Art for Interpretation

Many people are intimidated when asked to interpret artwork.  We will be doing some interpratation of sculpture/painting/ etc this year.  To start off, I just want students to think about a piece of art and share initial feelings/impressions/opinions about it.  Personally I always revisit this famous landscape at this time of year.  Tell me what you think of it or what it makes you think of etc.Don't forget to SEW up your responses.

I think that this piece represents sadness and loneliness. It looks very dreary because you can tell its not sunny and the sky isn't bright blue and pretty. These are more sad colors and the tree to the right has no leaves so it can be represented as sad. There are no bright colors and no flowers , there are really only monotone colors like browns, blacks, grays. These colors are cheery and happy, but dull and sad. Since these colors are not happy, it initially makes me feel sad and makes me feel like all the bad things in life are coming out.

This piece makes me think of fall because there are signs of fall in the picture. The signs of fall in this picture are that the leaves are different colors and that the trees are losing leaves. It just looks like fall colors

cheerextremelover11 said...

This picture reminds me of Someone dieing. All of the leaves are falling off the trees, the leaves change color, and every thing getsb cold. just like when you fall off of earth, you change color to white, and your body and blood gets cold. Exactly like death

This picture reminds me of my Grandma's house in Vermont during the fall. The picture shows, to me a pond with a couple of trees around it that are getting ready for the winter time. Then there's a driveway on the way left side and a forest. (This picture looks sad but yet to me fall is sad because it means a cold dead winter is coming and at the same time happy because of the beautiful colors everywhere.) So, to me this looks like my Grandma's house in the fall.

p.s. I love the fall!

I think this picture represents the feelings of the artists life, I think this because there are really sad, emotional, and depressing colors. Also there is a lonely figure in the background and that could be the artist.I think that this illustration is the feelings of the artist.

CandyS. said...

I think this picture shows the artist's skill because there are many different types of techniques used. There are big brush strokes for the plain grayish sky, but then there are fascinating small brush strokes to make the leaves. Therefore, since there are so many techniques that bring out uniqueness, colors and depth in the picture, this illustration brings out the artist's skill.

When looking at this picture ,I think of falland dullness because of the colors and design of this landscape. The colors look plain, the colors are red, brown, and very dark green. The design of this famous landscape is some bare trees and some full tree's with fall colors. Also there is a feild that looks empty and dull.

Kayleigh said...

whencupcakesattack,I agree with you about the sadness and loneliness. The are dull and dreary. Most people think of sad things when these colors showed but some people might like this landscaoe painting because of jow it is drawn.

This picture reminds me of fall, sadness and loneliness. The colors are mainly browns with a little yellow and red. These colors are duel and boring. In the back ground their is a person in black looking around as if they lost someone or something. The artisit used their feelings to interpret it into a painting.

THE BIG RU said...

This picture makes me think about fall. It makes think about this because it is very dull and no color in the sky. The trees have leaves on them and there are leaves on the ground. In the background there is also a man walking around looking like he is lost. Therefore, the painter drew a lot of attention to me and also put creative detail to interpret their feelings into this piece of artwork.

Anonymous said...

This makes me think of a warm autumnal day because of the changing color leaves. In the picture it shows a tree with no leaves and a couple with red, orange, and yellow leaves. When the leaves are changing color, you know that it is Autumn.

THE BIG RU said...

@kayleigh I agree with you because I also think the painting looks like fall. The colors are very dull and their is no color in the sky. Also, the field looks empty like you said except for the man who looks like he is lost. Therefore, the painting looks dull and looks like the season that we are in now.

abc123comewithme said...

i think this painting sends the message " surround yourself with what you want to be" because it shows a tree with no leaves and then to trees full of beautiful bright red/orange leaves. this is true because if you click on the link in Shorvath's post you can see that their are 3 trees; 2 full of leaves and one half dead. this proves my point because the dead tree surrounded by full leaved trees might be an analogy to a person surrounding themselves with people they want to be.

marktex5025 said...

