Best Short Stories
Go find a short story somewhere...online, at home, siblings etc. Read it, if you like it post the title here along with a short description of the story and why you liked it. Then read one of the stories that someone else has posted, comment on whether you enjoyed it or not and why. I will start..."The Man" by Ray Bradbury (note that short story titles go inside parentheses). This story is about a group of intrepid space travelers searching for life and truth and the answers to the mysteries of our universe. They encounter an alien people who seem to have just had a visit from some unknown diety...very interesting stuff.

A short story I read was "Rikki Tikki Tavi" by Rudard Kipling. This story is mainly about a mongoose, Rikki Tikki, who finds a family, after a flood, and is very interested with them. He becomes very friendly with the family and makes friends in the garden. Everything is going well until Nag comes into the sroty and causes problems. I liked your story Mr. Horvath. It was very interesting with a topic that many people enjoy reading and learning about.
A well-known short story that I read was "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. This story is about a family that recieves a monkey's paw from a friend. There is a legend that the paw would grant three wishes, and the family believes it fake. I really like this book because it shows that every wish is not always good.
A short story that I love is " A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon. It is about a girl named Camilla who loved lima beans, but never ate them because no one else at school liked them. However on the first day of school she gets all kinds shapes, stripes, and colors all over her body and nothing can cure them. I loved this book because it shows kids that being different is ok and that there is nothing wrong with that.
I didnt like stipes kami because I didn't enjoy it. It did not get my attention at all
A short story i liked was "thank you m'am" i enjoyed it because it was interesting because you wondered when he would try to escape and it was interested to see how the lady didnt get thaat angry.
I short story I read "Wait For The Brick" is a great short story with a greate theme behind it, check it out at http://www.indianchild.com/wait_for_the_brick.htm !
a short story i love is "The Tell-Tale Heart". its by Edgar Allen Poe and descirbes a man's cunning plan and his gulit. very good for a short read.
I've read "A Bad Case of the Stripes". I enjoyed it because it shows that everybody has something different that we can't change so rather than being upset about it look at it as your special. "A Bad Case of the Stripes" is a book that is just one of those ones that I remember reading as a kid. It's very well described by Kami but one thing that I found memorable was when she became her bedroom because she was at the peak of her case of the stripes.
A short story that i liked was, " Thank You Ma'am".I agree with Shelby because the women did not give the boy a hard time after he had tried to steal her purse away. It was very interseting how she brought the boy home and took care of him. I think most people would not bring robber's in their homes. The women also gave the boy money to buy new shoes. It was a very interesting short story and i would like to see how another paragraph would have been about. i find it remarkable that the women forgave the boy after what he did, most people would have turned him in. What a big heart the lady had to be able to forgive him and then turn around and help him out.
I also liked "A Bad Case of Stripes". I remember reading that book when I was little. It's about how Camilla likes lima beans but she never wants to eat them because no one else likes them. Then on the first day of school she gets colorful stripes all over her and no one knows how to get rid of them. I agree with Kami about how it teaches you that being different isn't a bad thing.
I liked "The Ransom of Red Cheif" by O. Henry. I read this last year and i thought it was really interesting. It is about a boy who later gets the nick name "red cheif" and he gets kidnapped. The boy is very annoying and when the kidnappers try to hold him for ransom, their plan doesnt work out the way they want it to. I thought this story was very amusing and different. It was very suprising and clever.

A short story I found is called `Hope` on buzzle.com. It`s about a girl who`s put into a foster home because her mother had drinking problems. In the story, the girl is trying to save her sister from another one of her moms violent outbursts. I liked this becacuse it shows how terrible life can get for some people.
I like the story that Shelby said because it is a good piece of literature. Also because it has a good theme of "Some people learn from their mistakes." That's the theme because the woman caught a boy trying to steal from her and she told him how she learned from her mistakes.
I also think a good short story is "A bad case of stripes". I liked this story because it shows that everyone likes different things and that everyone is different. It teaches you that you should be proud of what you like.
i like the story that Bella p. said. "The ransom of Red Chief" was a very good story. We read it last year in 7th grade. It was about how this rich dads kid gets kidnapped and how thekidnappers plan didn't work out quite like they wanted. it had a very suprsing ending that i wont ruin for anyone who wants to read it.
I love short stories! All of the ones listed above are great. A classic is "The Night Before Christmas". Everyone probably already knows this one from their childhood, but it is basically about how during the night before christmas a man hears a noise downstairs. He silently creeps down the stairs to see santa claus putting christmas presents under the tree. Then, santa notices the man, gives him a wink, and is in his sleigh heading towards the next house. It is a very well written poem/short story.
A short sotry that I have read that I really enjoyed was "Thank You Ma'am." This story was mentioned before, and I agree with what everyone said. It does have a really good meaning behind it. The woman took in the boy and generously cleaned him up. It had a really good theme and lesson to the story. The theme I got from it was "Some people try to see the good in people." Overall this story was not only interesting, but it had a good meaning.
My favorite short story is probably "Thank You, ma'am." This is a terrific short story and it shows how some people don't know who others are until they make contact. The boy assumed the lady was mean because she was hitting him, but later in the story he finds her helpful and caring.
A short story i found that i enjoyed was "Two Frogs" Its about a group of frogs who were in the woods and two frogs fell into a hole, well the other rogs told them they were just about as good as dead so one of the frogs jumped even farther down, killing itself, the second frog tried harder and harder until he made it out, when he got up the frogs said didnt you hear us?
the frog told them he was deaf and he wasnt going to give up anyway.
@Zack England: I saw the same story, i read it and enjoyed it very much too!
