The Learner versus the Learned

“In a time of drastic change it is the learners who survive; the ‘learned’ find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists” – Eric Hoffer

This quote has special significance to educators and students.  What do you think it means?  How can it help you live your life?

I think this quote means if you are a teacher or adult who got a full education know what has happened in the past and how things have changed and students are learning about what has happened in the past because it says " the 'learned' find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists". This could help me in my life because if I go to college and get a good education I could one day look back on what happened before I was born and when I was a child and how the world has change and how I lived in a world that no longer exists.

I think that quote means students who learn are ready for the real world. I think thsi becasue in the text it said " the ‘learned’ find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists”. Which would mean they are ready for the real world. Why i think this is if u learn something u are ready for it when you grow up.

Wow Sethblog thats sounds soo ture and makes perfect sense or does it?

Matt Winkler said...

@sethblog
I agree with you. I think it is a fascinating thing to grow up and them look down on the "sprouting buds". While you think you know it all, the world is an ever-changing thing and there is always something to learn

cheerextremelover11 said...

I think that this quote means the more that you learn the easier it will be to survive in the world. but the real world no loger exists because now we are much more developed and we no longer need that knolege because it does not help only the new knolege does.

I think this Quote will help you live life because when you learn something new your knowledge will increase.I know this because you learn something new mostly ever day of your life.

This article makes me want to keep on learning because I want to be at the top of my game. In the article it said,"The learned find themselves fully equipped for a world that no longer exists." If I have learned than I will not be at the top of my game because I will be prepared for a world that no longer exists, but if I keep learning then i will be at the top of my game.

I think the quote means that people who continue to learn after they are out of school or college will survive the world but people who end learning there will have no knowledge of the future world around them. I think this because in the quote it says ,"it is the learners who survive; the 'learned' find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists". It can help you live your live because if you keep learning you will be ready for the world ahead of you but if you stop learning you will never understand the world.

alcatrazjail said...

@sethblog I think you are right about looking back when you are older and saying "Wow, is this really how much the world has changed!" There are so many things that can happen between now and when we look back on our lives 20 years from now. The moon could have a hotel on it and there may be flying cars. Who knows? The world has endless possibilities!

Dr Bubblesquash said...

Wow, this is an awesome quote! I think this quote means that there is no end to the limit in which you can learn, and if you stop, you'll find out that you learned for the wrong things. It could help us in real lie because even though we can never be prepared, we will always have the ability to learn and have an idea about what might happen.

Aphwa said...

I think this article means that the more you learn(no matter who you are)the more you know about the world around you. If you leave school or anyplace you learn than the world you know starts to fade, To summarize what I'm trying to explain is; the world is changing around us the more we know about the past, the more we know about the future. Know that I read this article I will be wiling to learn in life. I hope that every one else feels the way I do.

Aphwa said...

@DrBubblesquash I agree with you, "even though we can never be too prepared we can always have the ability to learn and have an idea about what might happen" I thought that was well put.

I think that quote means that students who learn are ready for the real world... I totally agree. They are able to take a life lesson and apply it to the real world.

AnnaDance2485 said...

I think that the quote means that the learners know how to apply the lesson to the real world, as suppose to the learned just being smart, because people think that only the learned are smart. For example, my friend is always referred to as the book smart one, and I am referred to as the street smart one because I know how to to apply thing to real life. According to scottberkun.com, street kids can go further with their lives because they know the real world and how things work out. I would much rather be a learner than the learned.

Happygirl232 said...

I think that the quote means you have to learn how the real world works. they have to apply what they learn in school and apply t to the real world problems. For example, if you run into a computer problem you have to think about what you learned in computer and apply all of the possibilities because you don't know if one of the strategies could solve your problem. imagine if you became a web site designer from your what you learned in computers. one day you thank your teachers for teaching you cause know you are a big success

I think that this quote means that when we find ourselves in situation that does not agree with us, the people who have lived their life wisely will know how to deal with the situation. It the quote, it says, "It a time of drastic change, it is the learners who survive", and that they "find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists." This probably is implying that they will know what to do when the time comes. They will not panic and apply their knowledge out to the world.

