The Veldt

Feel free to comment/question/discuss the text here on this post. Remember that we are focusing on big ideas right now in our analysis of literature. For this week's discussion you should be prepared to talk about themes, symbols, and characters from this classic story. Also, don't forget that the 2nd Marking Period is still focused around the relationship between individuals and the societies they belong to. Think of "The Veldt" in those terms.

I thought the story was similar to the pedestrian, also by Ray Bradbury. I think this because the both showed the reader how life could be ruined by too much of anything.

I think that's very well said Bailey. I also agree with that. I had a theme that was similar to that because it had to do with too much technology and too much reliance on it. However, I'm having some trouble with symbolism. I'm not very good at picking it out and I could use a little help.

great story over all once you understud it. i think we all did a great job in the circle

I thought this story was a lot like the civil war because the children didn't want to change their way of life just like the South didn't want to change theirs. The parents were a lot like the North because they are the ones who wanted the change and for both situations it ended up in war.

I agree with Bailey and it was a great story over all. I think that our circle was very good too.

I agree with Bailey because a little to much of anything isn’t good at all.

I agree with everyone and their themes. The children got so dependent on the technology, that when the parents turned everything off, they went crazy. This ruins the family. Before the discussion, I wasn't exactly sure what the symbolism was. Even after the socratic circle, I still wasn't sure. I think we talked a little about how the nursery represents hatred. Does anyone have anything else?

in this story i thought there were many symbols and thought i was a very interesting discussion

During the discussion, many people in the beginning of the circle said that the children were the "bad guys" because they were selfish and basically murdered their parents. However, the parents were at fault just as much. If they hadn't been so lazy from the beginning, and would have taken the responsibility to raise their OWN children, none of this would've happened. I think that by the end of the circle we had established that both the children and parents were at fault.

I agree with Bailey, that this and The Pedestrian are similar. They are both saying that too much of anything is not good. People become to dependent on things and rely on it, which is bad.

I also agree with Bailey that The Veldt is similar to the Pedestrian because in each story everyone is dependent on something and it shows the reader that if you become too dependent on something it isn't good for you or your family.

Coming out of the circle, I got that the nursery was symbolism for the kids' minds, and the veldt represented anger or madness. Throughout the story, it told how the images of the nursary changed from innocent things to a fierce african safari.

I also agree with Bailey and Devin that The Veldt and The Pedestrian are similar stories because in both stories the main characters both depended on something. Depending on something cana really affect you or your family in a negative way and this is exactly what happens in The Veldt.

I thought the story was similar to the pedestrian, because they both teach you that if you let technology it will take over your life, just as Bailey and Devin thought.

i agree with baily and also katherine. This story reminded me of the pedestrian by ray bradbury becaseu it showed a futuristic world where people's lives get ruined because they have too much of one thing. It also remingds me of the saying," You cant have too much of a good thing" these stories show how you can have too much of a good thing.

Great story overall, but it was very confusing. I had to read it about 4 times to understand it, once I understood it I was fine. The socratic cirlce in class was not so good for others, but I believe I did my part in talking.

I agree with Bri.. it was confusing at first and you did have to read it a couple times but in the end the story was similar to the Pedestrian because both stories are about technology and how it can take over your life.

I thought this was a good story of symbolism, for example the nursery. It also reminded me of the short story "The pedestrian" because of its use of symbolism. It was very confusing at first, but if you read it over again you understand the story more and more.

The beginning of the story was very confusing but you just had to keep reading and eventually you started to get it...but i did have to go back and read the beginning again because i didnt really get that part.

I agree with bailey when he says that this story reminds him of the story "The Pedestrian" in the way that there is symbolism. In the story the pedestrian the symbolism is the bright house and in the story The Veldt the symbolism is the nursery.

I agree with both Colleen and Bailey, and how this reminds them of "The Pedestrian". I had to read this story about three times until I understood it. I was very cofused at what was going on in the story. I honestly had no idea what I was reading, but now, I understand it better and get a better understanding of what it was about.

When I read this story, I was surprised at how much I didn't like it. I don't like all the stories about technology and greediness and dependency. I've realized that a lot of Ray Bradbury's stories are like that because like what some other people said was that The Pedestrian is similar to The Veldt because they are about greediness and luxury.

Yeah, i also had to read this story about 3 or 4 times because it was a little confusing at first. But then I got along with it and relized what really happened. I like what Bailey said. How a little too much of wealthy life can take you over. That is exactly what I thought that this family was a little to wealthy and they just couldn't take care of that.

I thought this story was really creative. I did have to read it a few times to fully understand it, but overall I thought it was really good. I also liked the theme that went along with it. Like Anna said, a lot of Ray Bradbury's stories go along with technology taking over. The theme relates to the real world because technology is in our lives everday.

My class (3) had a great discussion on it because the conversation went all the way around the room like 3 times and back to the person who asked a question. It really helped that person because they got at least 15 different ideas.

I agree with blog blog blog because it dose remind me of the civil war because gust like the south the children don’t want to give up their way of life.