I think this piece of art is a little creepy. This is because in the picture, not only does one of the trees have hardly any leaves, but they sky is gloomy and grayish. Therefore, I feel like the piece is a little scary; on a piece of artwork that is meant to look happy, the skies look clear and blue.

Magicman523 said...

This picture's message is you should not get left behind because the tree with no leaves is ahead of the other trees. For example some people like to rush while others take there time.

abc123comewithme said...

@ candy S.: I definitely agree with your conclusion that this artist has skill. i agree with you because when i look at this painting i also see the fascinating little brush strokes, and the big ones to make the gray sky. another technique i saw was that the painter brushed browns, light/dark grays, and whites to make the sky look truly cloudy. this shows technique because other artists that are famous for their artwork use the same techniques. (like Picoso in " Starry Night")

marktex5025 said...

@abc123comewithme
I think that you're thought about the artwork Mr. H is really interesting and true. You said that the picture is saying, "Surround yourself with who you want to be". This is exactly what I'm seeing now that you put it out there, therefore, your comment is true.

Magicman523 said...

Aphwa is right, artist tend to spread there feelings into there art work and this artist might of been sad or gloomy.I agree

G-MAN said...

This piece of artwork represents loneliness and loss because of its dark colors and the single woman in the picture. The dark greys coupled with the oranges, browns, and dull green gives the painting a muddy feeling to it which looks lonely. Also the painting is devoid of light whcih represents friendship. On the right side of the painting is a woman with a white bonnet and a black dress. Black is a color of mourning which could be used to represent loss. The woman is walking away so she could be dying. Therefore, because of the somber colors and solitary figure this landscape represents loneliness and loss.

G-MAN said...

@123abccomewithme I believe you are wrong because the dead tree is not surrounded by lively trees. The dead tree is actually to the right of the others so it is a more solitary excluded tree. You can see that is is far away from the other three trees. The closeness of the middle two really shows how the dead one is excluded because it is so far away. Therfore, because the dead tree is not surrounded by the others but off to the side the message wouldn't be surround yourself with who you want to be.

Man on the Moon said...

The painting that I will be giving my opinion about is the last dinner and my opinion is that it is very mysterious. This I think because it has so many conspiratorial ideas going around about it such as that it was a message for the free masons and the knight Templar. Also there is others about what is actually happening. I could go on with conspires that surrounded but that could that could take forever. So therefore the painting has no direct translation of what is happening and what it means, so therefore it is mysterious

Man on the Moon said...

I agree with you G-MAN this does represent loneliness and loss. Maybe the painter Vangough may have picked fall because as you said this represents loss and in fall the trees have lost there leaves. So maybe it is saying that everyone loses something and the women has her head down with losses she has had. So she walks on this path to be reminded. So therefore I believe that this picture stands for loss.

pandanut12 said...

This makes me think of fall because it is a fall landscape. I know this because in the picture it shows two trees with brownish-redish leaves and one that's bare. Trees' leaves often change from green to brownish-redish and lose their leaves in the fall, so this piece makes me think of fall.

Language Arts Student said...

I agree with you G man because this picture does represents loneliness and loss because of its dark colors and the single woman in the picture. Most seances like this normal point in to this type of mood. Therefore that shows how the mood is set to show loneliness and loss.

Lauren said...

CandyS. I agree with beacuse this picture does show the artist's skill. The contrast in colors really stands out with the brush strokes are different sizes. There is a slight uniqeness to the painting as well.

LittleMonster1028 said...

I think the picture is absolutely breathtakingly stunning because of the technique. The technique is not using a lot of color, but making up for it with detail in the leaves and sky. The warm colors give off a vibe that makes me feel safe and at home. My favorite part of the technique, though, is how realistic it looks. I feel like I could just jump into it and have the wind blow my hair to the west while the dancing grass tickles my feet. The technique of this painting is incredible because the warm colors, the insane detail, and how realistic it looks.