@AnnaDance2485

I agree with you. In your response, you say that people refer to your friend as the book smart one, and refer to you as the street smart one. I can see what you mean. Being smart doesn't always mean that you know the heights of all the mountains, and etcetera, it means that you will be able to survive in the real world when your time comes. I remember that when I saw people talking to each other, I saw them saying, "You're really smart!" it got me thinking about the same thing you wrote about here.

I think this quote is telling people that you need to continue to learn more because the world is always changing. In the quote Eric Hoffer says, "In a time of drastic change it is the learners who survive...". The world is always changing and things are always being updated. Since the items are always being invented and innovated,you need to stay in the know and continue to learn if you want to be able to live.

I think that this means that there is always new stuff to learn so if someone learned information from the 1800’s it wouldn’t be the same as in 2011. I think this because that it says the learners will survive but the learned will be in a whole other world. Therefore this means that learners know are learning new things but the learned are stuck with old knowledge and don’t bother to learn new things.

Pandagirl! said...

I think that the quote means that the learners still have more to learn so they can learn about the new change while the learned have already learned about the "past". It says in the quote that the learned find themselves fully equipped to live in a word that no longer exists, so it is saying to me that the learners can learn about the new change.

This quote, to me, means that the adults or teachers that have 'learned' are more aware of the past while students that are learning are being more aware of the past and future of the world because adults have seen the changes that have happened to our world throughout their lives while we are now learning both. In the quote is says, "The 'learned' find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that does not exist". Another example is, "In a time of drastic change it is the learners who survive". This shows that adults have already learned and lived through the past but, now that they feel more prepared , the world has changed, the students that are learning will be more aware of the past and are living towards their future. This can help me live my life by telling me that the world will always be changing and to keep learning to survive.

maia said...

I think this quote means that in order to live when things change you must adapt. I think this because it also says those who learned find themselves in a world that doesn't exsist which i pecive as meaning the should have adapted before it was to late. Also it says that the learners survive which means to me that they adapted and left whatever used to be behind and started new.

Imagine11 said...

@maia I believe that your post is completely correct because you talked about how the quote mostly talks about adapting and learning about the past and present. Like for example you said, " This quote means that in order to live when things change you must adapt". This really explained how the quote is about how students are adapting to the world now.

candysampson said...

I believe that this quote is very true because it is easier to adapt to new things and not be lost in the past. If you adapt very quickly, it is extremely easy to learn the ways of a new world, or anything new for that matter. If you think you have already learned everything, then there is no room to adapt and there is a better chance that you will be lost in a world that has been and not prepare yourself for the world that will come.

Grace S. said...

I really like and agree with your opinion on this quote!
In my opinion also, it does say that we are ready for the real world. I think that it can help me live my life by basically saying that there is constant change. As an example, the quote stated, "in a time of drastic change", meaning that in life, us as humans go through many changes, helping helping prepare us for the world.

JVG412 said...

I think this quotes means that we are learning what's not even there. I say this because in the text it quotes that we "find ourselves fully equipped for a world that no longer exists." So that's why I said it means learning what's not there.

Katelyn O. said...

I believe this quote says that the learned have stopped and are not learning anymore. They have learned but are not learning anymore. In the quote it says the learners will survive. The learners are going to survive because they are the ones who are still learning. This means that the people who have learned are not going to be ready for what is to come. I think this will help me in life because I will know not to be the learned, but to keep learning.

Katelyn O. said...

@sethblog I really agree with your statement on how when you are older you could look back at the world that you lived in that no longer exists. I think that it was a very meaningful statement because in your comment you related it to your own life. I also think that when I am older I will think the same thing.

Kevin O said...

I think this quote means that those who continue and want rn will adapt to change and therefore, "survive". Those who don't want to learn or feel that they know everything, will not accept change and therefore will not be able to "survive". This will help me live my life because change is always happening and there is always something to learn.

Marissa S. said...

