Read My Mind
submitted by Maya - There is one line in the song "Read My Mind" by The Killers that I have been trying to understand for the longest time. I want to see what everyone thinks about it. The line "It's funny how you just break down/ waiting on some sign/ I pull up to the front of your driveway/ magic soakin' my spine/ can you read my mind?" What do these lines mean to you?

This is a really good question because students listen to music a lot and now they can read between the lines. They can share thoughts and different opinions, which is good. It will help understand things more. This song is very hard to figure out and can have many different meanings, i listened to it and i think the "can you read my mind" part is about the girl and guy in a relationship and the girl wants to move on but the guy doesnt. He doesnt want to say anything so he is asking her if she can read his mind.
I like the idea of asking what we thought about that line in the song, it was very creative and really got me thinking.
I think the verse is about a boy thinking while talking to his crush and is trying to think of something to say even though she already knows what he is thinking.
seems really confusing... I cheated a bit and googled the meaning of that song and found somethig that may help understand it better... It helped me interperet that the guy is trying to see if the girl knows what he's going to do next, whatever in the world that may be.
I think that this verse is about a guy who wants a girl to know that he likes her, but doesn't know how to tell her. So I think that he really wants to tell her but can't find the words so he's saying read my mind.
I think this verse is about a girl and a guy and they are a couple. I think that the guy wants to tell her that he loves her and he wants to see if it is obvious to her. I think it was a really good idea to ask this on the blog. :)
When i read everyones post they seemeed to be all in the same general area, yet not exactly the same. When i heard these lines i personaly thought that it ment the guy wanted to tell his girlfiend that he loves her but he didn't know how to word it just write so he tells her to read his mind.
to tell you the truth, i kindof wanted to post a song up here to see if my classmates can get from a song what i get. But the line " Its funny how you just break down........can you read my mind" probably means that the girl is kindof goin crazy waiting for something that may never come., But then he comes upand accidently gives her what shes waiting for, This was just my first opinion.
I kinda agree with Devin. I think that it means that someone is trying to tell someone something, but not necessarily that they love the other person. I think that they're trying to tell them something, but can't think of the best way to say it.
i think she or whoever hes singing about is waiting for a sign about love when hes saying its right in front of her meaning him. also i think when it says magic soaking my spine means that since he likes her he gets butterflies and when he says can you read my mind, like i wish she knew how i felt..
I like the idea of students posting on the blog. I think others will be able to understannd better coming from other students. These lines are kind of confusing. But i think it means what mostly everyone else thinks. That it is about a couple and one of them it trying to get around in saying that they love the other one.
I think its a cool idea to do song lyrics on here and what they mean to us. People have all different thought. This song is quite confusing but ill try. Or if she should give up or stay with him. I clicked on the link to youtube and listened to most of the song. It talks about "Getting out of a 2 star town" and stuff. And I'm thinking maybe the verse that this post is about means that the girl is leaving. And the boy and the girl were always friends, but deep inside they were something more. And she's just waiting for him to say goodbye and admit how they feel about each other.
I think that the song is the opposite of Nicole's post. I think that the boy is leaving because he says 'I never really gave up on

He's ready to leave and he wants her to come with him but neither of them are saying anything. She's waiting for a sign because she doesn't want to hold him back and he doesn't want to make her more upset by making her decide the wrong decision to go so they both don;t speak.
Like what Jenny and Devin said I think someone needs to tell another person something really important but can not find the words to say it so he/she wants the other person to read their mind to make it easier for them to understand.
I agree with Devin also. A person is trying to tell another person something but doesn't know how to say it. I also think that it is about love between two people.

I really think this is a creative post. The creator is connecting music to language arts by make us make impkcit connections to the real world and out life, by making us read between the lines.....smart. But anyway i think the line is about this guy who is going to his girlfriends house to break up with her, and he's wondering if she already knew that this was coming.
Well, this took some thinking, but i came up with the guy who's singing the song has a hard time trying to tell his girlfriend that he loves her. I think he just wants her to pick up all the signs, thats where the "Read My Mind" part comes in.
I think the songs a girl who falls in love with a guy and the guy also likes her back.
First off, I love this song. So, because I've listened to the whole thing, I have a different interpretaion. I think the girl wants to brake up with him because he is going nowhere and he wants her to read his mind to see who he wants to be in life, but she doesn't. In the lines "It's funny how you just break down/ waiting on some sign" She doesn't see a sign that he will become someone and he thinks it funny because it's so obvious to him. In the next lines he imagines becoming famous, pulling up to her driveway and is magic, invincible.
I feel that these lines mean that the person is waiting for the one they love to "read their mind".The line "It's funny how you just break down" I think means that this girl, when she breaks down into tears, she is waiting for the guy to read her mind and figure out what she wants him to do. But even though this song is written by a group of guys, I think it is written from the girl's point of view.
I really love this song, and I love trying to read between the lines in music. I love to try to figure out what the meaning of the song is, or what the message behind it is trying to come across.
At first read, I thought that it meant that he was cheating on her, and she was sad and just wanted it to magically stop without her telling him. Nice choice by putting a lyric on the blog. I think we should al do that because its more interesting.
I find it funny how some people say they're in love and others say they're braking up. seems to me there is a miss reading of tone.
I think that there is this girl who is trying to tell a guy how she really feels about him. But she is really nervous at how he will react. I also kind of think that she seems to think that he might feel the same way towards her as she does towards him.
I think that it is about a relationship between a girl and a boy. It seems like the girl is waiting for the guy to make the first move the way it says "Waiting for some sign". the boy seems nervous the way he says "magic soaking my spine" or he could be excited and he is asking the girl to "read his mind". In other words think about why he is there at her house. It almost seems like they are both afraid of rejection so neither of them want to make the first move.