I think this landscape is amazing because of the way it was painted. For example, the colors were perfect for this type of picture and it is a perfect landscape for this time of year. The landscape is amazing because of the usage of colors and the way it matches to the environment right now.

Cav98 said...

I think that this painting shows what fall is very well because the land scape looks a lot like fall. One thing that looks like fall is the orange leaves on the trees and the trees and the trees with no leaves. Also the grass looks dead and the sky is cloudy and gray. Lastly it looks like it is cold in the painting. All of these things come together and make this painting look like a fall land scape.

LittleMonster1028 said...

@Peter P
I agree with you because I also think the landscape is amazing. Like you, I think the colors are perfect for the time of year. The colors are perfect because they perfectly describe the story of Autumn.

I think your idea is wrong because to me it doesn't look very gloomy. You said, " The darkgreys coupled with the oranges, browns, and dull green gives the painting a muddy feeling to it which looks lonely." I think it looks fine. Therefore, your idea is wrong because you thought the colors made it look dull.

AVgleek17 said...

I think the artist was trying to show the negative points of this time of year because the meadow seems very gloomy and unwelcoming. The artist might have been trying to say that fall kills all the brightness of the summer, and makes everything look dead and plain. Because of the dreary colors, and dismal setting, I think the artist didn't appreciate autumn very much.

I think that this picture makes me think of a still, peaceful world when nobody ever dies or gets hurt. I think this because it a picture of a tree and some people walking past nobody is in a rush to anywhere it is just calm. In this picture the season is fall because the tree is just starting to loose its leaves and it has nice beautiful red and yellow leaves. the season of fall reminds me of relaxation where everybody is playing the leaves and is having a good time. This picture reminds me of relaxation.

Ryan said...

AVgleek17 said...

Whencupcakesattack, I agree with you because I believe the same thing when you said, "makes me feel like all the bad things in life are coming out." Like you, I think the mood is very dull and shows lots of cons to the fall. Therefore, I agree with your statement.

Grace S. said...

This painting itself clearly doesn't have much usage of color, but I think it is meant to be that way because of the time of the year, and maybe the painter just chose to make it that way. It reminds me of Fall, of course, but not in that colorful, cheerful way it would normally be thought of. It seems more dull, dreary, or gloomy, rather. In the landscape there isn't much use of color. Therefore, it doesn't really put me in a happy mood.

Grace S. said...

@whencupcakesattack,
I agree with your opinion. This landscape painting does seem very sad and lonely. This is because if you look at the variety of colors used, they are just far too dull and boring, meaning they are all very dark and not as vibrant shades as the pretty, Autumn hues an artist would normally paint in a landscape similar to this one.

Ali M. said...

I think this peace of artwork is beautiful because of the beautiful colors, and the precise lines. The orange leaves on the tree stand out because of the monochromatic background. The gray sky is hinted with yellow beams of sunlight creating a warm illusion. You can see the painting is painted with very meticulous lines and you know the artist used care. When you put all of the elements together it creates a peaceful aura. The piece has a softness to it that draws me in. The piece has a very unique beauty.

Ali M. said...

I agree with CandyS because when I looked at the piece I noticed the time and care that must have gone into it. CandyS said, "There are big brush strokes for the plain grayish sky, but then there are fascinating small brush strokes to make the leaves." This comment shows and represents the meticulous lines and care that were used in this piece. As CandyS said, the techniques brought out the uniqueness of the piece. When using these techniques I know it takes a lot of time and care. It also brings out the depth of the picture.

This picture shows fall is a great season because of how calm it is in this picture. This is because a lady is slowly walking by the beautiful tree, which has leaves falling, and it seems like it is so calm. All of the trees look beautiful, and beautiful trees aren't stressful. Since fall is calm, it is a great season.

Emerson18 said...

@ Ghost I agree with you that it looks like a peaceful world where no one gets hurt because it is painted with red and other beautiful colors. The colors make everything look so calm, and relaxed. The tree is slowly losing its leaves. The person is walking by with no rush. Therefore, the colors used and the way the picture is painted makes it look like a peaceful world.

