Forget You

submitted by Ted - I'm sure most of you have heard the song "Forget You" and the explicit version as well.  This song made me think...Do you think it is really necessary to have profanity in songs?  Does it make the music better or worse?  How does it affect what we say and do in the rest of our lives?  Thoughts?

I think songs that are not expressing anger of any sort that have a lot of profanity are annoying because it does not fit the tone, lyrics, or the musical part of the song. Songs by some artists have at least two words of profanity or swears in each sentence or phrase even when they are not expressing feelings about anger or frustration. Swears are not words commonly wanted to be heard constantly and have an awkward sound. I felt that this use of excessive profanity that is not used to express a point, deteriorating the musical and lyrical quality of music, makes songs worse.

I don't think it is necessary for the profanity. Although they are expressing their own anger, they can still do it with out curs words. For example, they make the clean version of "forget you" and to me it is just as good as well as many other similar songs. Kids and teens hear the people they look up to and admire swear and then they think it is alright for them to do it. For example one of my . never used to swear. She started hanging out with different people, listening to different music and now there is a swear in every on of her sentences; even where it doesn't make sense. Therefore profanity in music is not necessary and affects what we say in a negative way.

Songs express feelings by the artist, or composer, may it be a piece with no lyrics, just instrumental, or the other way around. I think that the way the artist of the song that the language they use is completely up to them. I dont think it is right for radios to play the version with swears or inappropiate language however (because viewers of all different ages can be listen to that station).

Profanity in music is not necessary because it is pointless to do it and does not make music flow very well. If there are certain swear words in a song, they have to change it in order to play on the radio. For example, on the radio, they have to play the “Forget You” version. Therefore, it is pointless to have a song with swears in it if it’s just going to be changed. In addition, I think swears make the songs worse because they don't flow. In my opinion, the version "Forget You" actually sounds better than the explicit version. If you think about it, the explicit one doesn't flow well. It seems as if the writer stuck it in the song randomly. Profanity in songs is not necessary and makes a song worse.

I don't think that all rappers and songwriters use swears to express their anger. Some do but others i think use swears to fit in. Highschooler's and middle-schooler's for some reason like listening to rap and the swears in it. If their was a rapper that did not use swears, I don't think that they would be as popular because swearing is part of the daily vocabulary of a teenager and rappers use them to please the teens. Therefore, swearing is not neccesary for songwriters to use.

I think that profanity in songs are not neccesary because it ruins the song and is pointless. We all know what forget you abtually stands for, but honestly the songs sounds a lot better with forget than the actual lyric. Also, I think that for people to swear in their songs is pointless because not a lot of people like to listen to songs with profanity and some people aren't even aloud to listen to music with profaine language. Therefore, the use of swears and other profaine language in songs in a waste of time and money for the artists recording them.

I think profanity in songs are not needed because it can lower sales and you don't profit from it. Like how a clean version of it has over 4 million views, that would've been how much more views on the original video if it was "Forget" and not the other word. Therefore, swearing and profane language should not be used it is pointless and artists lose a little more money.

I don't think that you need to use profanity in songs. Now I’m not saying that I don’t listen to songs with swears in it i just think that it is more appropriate if they are not included. But there are some cases where it fits and it doesn’t sound that awful. But overall, I don’t think that swears are needed in any style of songs.

I think songs should be writtin howeveer the artists wants. if you really listen to any song on the radio the lyrics are written about what a person went through or how they are feeling. without feeling put into music music would not be as good as it is today. also i think some songs are trying to send a message out like pinks f**n perfect trying to tell people that you are perfect even if others say your not. even though the song title has a swear.

I don't think songs need to use profanity because it makes lessens the number of people who want to listen to it. For example, little kids who are like five years old are not going to be able to listen to songs by many artists on the radio. If songs didn't have swears, then more people would be able to listen to them, thus making the artist more money.

I find profanity can go both ways. Many songwriters and people for that matter curse just because they do, it's just a habit that you can't brake even in your writing. Others, however may be trying to find their point of view in profanity. Swearing gives out a tone that can shape the whole song. Personally I don't have a problem with it as long as the singer isn't jamming it into every sentence of the song because then it's just too much and plain stupid, but putting swears in sometimes just fits.

I don’t think swears in songs are necessary. I think the first two swears is fine, but when some rappers say 5-10 swears its just too much. Its defiantly not needed. So, after all I think swears are not needed.

Nick Z said...

I think that musical artists can be as profane as they want because it is their song and if using swear words is their way of expressing feelings then they can use them. Many artists use swear to express their feelings. An example is that if the artist is mad about something then he might put a couple swears in the song just to get his point across and to help us understand how they are feeling. Therefore, since a lot of times an artist uses profanity to help the listener understand their feelings and get their point across, i think that, yes, it is necessary for some artists to have swears in their songs.

ZoZo V. said...

See... I disagree with a lot of you. I think using cursing in a song is perfectly fine because that is just how some people want and choose to express their anger or any emotions at all. Freedom of speech! We all have it and as long as we do not aim violance towards anyone, we should be able to say whatever we want because that is exactly what that freedom is saying. Yes, I agree to some extent that it is inappropriate but as long as we have that freedom, people are going to use it in whatever way they want to. Therefore, if people want to use profanity to express feelings they have then by all means, they can go ahead and do what they want.

