia m said...

A good series might be the maimum ride books for book club because they are mysterieous and very action packed. people will like them because there are not ny boring areas where you wonder when it will get exciting and it is a series so we could read them for a while.

CandyS. said...

I think that you should read either a thriller, puzzling or mystery book for book club. This would pull in a lot of readers, whether they are boys or girls. It would keep kids on the the edge waiting to find out what happens next. These kind of books would captivate the audiences attention so that they are not bored or uninterested.

Alex Z. said...

I really like mystery books because I like endings that aren't predictable. Throughout the book, there would be lots of suspense, red herrings, and maybe even an ending that you have to determine on your own. Mystery books are a fun read because, if written well, you usually don't expect the ending.

Alex Z. said...

@Isabelle G. I agree with you that we should read mystery books because they include a lot of author's craft such as: red herrings, foreshadowing, and suspense. They also make you think. I enjoy reading mysteries that have a twist. The more spence the better because I like to be left hanging wanting to read more. I also enjoy historical fiction because you get reference from the past with an interesting twist. Even though it many not all be real there are some parts and books that are based on the real thing. Therefore mysteries and historical fiction are the genres I enjoy the most.

Lauren said...

@Isabelle G I agree with because mystery books give you a sense of the craft of the author as well as getting the reader thinking and imagining. Mystery books will help to get you better in your writing as well. That's why I also think mystery are good for book clubs.

Mysteries books would be very fun to read in book clubs. I think this because mystery books always have suspense and action, which keep you on the edge of your seat. Also, mysteries make you a better reader, because you have to examine the text more carefully to try and put the clues together and figure out whodunit. Therefore, mystery books would be the best books to read in book clubs.

I agree with Emerson18. I think that a mystery book for a book club would be good. Mysteries make you an active reader because they keep you thinking. Mysteries are puzzles that need to be solved.

\I think that a good genre for the book club is mystery because it will be a great discussion topic. If you choose a mystery, then there will be a lot to discuss like predictions as well as summaries. So if you decide to do mystery type books, then there will always be discussion going on about the book.

@Emerson18
I agree with what you said because mysteries always do keep you on the edge of your seat. Books that keep you on the edge of your seat always tend to have the perfect amount of suspense. So yes, mystery books are great because they keep you waiting to find out what will happen next in the story.

@JMM126
I agree with you that a mystery book will keep our classmates on edge. A mystery book forces you to keep track of the clues and story and pay close attention. For example, you said that mystery books make people want to read the book. Therefore, because a mystery book challenges the reader, the students will want to read the book and will enjoy the book.

NYRangers#1Fan said...

I think we should read mysteries or books with suspense because they are more interesting than any other genre. Mysteries are suspenseful. About.com says, "A good mystery keeps the pages turning and the reader intrigued." People read books for many reasons. However when most people read for fun, they read something suspenseful. Since many well known authors(Grisham, Patterson) were mystery authors, mysteries or books with suspense should be what we read for book club.

I really like horror books when i read. The reason I like these books is because they give you somthing to think about and they keep you tied to the book with everything that is going on. One author that i know and is really good is Stephen King. I am going to start reading one of his books that was made into a movie. And because I liked the movie and really wanted to read and see how it relates. The reason I say horror is my favorite is when i am reading im always wondering whats gonna happen next.

@ NYrangersfan, I disagree with you. It was not a glitch. What happened is kayley f clicked the publish button more than once. this was probably because the computer was slow. I think this was because the internet's cpu usage was high. (as when you're playing a game etc) It says on http://www.techspot.com,

"An overloaded CPU can make a PC unbearably slow. If the CPU spikes happen rarely and correct themselves quickly, don't worry about it. But if they keep coming back or don't go away, you have to find out what's wrong and fix it.
The most obvious culprit is a virus, spyware, or some other malicious software."
And I know that a good fix for this problem is running a full antivirus scan every week. this should keep your computer fast.

My favorite genre is fiction because anything can happen in it. I know this because I have heard of and read fiction books about dragons, nonexistant lands, people and animal societies, fairies, human and animal hybrids, unicorns, and more, all of which do not exist. I have also read fiction stories about wilderness survival, slavery, war, epidemics, life in other countries, and so on, all of which DO exist or have existed at some point. You can only write about things that can or can't happen, so therefore anything can happen in a fiction book.

ILuvGymnastics99 said...

I think that a good genre is adventure. It kind of covers a variety of different types of genres, but relates them to adventure. It could be adventure with aliens, but that could also be classified as Science Fiction.It is a good genre because it is broad one and had many, MANY different books and varieties to choose from. This is why my favorite genre is adventure.

pandanut12 said...

@ShyWolf32
Eragon does not take place in medival times because there are many creatures in that book that do not or ever have existed in real life. I know this because in the book Eragon has a dragon, Saphira, and is friends with the werecat Solembum. These things did not exist during the medival times or otherwise, which proves that Eragon could not have taken place in the medival times.