Anonymous said...

Emerson18
I agree with you because the picture specifically portraits how great the season Fall is. It specifically zooms in on the changing of the color of the leaves. The changing of the color of the leaves we all know, means its Fall.

chocoholicdancer13 said...

This piece makes me think of peace and quiet. This is because there is only a lady in the background, strolling in a calm manner. The trees are not to colorful ,giving off an aroused look, but more monotone, resulting in what seems to be a gentle and peaceful breeze. The sky is cloudy yet alive and gives off the feeling of tranquility. When all of these emotions are put together, this painting results as a serene and placid landscape.

I do not think the woman is dying because she seems to be taking a walk, and dying people generally don't generally get exercise. I know this because from all the books I have read and movies I have seen, being close to death usually saps your energy. If your energy level is as low as the books and movies say, you can't even turn on the TV, much less take a walk. This proves that the woman in the picture couldn't have been dying.
(ps: some people just like wearing black; no offense)

Kibble said...

This piece of artwork although, intreging, skillful, and pleasing to the eye, the whole idea of the picture is saddening. This is obviously a painting in the fall. For me fall is just a depressing season, everything is closing up to seclude itself from the harsh, cold, unruley winter. In the painting there are two trees that are a dull orange color, along with bare trees all around. Orange is known as a warm color, so depending on the viewer this shade of orange could represent comfort, or warmth. But as for other people this color could represent a more unsetteling feeling, not very warm and joyful. Since I am the veiwer of this piece of art, I find the painting's purpose to be unsetteling, and dark.

Kibble said...

I agree with G-Man, because they said, this painting represents loneliness, because of the one lady in the distance who is all alone. Artists have very meaningful and emotional connections with their art, I don't think that the artist randomly put ONE person in this painting of fall. There was obviously a connnection between the lonely lady and the season this painting took place in. Perhaps loneliness being one of them.

Brian C said...

The painting reminds me of the transition between autum and winter because there are no leaves on the trees. That is what happens that time of year.

I agree with you because the artwork is creepy. For example the artist chose dull and uninviting colors making it look unpleasant. Also the tree on the far right is scary, creepy, and just downright weird. It looks like a giant spider which is creepy. In addition, in the background it looks like a old lady walking which adds to the strangeness of this piece. In conclusion this marktex5025 makes perfect sense because this artwork is just scary!

Ryan said...

I interpreted this artwork as sadness and depression. There was a lonely old lady walking in the distance. She is also wearing black, which is a depressing color. All of the trees haveeither lost their leaves or are very dull colored. The trees make thepiece more ominous becausethey are there with dull and no leaves. They sky is also grey which adds to the sadness.

Imaine11 said...

I believe that the artist of this artwork was trying to interpret loneliness and sadness because, to me, the way it was painted and its color scheme. In this painting there seems like there is a single figure dressed in black just standing there alone and, of the three trees in the front of the painting, only one of them is bare of all its leaves and almost looks like it is leaning away from the other trees. Another example is that the colors that the author chose to make this painting were browns, reds organs, yellows and greens, which made the painting seem more like fall and sadness. These examples show that maybe the author was trying to bring across the feelings of sadness and loneliness through his/her art.

Imagine11 said...

@Ryan
I agree with your opinion of what this painting is like because I also believe it is about sadness. In your post you said that there was an, "lonely old lady dressed in black walking in the distance". You also said that, "The trees have lost their lost their leaves or are a very dull color". These examples were pretty much what I thought of this painting so I can agree that this painting is about sadness.

m&m16 said...

The painting to me looks sad and cold because it is dull. The colors that the painter used are all dark browns and no bright colors. Also the trees look like they are blowing. This makes it look sad because its just dull trees, nothing that really pops out. It reminds me of a fall scene. Because there aren't any exciting colors and just trees the painting looks cold, lonely, an sad.