I think this qoute means that the learned are ready for anything and have all the noledge they need. Also they have the tools to help them succeed because they choose to learn. People who don't choose to learn don't have the tools they need. In the article it says the 'learned' find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists. This means they could be able to live in difficult times. I think this because if someone is willing to learn then then they have the key to success

Marissa S. said...

@maia I agree with you, this qoute does reffer to adapting to the past and present. Being in a world that doesn't exist could be past or present. haveing the tools to live in the past or present is what helps you adapt. Beingable to adapt means you have learned.

m&m16 said...

I think this quote means that the learners will know what to do but the learned will know things that won't help in current life because learners will always be learning knew information to help them with the world and life but the learned have already learned what they think they need which might not help in the real life world. I know this because those that are open to new ideas and are always learning, the learner, will always know whats happening and how to apply their knowledge to life, whereas the learned who think they have learned everthing of past and facts that can't help them in the present world and life. This shows that the learner will always find solutions to lifes problems when the learned will have information that can't get them through situations today.

Ryan said...

I think this quote means that if we can't adapt, then we will not be able to survive for very long. Learners are students like us and we keep learning so that when we grow up, we will be able to sustain ourselves. Then when everything changes, we will not be able tolive unless we can adapt.

Peter P said...

I think this quote means that the learners will survive better in their lives because it says,"In a time of drastic change it is the learners who survive." This can help me live my life by me to keep on trying to learn every day. Therefore, your life will be more successful if you keep on trying to learn

Peter P said...

@Ryan
I think your idea is pretty true because you said,"If we can't adapt, then we will not be able to survive for very long." Therefore, your idea is pretty true because if people don't adapt, then people won't be able to survive.

I agree with sethblog because the world is changing and how the teachers see it now we will see it complexly different. Technology is increasing dermasticly only from 2008 the amount of advances increased by over 96%. Therefore you can see by the time we get older and look back the iPhone or some thing will be so un cool and out dated.

Man on the Moon said...

I think what it means is that the learner is always on a continual journey to learn and if the learner is not learning while also give information then in the end the student shall beat the master. This I think because if a person keeps on learning they are bound to catch up to the person who has taught them if the teacher doesn't learn anything. For example I will never out smart history channel unless they stop learning which I highly doubt will happen. So therefore I believe you should always be a student and if you want you can be a teacher but you should always be learning.

Man on the Moon said...

I agree with you Ryan that the learner will survive and the person only giving the information will be beat by the person only getting information. Like you said learners are students like us who learn so they can sustain themselves. So therefore you must always be learning even if you are a teacher or else those who you looked down as once novices will have surpassed you and would have sustained quicker and in a better situation than you.

Logan S. said...

The quote means if you keep learning then you will get farther in life then all the rest. I think that this is a inspiring comment because it makes you want to do better in school so you have better life. In the text it said that the learners survive and the learned find them selves fully equipped to face the world. I know this because smarter people go to better colleges and get better jobs which will get them more money. But the people who don't care about there grades will get into a bad college or won't get into college at all and that leads to having not alot of money.

Logan S. said...

I agree with you Peter P because the smarter people end up going to better colleges, making more money, and having bigger houses than the people that do poorly in school.

I thought this was interesting because it is a very unique way to think.Evidence to show this is it stated, "Learners who survive; the 'learned' find themselves fully equipped to life in a world that no longer exists.

Cav98 said...

I think that that this quote means that people who have completed their education are less equipped with the knowledge needed today than the people still learning because the people who are finished learning learned everything needed when they were younger but now there are new thing that are you need to learn. For example a few years ago learning how to use computers was not needed as much as it is today. So the people still learning will learn more about newer things like technology.

Cav98 said...

I agree with Logan S. Because i think learning new things will get you farther in life. For example if you learn something new every day you will learn all of the new things. This means that you will always be a learner and never stop learning.

!DANCE! said...

I think that this quote means that if you already learned life you know what to do but the people that are still learning do survie because they learned from the "learned". I think this because people that have "learned" already went through a lot in their life so that they know all the answersand the people that are learning ask those questions so that they will know all the answers and become a person that "learned". For example your grandparents "learned", and the reason that I am skipping far enough to your grandparents is because your parents still do learn. These are the reasons why i think that the people that learned are more prapared than the people that are learning.

