Submitted by George and Grace - Spring is in full swing now and the temperatures are rising. This means school is heating up. Does the heat affect your concentration? Is this what causes you to slack off the most in marking period 4? Or is it more because the year is almost over or you would rather be outside enjoying the nice weather?

I think that it is a mix of both because I get excited for summer to start and I don't want to be in school because it gets so hot, especially because we are on the third floor so it is the hottest place in the school.
I think that a lot of students are anxious to get out of school and they tend to slack towards the fourth marking period. Some kids think that they don't have to try now but really, this marking period is so important for next year. I also think that the heat, since were on the third floor, is distracting many eighth graders.
Just as Leann and Abbie said, I think that it is a little bit of both because when somebody is really hot, they start to get really dizzy if you are that hot and that somehow does not make you focus on your school work. Also since it is very nice outside, people would love to go enjoy it for a day. So that is why some people do not really do well in the 4th marking period.
I agree that it is both the weather and end of the year excitement. For example, I sometimes find it hard to focus when I am uncomfortable and really hot. There is also so many things going on at the end of the year like graduation, field trips etc. and people may think the year is pretty much over anyway. Therefore, because of uncomfortable conditions during the last marking period and end of the year activities, students may slack off and do poorly.
I do not think it has to do with the heat. I think that is just an excuse for slacking. I do not think temperature can darasticaly affect someone's learning ability. On the other hand, towards the end of the year people think nothing really matters any more because you can't get detentions, strikes, and in any trouble. Also, people think they already have their classes for next year so they if they get a bad grade it doesn't matter. Therefore, I think the main reason of people slacking in the 4th marking period is definitely because it is the end of the year.
I think its both, they are excited for the good weather and the lack of cold air makes them concentrate less because of this, therefore I think its both.
I think it is a combination of things that cause students to slack during the last marking period. I start thinking that I'm too excited for summer so I stop caring about school. As for me, it doesn't get too bad, but for others, they start slacking right about now in the school year, like not doing homework, or studying. Also, just as it affects people playing sports, heat definetly affects my learning. I focus more on the heat rather than what the teacher is saying. Since there are many contributing factors near the end of the year, slacking happens to practically everyone.
I think it is a little bit of both that causes people to slack off at the end o the year. I know i would much rather be out in the sun and enjoying summer than be stuck in a hot classroom. The heat also lessens my concentration on what I'm learning and the excitement of the upcoming freedom of summer causes me to lose all interest in what I'm doing. Therefore I think when you combine the heat with the excitement it causes people to slack off.
I think the weather and the fact that students start to get tired of the work school comes with are both contributing factors to us slacking off a little, and not concentrating as much. I remember in the beginning of the year it was also very hot, and at the end of every single day, I would start to lose focus by eight period, due to headaches from all of the heat. Lately, I feel like all of the lack of sleep from early mornings to late nights is also beginning to hit me and take a toll on me, which makes me want to care a lot less about work, and sometimes even give up. The sudden nice weather is making me a lot more anxious about summer, and its on my mind more and more, so I think that both the weather and the stress and lack of sleep that have finally caught up with us, are contributing factors to students slacking off and caring less and less.
I think the heat does affect the way we concentrate because we over heat. During the summer girls complain about not getting to wear short shorts and tank tops because they are sweating due to the heat instead of concentrating on their work. Therefore, the heat does affect out learning.
I agree with Kami and I think that the weather and the fact that studens start to get tried of school work it affects there concentraion in school. Expecially since were on the 3rd floor, were its the hottest.
I think that it is both. It is no secret that students don't really care anymore by the forth marking period. CMTs are over and we have already been placed for our classes so many people don't see the reason for putting in the extra effort. The hot weather is also a huge part of our lack of concentration and effort. We don't want to be trapped inside. It is very uncomfortable to sit in a seat for 45 minutes on the third floor on a hot day. Most of us are literally counting down the minutes until we can leave or thinking about something different. Therefore, we don't do as well in school when the weather is hot.
i think it is a combinaton of both because when it is hot it is really hard to concentrate and since school is almost over everyone is thinking about the summer and they arent focused. also, when schools almost over, people start to stop caring about their grades.
i beleive that it is a mixture of both because students want to go outside and enjoy the warm weather. I also think it is a lot harder to concentrate and people dont think about school as much. Therefore, warm weather affects our learning.
I think it is a mix of both the heat and being anxious to get out of school. For example, the heat in the classroom can overwhelm a student, causing them to lose concentration. Then they will start to slack off on their work. Also, when it gets to the end of the year kids just want to get out of school and have it be summer. This is also causing them to lose concentration. Therefore, with both the heat and wanting to get out of school, students slack the most at the end of the year.
I actually think that it is a mix of both. I believe that how hot it is in the school can be distracting, as well as how much everyone wants to be in the nice weather.
I think that it is both that we want to be outside and the fact that it is so hot because it matters who the person is. For example, some know how to dress so that the heat is not a problem and they just can't wait to hang out outside with friends after school. However, some of us just hate the scorching heat and can't concentrate with it. Therefore, it is a mix of both wanting to be outside and also not being able to concentrate due to the heat.