This picture makes me feel happy because it reminds me of when I was little and went trick-or-treating. This reminds me of that time because the leaves were orange, just like in the painting. Also, the orange leaves and plants remind me of the pumpkins I saw on Halloween. Therefore, the picture makes me happy because it reminds me of when I went trick or treating.

Avacodo said...

@ Pandanut12,
This picture also reminds me of fall because of the scenery in it. This reminds me of fall because you say,"The trees are reddish like they are in the fall." You also say,"One tree is also bare." These are two signs of fall because that is when the trees look like that. Therefore, I agree with you that the painting reminds me of fall.

!DANCE! said...

This artwork to me represents a dismal and depressing place. It also reminds me of a Halloween senery because the leaves on the trees are orange/red or gone. Also, the colors that the artist used are very dark and show sadness. This is because the sky is gray and it is very cloudy. Another way that the artist used dark, depressing colors is by making the ground look black and brown which are not usually pleasent or happy colors. This is bacause you almost never see a birthday party or wedding have the senery color: black or brown. I know this because I went to my aunt and both uncle's weddings and their main color was pink and purple or light blue. Black and brown do not meet the expectations to make a wedding or birthday party happy.

!DANCE! said...

@Aphwa I agree with you how you said how the artist might be expressing their fellings because that is what artists mainly do. I know this bacause dancing is also and art and many people choreograph beautiful things and they get these marvolous ideas because of their life. I know this bacause i was watching a tv show that had to do with dancing and somebody choreogrphed a peice honoring his friend that survived cancer and the dance peice was beautiful and everybody loved it. That is the reason why I agree with you on how artist express their fellings doing art.

This painting makes me feel calm because there is an old woman just walking in the background. She is all by herself, in the cold, brisk, autumn weather, just walking. Maybe just noting all the leaves changing colors, or clearing her head. She doesn't seem to be concerned with all the problems that could be going on in her life and that is refreshing. The old woman in the background makes me feel calm because of the way she is just walking.
This painting also makes me feel like an odd one out because there are all the trees that have lost their leaves, and then there's that one group of trees that still has most of their leaves on them. You can see that almost every single tree in the picture has lost its leaves, but then there are three trees that do have their leaves. Oblivious to the world around them and just being themselves. Like they don't have a care in the world. Just free spirits, being who they would like to be. The trees in the painting make me feel like an odd one out because of the leaves in the one area.

Hayley M. said...

@Kibble, I disagree that the painting is saddening. I feel this way because it makes me feel happy. I personally love taking walks by myself, and just clearing my head. I love freeing myself from my problems for just that short amount of time and looking at the world around me. Especially in the fall. Its nice to hear the crisp, crunch under my feet and have the cool air hit your face. I feel like I can do anything I want when I'm on those walks, and I feel like that's what that lady is doing. She's clearing her head and enjoying the life she has left.

My first reaction to this painting was how somber it looked. This is because in the painting it seemed to reflect the fact that the painter's mood in the fall is dreary. Therefore, to reflect his/her mood, the painter would use drab colors, and no bright colors.

This piece of artwork makes me think of fall because of the colors and the landscape in this piece of artwork. The colors make me think of fall because there is a little orange and a lot of brown, just like the colors of the outdoors in the beginning of fall. In addition, the landscape of this piece reminds me of fall. For example, there are a lot of trees in this picture. Two of them have most of their leaves still, but they have changed colors to orange and brown. The changing colors of leaves symbolizes fall. Moreover, a lot of other trees in this picture have already lost all of their leaves, which also symbolizes fall. This picture makes me think of fall.

I remember a piece by Monet which is a painting of a bridge over a lovely lake. This painting makes me feel very springlike and delighted. In the drawing, it has many different colors, and multiple types of flowers and nature. I makes me feel good because when I close my eyes, I can just imagine myself there, by the peaceful chirping of the birds and the gentle sound of the stream.

