Fireflies
Check out the song Fireflies. Listen to the lyrics closely, especially the chorus..."I'd like to make myself believe...". What do you think the meaning of the lyrics is?

I think the maening of the lyrics is that he wants to slow down time. I think this because in his song it says I'd like to make myself believe,That planet Earth turns slowly. Another meaining is that the singer wants to escape adulthood and back to his childhood life. There are many more meanings for this song.
I love that song! Also, I agree with Erin. When he says,"I'd like to make myself belive, that planet earth turns slowly," he could be wishing for his childhood life again. If earth turned slowly, then he would get to be a child longer. Also, in the music video, there are a bunch of dolls and stuffed animals dancing. Children love to to play with toys, so that could be another symbol. In addition, childern love to chase fireflies. And like Erin said, there could be many more meanings to this song.
I agree with both of you. this song is about a man that probably misses his childhood life that would like to experience it once more. Haven't you ever heard a grown up say "Oh i wish i was that age again... or somthing like Yeah, i remember the old days...?" Well thats probably the connection he is trying to make.
I really like Erin's idea about the song being about missing childhood. This is a great example of discovering THEME in something other than a story. I have also heard some people say that the song as a whole is about insomnia (not being able to sleep). Are there specific sensory details that create sensory imagery that would support this statement?
I do think that he is trying to slow down time but not to go back to his childhood. I think he may have done something in the past that he might want to do it over again. But I do agree that there are more meanings in the story.
i agree that this song is about him not being able to sleep and haveing wierd dreams becasue in one part of the song it says "i got misty eyes as they said farewell, but ill know where several are, if my dreams get real bizarre,cause i saved a few and i keep them in a jar." so i think it is saying that he is more afraid of what is dreams will be rather than if he can fall asleep or not.
At one point in the song, it says," its hard to say that i'd rather stay awake when i'm asleep, 'cause everything is never as it seems..." I think that this part means that sometimes life is hard and that your dreams and sleep can be an escape from whatever is wrong with real life, because he is saying that he would rather be asleep...and i think the insomnia part comes into play in this because when you have insomnia, you can;t fakll asleep, so there really isn;t any escape from life...so i think the song means that its nice to be able to just slip in and out of reality, but there are some things in life that you cant escape from and have to "stay awake" for...thats what i think is the meaning of the song.
I think the meaning of the song is because its about the use of drugs. He talks about the feelings of being high and stuff like when he says "I can't believe my eyes" because he is probably hilusinating. Also he thinks that Earth turns really slowly because he has that bad stuff in his system. This makes him think that everythings is slowed down, and in slow motion. When he says "Everything is never as it seems" he is talking about how he is seeing things that truely don't exist or are actually there because when your high you get a bad feeling. That is why you should never do drugs or any bad substances.
I think that this song is all about him wanting time to slow down so that, while he sleeps he doesn't miss anything. He wants to feel like, while he's not awake, the world takes notice. He doesn't want to miss anything exciting. The lyrics, "I'd like to make myself believe that planet earth turns slowly," could also mean that he wants time to slow down so he won't have to grow up, so that when the earth slows down, he can have all the time he needs to dream. The lyrics also say, "It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep . . ." I think that's the part where he'd rather be dreaming, like a kid again.
p.s. It was cool how Jewlz found meaning in the fireflies and in the stuffed animals and related them to him wanting to be a kid longer. p.p.s I disagree with Pintobeanz. I don't think this song is about drugs at all because it doesn't say anything relating to drugs. I might just think that because I took something completely different from the lyrics, but that's what I think.;)
I LOVE THAT SONG,and i think agree with erin that it's about slowing down and wanting to go back to his childhood and escape his adulthood. Also i think this song has some childish lyrics like"...if ten million firflies lit up the world as i fell asleep...". Lyrics like these sound like something that kids would say.
Yeah i agreee with everyone here...but i also believe in the song he is expressing his feelings about he cant let go ,he says he doesnt like goodyes, andhe doesnt want to go to bed beacause he is afraid the flierflies will go away and that the world turns slowly beacause he doesnt like change......or this guy has insmnia and is weird.
I agree with Erin. I do think he wants to escape adulthood beacuse in the music video you see a young man playing the piano in his bedroom with all sorts of toys and nik-knacks around him. so I do believe he wants to become a kid again and turn back time.
First of all I'd like to say that Fireflies is a great song! Like most of the people that bloged, I also think that he wants to slow down time so he can live his life to the fullest and stay as a kid longer. And in the music video it shows him in,what looks like, his room when he was a kid. He also looks very upset when he was singing, so he misses his childhood life. And in a few years I bet I would too!:( :)

