Use this post as a basis for discussion, questions, any communication that needs to happen around the novel. We will come together after finishing reading the text to have a roundtable discussion of literary elements, themes, connections etc, but in the meantime you can help build an understanding of the book here.

Well..... I feel bad because no one posted here so...yea. Does anyone have any ideas why Henry is always referred to as "the youth"? I have an idea of why he uses names at some points and at other times he doesn't, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about it.
"he" as in the author, sorry.
Looks like some people need to do some reading this weekend. I know Ali made mention of the same thing. Perhaps there is a significance benhind the title "the youth" that needs to be explored. Perhaps a symbolic connection?
I know that my brother just did a big presentation in english on it. I forget the word, but it is the same as saying "The white house declared war," when they really mean that "The president declared war."
So.... now that we're done with the book do we still use this post to discuss the story?
who knows...hahaha
"hahaha", in the next few days I will be asking you guys to come up with some questions that will help guide our discussion of the novel. If you would like, you can start posting questions that you think are important on this post. I will give you the specifics soon.
one thing i noticed that made the book a little more interesting is that Henry is so completely humen...completely believable. He is all excited about war, then he starts to doubt himself, then he does something bad and takes his guilt out on other people(Tattered Soldier) and then he tries to lie about the bad thing he did. HUMAN!!!!
So what does everyone think the theme of the story is? I personally am at a loss HAHAHA.
(I also agree with AF313)
I agree with Ali too, even if she spelt human wrong. (sorry, I'm a grammar freak) The theme I got from his book was kind of depressing, and It's not a people statement but what I got was "Life goes on with or without you" . Henry fled from the war yet it raged on without him. Henry went back to the war and it raged with him. He personally got his desired "red badge of courage" and though it meant a lot to him it did not change the main focus of the book, the battles. I think each character symbolized a certain group of people, Henry: the average joe, Jim: the fighter, Wilson: the good intentioned. It covered the war AND symbolized modern life to me.
So yeah, it's kind of dark and depressing, but that's what my sum up was. and HAHAHA Geez, Mr. H.
I totally agree with Dana!!!! That really makes a lot of sense!!!!!
hahaha. ( sorry i had to.)
GO ALI! lol
yeah ali's first talking back. well that i've heard anyway;)
Any other takers? Give me lots of varieties for the themes her guys, I told you I'm lost.
***here guys
I think that one theme of this book may be that you never really know aht is going to happen until it happens, or that any mental preparations you may make before something may be totally blown away in the face of the situation itself.
I totally agree with Ali. The second part proves to be implicit but relate directly to the story in an explicit way. (If that makes any sense)
Mr. H, only 3 people are using this blog and it's starting to irritate me. Tell the others to check this out. Katherine has asked for themes and so far we've only gotten two. I want to hear more as well, so TELL THEM TO LOOK AT THIS! and Hahaha
=======
hahaha - here is what I need. Those of you who don't have copies of the questions, go here http://www.studyguide.org/socratic_seminar.htm and check out what they are supposed to look like. I want to have a group discussion of this book early next week because you guys are going to write your essay on this piece of literature.btw...tell Tyler and Snajdski to get on the ball and join the fun
I wrote the questions!! ( a while ago, but i guess i was one of thoe only ones that had them then) so when exactly are we going to meet, Mr Horvath???
Half past never, apparently. Hahaha
yeah ikr dana...Horvath? we planning on doing ANYTHING with this gosh dang book? It'll be June and he'll remember ; ) "so guys when would you want to meet for "Red Badge of Courage"?" "uhh Horvath school's practically over"
I've pretty much forgotten this book........ Are we just giving up on it????????????? Come on Horvath, when do we meet? ( and your sarcasm in earlier comments is not needed. Negativity is not appreciated. Lighten up. hahaha)
I'm pretty sure that we have officially ditched Red Badge...=(
Yeah Horvath told ali and i in l.a. that we're not getting together to dicuss this book at all. Oh well, we read it like forever and a day ago and i don't remember anything. So yeah everyone, we read that boring, slow-as-molassass book that took us decades to get through for, oh that's right, nada!!! Oh well, the book was hard and wouldn't be very fun dicussing HAHAHAHAHA!