I disagree with you @Ryan because this artwork doesn’t remind me of sadness and depression. I also noticed the person wearing black in the background of this picture. However, you can’t assume it was a lady, or if he/she was lonely. There isn’t enough evidence. Therefore you can’t say that she was lonely, so that’s why this piece represents sadness. In addition, I looked up on a site called squidoo.com. It states that the color black is a strong, authoritative color. Also, it says that black is a classic color for clothing because it makes the wearer appear thinner and more sophisticated. So, you can’t assume that this is a depressing picture because the person is wearing black. I disagree with you.

I think this picture represents the desperateness of the artist. Its colors are gloomy and toned down. It makes me think of fall which makes me think of renewal. Maybe the person in the back want to be loved and be a part of something greater than himself, so this is why he is pictured in a fall scene.

So, in all, this makes me think of being uncomfortable and alone at times.

I thought this was interesting because you will have interpret art which is sometimes very complex. Evidence to support this is "To start off, I just want students to think about a piece of art and share initial feelings/impressions/opinions about it.".

What I incorporated from Van Gogh's painting is sort of a feeling of abandonment and loneliness. I believe this because the 3 out of the 4 trees featured in the picture are pushed close together with all their leaves still intact, while the other tree appears to be lonely lacking its bright, fall leaves and the way it is colored in dark colors. I get a feeling of a "three is a crowd" or a "third wheel" sort of thing in this picture. (Considering there are 4 trees here the sayings do not literally apply but still have the same meaning.) The color scheme of gray scale while the other trees are colored bright-ish fall colors and the position of the trees themselves all portray a lonely feeling to it.

Anonymous said...

@abc123comewithme....I did not interpret that, that way but it is certainly a possibility. I believe that it can depict a sense of "surround yourself with the ones you want to be" because there are 3 trees pictured together all the same with leaves and that one tree that stands out without any leaves. The one tree with no leaves could be the tree who wants to be like the others.

I agree with Kibble's comment about fall being a depressing season and how everything is closing up to seclude itself from the harsh, cold, unruly winter. I agree with Kibble's interpretation because the picture depicts 4 dreary colored trees and 1 out of the 4 is set aside or secluded from the others giving a feeling of abandonment and darkness. This follows me to conclude that my personal feelings towards this painting is the feeling of depression.

@Ryan T. I respectfully disagree with you. I think this picture is the total opposite of sadness and depression. Sure the picture may be a little dull, but the picture to me represents the starting of autumn and happiness. The person in the background might have been a senior citizen glazing at the beautiful tree, or a teen happily staring at the tree, or maybe even a young little boy or girl climbing the tree, and returning home. This picture, I think, shows pure joy!

I think this piece represents the odd one out. One tree is not as colorful as the others, and has lost its leaves. The other three seem to be towering over it almost like bullies. The smaller tree could be like the class nerd, being picked on by the superstars in school.

I agree with your statement. The painting makes me feel happy because of some colors, but sad because of the lone tree without any leaves.

I think this piece represents a dismal, dreary day, filled with sorrow. I think this because the picture is a dreary looking picture, with the wind, and the cold.

I agree that this picture looks like the odd one out. I did notice the smaller tree next to the bigger tree, and I could picture the nerd and the bullies.

This painting remind me of the pond at Wolfe Park. There are three trees, and tall grass behind it. It looks like the basketball court's view of it.

This makes me think of a place in Vermont that i always go to because the place is a road with trees lining it and i alway go in the fall. This painting reminds me of the road in Vermont near my house. It is tree lined and open feild behind the trees. Usually wheni go it is the time when all the leaves are changing. This is one of my favorite places to go in the fall. This picture is a great reminder of this place.

@whencupcakesattack i disagree with you because i think that this painting could have been made just after sunset. i think this because just after sunset when the sky is turning dark there are little spects of golden still in the sky and that is the same in this picture. So obviously this had been painted just after sunset.

@whencupcakesattack I don't agree with you because it is a picture of fall and fall makes me think of pumpkin pies, warm apple cider, playing on my families farm, and so on. In the picture there are 2 trees with redish organgeish leaves. This makes me think of a warm fire that you come back to after working picking leaves off the ground the whole day.