I think that the weather has an effect on the students I for one when I get to eighth period start to think about jumping into my cool refreshing pool. I start to dose off and get off track in class. It also has to do with the fact that school is coming to an end. Soon we will be out and going to high school. We are so impatient to leave that our grades begin to slip.
The hot weather definitely causes me to lose concentration, but it is only because I am uncomfortable. I start to think too much about how hot the classroom is instead of what is being taught in it. However, in the last marking period my grades typically go up because I want to end the year with a really good report card. Therefore, the heat does make me lose concentration, but does not cause my grades to suffer.
like zschulz i think its a little bit of both. Most students just want to be outside hangin out, and they just want summer to come. Also, when the heat hits, nobody wants to be working, they lose focus and work slacks off. Therefore, since most students just want to be outside and when the heat hits, nobody wants to be doing work, i think it is a little bit of both.
I think its a bit of both, and I also think they feed off of each other. With the heat, its harder to work when your mind is set on thinking how hot it is and how you're going to die, etc. And then the hot weather makes you think of the beach, think of the outdoors, and on and on, therefore you go into what we call daydreams. Therefore, in both scenarios, you can't focus, and in both scenarios, they connect to the other ones. So, because you can not focus in hot temperatures or daydreams, that is the reason why students slack off in marking period four
I think that it is a mixture of both because they go together. When it is hot outside, all kids think about is going outside or swimming. They arent typically thinking about what is going on in school. They just want to get out of school. Therefore, since most kids are thinking about the weather and want to get outside, it is a mixture of both.
I think that the reason kids stark slacking off in MP4 is because of a mix of the heat and the fact that the year is coming to an end. I cannot concentrate on a test when I am sweating and thirsty. It is uncomfortable and not a fun time in school. Also as the year comes to an end kids including me begin to get ancy to be on summer vacation. We become tired with school and do not enjoy it as much as in the middle of the year.
i think that students think that only marking period 1-3 count and the 4th is just for relaxing, and not doing work. For example, many students get lower grades in the last marking period. Therefore, students get lower grades in the last marking period because they don't try as hard.
I think that heat as a factor effect us because many children get tierd and dont want to do any work because of this heat that makes us not want to consontrate. For example last year when it was getting hot and it was the 4 quarter i was getting lazy and putting less effort into my work because of this heat. Therefore this shows that the heat does effect students.
I think not only a combination of heat and school coming to a close makes students slack off but from experiences before hand because we were given more treats when we were younger. in elementary school where we used to have around seven or eight different field trips from April to June and the last week all you do is have field days and pizza parties or whatever. Therefore, we have come to expect things like field days and stuff
For me the warmth does affect me somewhat but what really ruins my concentration is the excitement for summer vacation. When we are getting down to the last 1 or 2 weeks of school, I always get really excited and all I can think about is summer! This always seems to apply to the rest of the school too because nobody concentrates.
For me mainly its the excitement of summer! Every year I can't wait and once it hits marking period 4, you know it's getting closer and that's all everyone can think about. People start slacking because they start not caring. You can tell this is true because a lot of peoples grades go down in the last marking period. Therefore, the excitement of summer makes us so it is hard to concentrate in school.
I think the fact that the school year is almost over is the main reason for kids slacking off when it comes to marking period four. When the weather gets warmer and you can start going outside all the time and doing summer activities it starts to feel like summer. Also when you are trying to enjoy the nice weather it is more difficult to find time for your school work. Therefore kids tend to slack off more then usual during marking period fourl
I think both of these reasons affect our learning because many kids think that school does not matter any more and they choose not to try and other kids are just so distracted by the weather theat they just cannot concentrate and the start to get bad grades. Therefore these two reasons will change the students effort and grades in the forth marking period.
For me it is the heat of spring and summer that causes me to lose my focus in school. I easily recall that in previous years I have had difficulty focusing due to heat towards the end of the year. Therefore with the assumption that I am not the only child affect by the heat in this way it is the heat of summer that causes children to lose focus as summer nears.
The heat only affects me a little.I just hate being in school while it is nice out. This is because I can't stop thinking about playing wiffle ball lacrosse or street hockey while the temperature is perfect outside. Think about it. Its hot in august too, but we seem to be able to handle the heat at the beginning of the year, after a long season of lacrosse, soccer, baseball etc. Most people want to play outside and have fun with a summer sport. THe heat is a minor factor.
The heat does have an affect on me during my school day. For example, today was very very hot. It was about eighty-five degrees today and I hated it. When trying to write a poem, I had a writers block. The heat distracted me. The heat is a MAJOR factor
I think we tend to slack off more because we see how nice it is outside and all we want to do is go outside. for example, when i go to school and see how nice it is outside i can't concentrate because all i want to do is go outside. therefore i think we slack off more because of the nice weather.
I think that the increase of heat makes us lose concentration. It also does not help that we are thinking about how much we want to be out of school. As we sit in class, our minds tend to become more occupied with laziness, and all we can focus on is the fact that we will be getting out of school soon. This makes it harder for us to get work done.
I think that the heat in our school effects concentration and the fact that I don't want to be in school because it is way to hot to sit in a classroom and try to learn because when it is really hot, I start to get dizzy and I wouldn't be able to concentrate if I was dizzy so I would rather be home. Therefore, I think that the heat has an effect on concentration and just wanting to be outside.