I LOVE FIREFLIES!!!I agree with most of the people who have blogged.i think the song is mostly about childhood and how fast it passes and wanting to be able to slow down time. as time goes on we all have more responsiblilities and need to focus more on our future. i think the lyrics are saying that as a kid we don't realize the little concerns and stresses that we have now when were older.
I also agree with most of the people who have blogged except for pintobeanz. I dont think this song is about the guy taking drugs, but thats just me. The lyrics (to me) pretty much mean that he wishes time would slow down so that he could enjoy it. It's also might be about his childhood going too fast because of all the kiddie toys in the video.

I agree with Morgan, but I don't think the song is specifically about his childhood, I think it is about staying in a happy night, and never moving on because of something happy. It COULD be about the childhood, but I personally found that a little explicit for a song. ( Songwriters generally are very vague) but we're all on to something.

He would not write that for a children song also I think when he sings "it's hard to say Id rather stay awake when I'm asleep becaus everything is never as it seems" Means that when he is sleeping he can imagine anythig and become his inner child.
i think that the chorus means he doesnt want to go back to real real world. he wants to stay in his sleep where it is fun and easy instead of trying to survive in the unforgiving real world. he likes the weirdness of dreams and hates the realality of the actual world.
I think what the artist of the song is saying, is that he wants to be able to stay asleep longer. "Its hard to say that i'd rather stay awake when i'm asleep." "Everything is never as it seems." I feel like that is saying that when he is asleep everything feels like its going well. So basically i agree with Jewlz, except not on the "childhood" part. I agree that he wishes time would move slower while he was asleep. Or maybe i can just take the post-modernist view on it and say that he likes to sleep in. :D

I agree with the people who have blogged so far. I think that the person is missing there childhood and wishes that they could go back to those happier times. In the music video the man is playing the piano in his room. The room is filled with toys and several other things that you would find in a child's bedroom. The man also wishes that he could slow down time and not watch it pass by before his eyes.
I also agree with the bloggers sofar everyone is trying to grow up to fast and don't see what their missing untill it's too late. If we could all slow down time and look at what's right in our faces instead of trying to be an adult then we should all just stop. Ithink that this song is about someone who wishes that he could go back to his childhood when he sings,"id like to make myself belive that planet earth turns slowly" and that everything will just slow down or just come to a stop so that he could relive his mistakes or somthing but i love this song. It is one of my favorites.

I think the chorus means he wants time to go by slowly becuase he can't fall asleep and that it's hard for him to say he is ok with being awake. ...There are many more meanings.

First off, I i hate this song. I think that the theme of it is not wanting to grow up and wanting the world to slow down so he can enjoy whats happening around him. I say this becuase not only in the song does he mention he wants the world to turn slowely, but in the music video he is suppounded by toys that look like they are from when he was a kid.
I deffinetly agree with Erin. I feel that through the lyrics the writer was trying to say he wishes time would slow down and also showing obstacles in life.
I think the message in this song is that you want to make the best out of a regular day. For example, when it says" I like to make myself believe" means that he like to think of whatever possible and do it.
Sometimes I wonder if this song is merely about perspective and point of view...depending on where we are (physically and emotionally), we react to lyrics and ideas in different ways. What kind of perspective do you think the songwriter has on life or on dreams or on escape?

i think its saying that you need to live your life the way you want becasue you dont have a second chance to fix the mistakes that you made.
I agree with molly that, you only have one chance at living your life, so live it how you want to, not how ohters want you to.