I also read the book "A Bad Case of Stripes." I thought that it was a good piece of literature because it taught kids to be themselves and what they liked but I don't enjoy reading it because I find it to be rather boring and it never caught my attention.
The short story I read was The Wooden Bowl. It was in the "inspirational/motivational short story" category on the website I found it on. I agree with the categorizing of this story. It taught the readers that everyone should realize that everything they do influences other peoples' decisions, thoughts, and actions. Although I didn't find it very interesting, it was only 3 paragraphs so I decided to finish it. Here's the link if you want to read it. http://www.indianchild.com/wooden_bowl.htm
In response to Lydia:
Thank you for sharing this story with me. This is a short, meaningful story that teaches the reader to be more accepting of others and try to connect with them.
One of my favorite short sories is a classic bedtime story. "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Brown is a story about a little boy saying goodnight to everything in his room before bed. I loved it when I was little and love i now. It is very comforting. It is like a poem because it rhymes!
Also to Lidia,
I read the story you shared and I think it was sweet. It makes you notice how things go by in life that we consider nuisances, but never really think about. We take it all for granted, but in the end, this story teaches us to be more accepting of others for who they are. You have to put yourself in that persons shoes, and think how you would feel if certain things happened to you.
I used to love reading "Goodnight Moon" as Caroline said, but also, "Thank you Ma'm" was a great short story also. I have read "Thank You Ma'm" several times before, and I think it gives the reader a good meaning of how you should appreciate what you have, and what others may not have. "Goodnight Moon" was one of my favorite short stories to read as a kid because I found that I could easily relate to it as a little kid.
A story that I found interesting is called, "Do you speak English?". There may be many interpretations, but I think the theme was about the value of life.
I really like the short story "Thank You Ma'am" because it teaches a really good lesson and you can make a lot of good theme statements from it.
Unike Xogg82 I disliked the story "thank you Ma'ma." it was a dull and boring story. A kid steals from a lady, but isnt punished instead she tries to help him. I don't know what lesson it can teach you. Who cares if you can make a lot of theme statements is that what you look for in a story? I don't think so.
Agreeing with zSchulz I really liked the short story "Rikki Tikki Tavi". I liked this story because i liked the way it was written how the characters were animals but were given human characteristics. This story just really caught my attention and from that I have really liked it.
I agree with Jeff. I also liked "Rikki Tikki Tavi." I read it last year and I liked that the animals never gave up. It shows that even the smaller person can win even against a much stronger opponent by having a good strategy. It was a fun story.
A short story that I read and really enjoyed is The Invalid's Story by Mark Twain. This story is good literature because it shows that friends are willing to do anything to make others happy. This was a really good story.
I agree with most of the short stories. One I liked when I was younger was "Goodnight Moon" as Caroline said. Although, I don't like it as much now because I think it is kind of pointless. Saying goodnight to everything in your room. I do agree that she said it was conforting though.
A short story that I found was "Mountain Story". It tells you that when the boy yelled at the top of the mountain he got an echo but really its life. Life gives you back everything you do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions.
a short story i found was "bloody Marry" it told you about a queen that lived in enflend and how she use to kill people and then one day she got killed but befor she said her name in the marrior and now if you say her bloody marry three times and supposly she rippes your eyes out
I am reading a short and easy story for my book club. Im reading James And The Giant Peach. For anyone who wants to getover ther book club, short stories are good.
my favorite short story is The secret Fairy Handbook. It is about a princess who gets invited to a ball, and needs to decide what to where. It also talks about Fairyland (the place where they live) and how all of these things need to be done before the ball happens like making food and decorations. I like thsi book becasue it is funny andjust a good little entertaining sotry. I also read goodnight moon like caroline. I love that story
My favorite short story is probably "Thank you ma'am.” I think that is has a great theme and an insightful message. Not everyone may get the same reaction as I did but almost no matter what you got from it, it should be inspiring and helpful.
One short story that i like is in the book chicken noodle soup for the preteen soul. There are so many great short stories in it. One of the short stories in it that I like is "Celebrate the good days" by a fourteen year old girl named Leslie Beck. This is a story about a girls struggle while her mom has cancer. Her grandfather had died of cancer and she didn't want to loss her mom. She always tried to help her mom and after 5 years of being terrible sick she became a cancer survivor.
I liked goodnight moon like a couple other people said. When I was little, I read it like everyday. Now, I think it's boring. However, that short story is meant for little kids.
Like Joey, I have also heard of "Bloody Mary" except I know a different version. It starts off the same way: saying her name three times in a mirror while spinning around, and then she appears on the third time, but the way that I know it is that instead of her clawing your eyes out, she drags you into the mirror and you never return. It's the same story but, just with a different outcome.
I don't know if they can be classified as "short stories" but I'm really into Japanese mythology, fairy tales, and legends. I think their interesting to read because they are so different from the stories I grew up on and most of them incorporate Shinto religion, which I think is fun to read about.
I remember a short story that I read last year but I can't remember the name(it was in the LA book). It was about a guy who was lost on a mountain, and fell in a crevice. An old man found him after he yelled for hours for help. He pulled him out with a rope, and I liked it becasue it showed that you should never give up.
Ever since I can remember by favorite short story has been the “Wolf and The Seven Little Goats” by the brothers Grimm. It is cute and reminds me of my child hood. Even though I'm not a child anymore doesn't mean I can't be a child at heart. This story taught me to never open the door to a stranger no matter how much they sound or looks like my mom. If she tells me not to open the door I do so. I think anyone would love this twist of the “Three little Pigs.”