i also think this about a couple but i think when it says "magic" this is like there relatinship is so good that its almost surreal and that when it says "can you read my mind" is like him saying that they are so close that they could be able to read each others mind.
I think the guy likes the girl and hes just waiting for a sign from her so hes like getting the right vibes from her so he like goes to her house and stand outside maybe threw pebbles at her window kinda like one of those love stories just wondering if she got the fact that he likes her
In my opinion it's about a guy who hasn't realized how much he loves this girl until she wants to leave him and move on. The song starts off by saying, "On the corner of main street Just tryin to keep it in line You say you wanna move on and You say I’m falling behind" to me this is saying that the girl does not think the guy feels the same way about her, so she wants to end the relationship and move on. However, the guy is determined to show this girl how he really feels about her, while staying positive and not giving up. Then towards the end, it says, "Woman open the door don't let it sting I wanna breathe that fire again She said I don’t mind if you don’t mind 'Cause i don’t shine id you don’t shine." I think many people over looked that its the girl saying this, so that indicates that the guy finally got what he wanted, because he never gave up trying. The lines that Maya did her blog on, mean that sometimes instead of waiting on some sign, we have to go out and do what we need to do.
The only thing I don’t understand is why the official music video takes place in Japan...
Well I myself have never heard the song but if it is in a minor my guess is that its about breaking up because usually minors have a melancholy feel to them so if its in a minor its probably not about a relationship going well or a boy with a cute little crush on a girl. Oh, and Kami, to answer your question it probably takes place in Japan because Japan amazing.
After re-thinking this for about a week, I think it may be about what Kami said, how the guy loves this girl, but doesn`t realise until she wants to move on. I think it could kidna be around that idea, where he`s trying to convince her to stay.
I agree with Kami and Jackie because I also think that the guy loves the girl but he doesn't realize it untill she moves on.
I think I might have some understanding of the lines but I'm having trouble with one of them. I can't at all figure out what "With magic soakin' my spine" could mean. I think what this line means could change what I think about the verse.

I just listened to this and I think the entire song is about this relationship between a boy and a girl where the girl is barely holding on and looking for a reason to break up, while the boy is still in love and wishes the girl could read his mind to know how much he loves her. This line in particular means to me that the girl is an emotional rec doing all she can to get out of the relationship, while the boy is trying to act like everything is normal.
I think that these lines mean that the girl wants to break up with the guy, and he can tell that, but he doesn't want to break up with her. I think this because, it says, "It's funny how you just break down/ waiting on some sign/... can you read my mind?" meaning that he feels that things aren't going good, and then he is sure that they are done as a couple, once she pulls into his driveway. He is upset because he doesn’t want things to be through with them but he is reading her signs about how she is feeling.
I think that the lines mean that a guy really likes a girl but doesn't know how to say it or tell her. And with the part that says "soakin my spine" I think that's an indication of him being nervous and then "can you read my mind" is saying that he wants her to be able to know what he's thinking so he doesn't have to tell her in person.

Like everybody else, i think that the lines have to do with a guy liking a girl and the guy doesn't know how to tell the girl. The guy is waiting for some sort of sign to let him know that he should tell the girl, and he is wondering if the girl can read his mind, and if the girl knows that he likes her. It seems like everyone can understand the first part, but no one could really understand the last part. I fully agree with pretty much everyone else that he doesnt know what to say or do to get her to like him so he wants her to read her mind.
As said before, I think this is about a guy that is in love with a girl but she doesn’t love him back. The guy doesn’t want to come straight out and say he loves her he just does things to prove it to her, and then asks "can you read my mind".

I have not listened to this song but I think it is about a guy who likes a girl, but she doesnt seem to notice, even when he makes it obvious. He wants her to just read his mind and notice that he likes her.
Well the music video is no help... But I think that he's talking about how this girl, probaly his girlfriend, is not happy with him because he's not showing his love, but he doesn't know how to do so he's asking her to read his mind.
Now that I read more posts, I think that a boy likes the girl but he just doens't know what to say next.
Like Julia, I'm reading all of the posts after mine from last week and it has changed my opinion on the topic. I agree with Kami's post. She said, "In my opinion it's about a guy who hasn't realized how much he loves this girl until she wants to leave him and move on." Looking back at the song, it all makes sense now!
This verse really got me thinking. I think that this is one of those "Are you thinking what I'm thinking" situations between a boy and a girl. The boy loves the girl and he expects the girl to love her back. Thinking about this is a great example of thinking outside of the box.

I think the song is weird and its kind of sad and depressing its not the best but its ok.
This was ok i didint relly like it becaue it was kind of slow song.