I think this means that learners adapt to other thing but the learned do not. It says the learned find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists. This means that the learners have already learned from people who are gone now, but however the learners learn new things by themselves rather from somebody else. This will help me in the real world because it will teach me to apply yourself to the world and learn new things yourself.

I agree with you and you gave full evidence supporting the text. "The ‘learned’ find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.” Shows the evidence that helped you support your answer. Nicely Done!

whencupcakesattack said...

I really think that this quote means that if someone older than you is done learning, they aren't equipped for life, because clearly stated in the text, "the 'learned' find them themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists" means that if a person who is done learning can't live in this world. Nowadays people are learning new things, no one uses what they learned when they were younger, so they were ready to live in the world years ago, but not now, standing for "a world that no longer exists".

whencupcakesattack said...

@!DANCE! I agree with you. I also think that your grandparents learned already and they learned mostly that we didn't so they are used to the world we now live in compared to what we learn. I also agree that your parents still learn because everyone learns something new everyday.

Devon S. said...

I think this quote means that people who learn do better in life because they are always learning new information. This quote means that since the learned think they have learned everything then they won't be open to learning new information. Then the learner will eventually know more than the learned. Also, the people who think they now everything are going to be lost because new information is found every day.

Devon S. said...

@whencupcakesattack
I agree with you because it is true that new information is found every day. It's also true that people who are the "learned" won't want to learn new information since they believe that they already know what they need to know. So it's true what you said about them thinking the world is still how it was when they were younger!

Anonymous said...

I think this quote means the "Learners" are the people still learning, meaning that these kinds of people are still readily willing to learn and receive information about the world around them, or how to manage new changes. They are unalike the "learned" which, according to the "ed", is past tense. This means that these people have already learned what they have needed to in their past and are not about to learn more. For example, "the ‘learned’ find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists." I interpreted this to mean that they still handle events as they did in the past and have not learned how to handle drastic changes present day.

Anonymous said...

I agree with "Ghost" on learners "adapting" to new things. "I think this means that learners adapt to other thing but the learned do not." I agree with this because in the quote it states, "it is the learners who survive; the 'learned' find themselves . . . to live in a world that no longer exists" this shows how the learners will survive but you can simply interpret that by being "learners" they are still learning the new ways of life while the "learned" are still living in the past.

@ Trevor
I agree with you. This is because yes, the people that have learned will get out of the troubles that come to them. I know this because when ever i ask my mom something she always has the answer and when ever my mom askes my grandma a question she always knows the answer. that shows that you are right.

RyanT. said...

I think that this means that people who learn about everything about and around them will survive if in drastic measures. On the other hand the people who are well known ( learned ) will know how to live in a world that doesn't exist. The learners will know how to get in and out of every situation possible. The learned will know everything from the people who have "learned" him/her.

This can help you live your life by making sure you learn everything you can learn and be learned by other people so they can teach you new things that you have not already learned.

RyanT. said...

@ILuvGymnastics99

I agree. This quote does mean people who know more that us and are known more than us will be more likely to survive in drastic measures and live in a world that does not exist. People who learn more do survive longer and do find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists. Those people will not panic and will apply their knowledge out to the world. They will also know what to do when the time comes.

Anonymous said...

I think this quote means that people who are still learning will be better at surviving in a changed world. People who are older and are used to the world will have a harder time surviving in a new world. If you are younger and less experienced you will be more likely to adapt and survive.

Anonymous said...

@RyanT

I disagree with you because the quote is telling you that to survive you need to constantly learn because the world changes. Hoffer writes, "In a time of drastic change it is the learners who survive; the learned find themselves fully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists." The learned are people who went to school but are content with what they no. They are like a species that doesn't evolve, when the drastic change comes they will be unequipped for this new world and die out. In contrast learners are not content with what they no and are constantly learning more and more every day. These people will be ready for the new world. Therefore the quote means that people who have learned and are done learning aren't able to adapt as well as people who are constantly learning.