I think swears should be used in songs. I think this because swearing can help express the feelings. Also I think that I could help tune by rhyming. Cursing can show more anger than most words and thats how it can help express feeling. Therefore swearing should be able to be used in songs to help elaborate feeling in the song

Many of you believe that it isn't right to have profanity in songs. But in my opinion, I think it's fine. Sometimes it adds that extra emotion in a song to really help people connect. One could argue that it isn't a good influence to young kids, but if they heard it on the radio, it wouldn't have the swear in it. All radio stations play the clean version of a song. If they don't I'm pretty sure they would get arrested. Anyway, profane language in music can be good. It can basically make or break the song.

Matt S. said...

I think songs that use profanity are effective becasue if you are swearing in a song it shows the real emotion of the singer. Like in the song Ted mentioned, "Forget You", it has a clean and explicit version. The explicit version is much more agressive in the attitude due to all the swearing it has in it. The clean version isn't as effective becasue without all the swears, the singer doesn't sound as mad as he does in the explicit version. Therfore profanity is sometimes needed in certain songs.

I think that, depending on the song, it helps to get the mood across because it gives off a certain vibe. For example, Eminem uses profanity all the time and his songs are filled with hate and sometimes sorrow. So yes, I guess it is necessary for some songs so the artist can friend express how they feel if they think that strongly on certain topic.

AntA said...

In my opinion, profanity is not needed in lyrics. I feel this way because the kids who listen to this song will begin to think that saying bad words is normal behavior, for example There is a kid on youtube who had to be only 6 who sang the entire song! therefore thesde songs make it seem normal to swear which is negativly impacting our youth.

I think that using profanity in music is alright as long as its sending the right message across to the people listening to it. For example, if an artist is recording a song and they're putting slang words in it just for the fun of it then its not right because they're sending the wrong message to listeners. But, if they're using profanities as a way to express themselves in their music then its totally fine because its their style of music and its their way of expressing themselves and sending out a message to listeners. So bascially, using profanitites in music is alright as long as artists are using them for the right reasons.

Profanity in music is not necessary because you can have the same meaning in a song without it. Some songs are about broken relationships and adding those extra unnecessary phrases and words does not affect the meaning whatsoever. We still know what the singer is trying to tell us but now, the song can be heard by younger listeners too because it is appropriate for their age. Therefore, profanity in music is not needed.

I don’t think it is necessary for music to have profanity language in it. I think this because it influences kids to use the bad language and they think its ok to use one a regular basis’s. These days you hear the worst things come out of kids’ mouth and you always wonder where it comes from. Usually kids answer is music. Music should be clean and enjoyable. When you listen to a song that has swear in every line it gets annoying. Therefore, music shouldn't have anything bad in it and should be enjoyable!

Lauren S said...

I do not like when songs have profanity language in them because it encourages the people that listen to it, to use those words. You know how if a little kid sees there favorite actor or actress doing something they will do it it's the same for this. There are a few songs I know that had to be completly redone so it could be put on the radio. That is so dumb. In Conclusion, Music should not have profanity Language in it.

I think it is fine that songs that use profane language in them. This is becuase it expreses feelings much more, and is more realistic. For example, if you were an adult or older, and something bad happened, you wouldn't just say "forget you." The person would use other language to express his feelings. Also, it is not very realistic hearing someone say, "forget you," people would use different words. Ergo, I think that it is fine for songs to have profanity in them.

Personally, I think that whether or not there is profanity in the songs, the artists choose to write music that way because they are trying to get a message across to the audience. For example, in the song "Forget You" the artist is trying to get his point across that he doesn't care anymore and is upset about what happened. If the author chooses to, they could write a clean version to make it more enjoyable to listeners. But personally, I think that some artists are just using profanity to get their message across and sometimes to express feelings. Therefore, profanity in songs are nessasary in some cases.

Profanity is not necessary. There are other words that can be use instead, because it's a bad influence on the younger kids. Kids imitate what they hear and see. If their parents sing along to the song the kids will think it is okay when in reality it is not okay. Adults are supposed to be role models and examples. Instead of saying f*** cello-green can say forget and have that be the only version of the song. If it is not necessary don’t use it.

I just believe that the artist should have control of their work and not have to censor themselves. The only time that you should change and not swear is out of respect, like casually talking to your granma, but art (yes music is art) shouldn't be forced to change. And for the agruement about the children, they shouldn't be listening to them, especially if they're really young, like 5yros. Artwork shouldn't be censored just because it offends someone. (I tried really hard not to sound mean but I hate censors.. Sorry if I did sound snippy)

I think that it is okay to use profane language porque songs are the way an artist themselves and they should have the freedom to say what they want. Sometimes swear words increase the emotion in songs and make things more effective. These are some reasons that an artist would want to use these words therefore it is okay because it is their way of expressing themselves.

Kim M. said...

I think that profanity in songs can go either way because it can add more feeling into a song but if writers just put it in the songs to fit in with others than it is really pointless. When you listen to the clean version of a song and the explicit version there is a difference in the feeling that comes with the words. Other times I think it's just annoying to put excessive swearing in song for no reason or just to fit in. Therefore it depends on the song.

Danielle said...

i think having profanity in a song is pointless because on the radio it will get edited out anyway. also if kids hear their favorite singers using words like that, then they will most likley think its ok to use it.

Kevin T. said...

I think that rap artists could use profanity if they want to because if they do, you know what feelings they are going through as the person they are. For example, if a rapper swears, it means that he's mad; he wants to not only get his point across, but let his feelings out. Most likely if they do that, they will feel much better until another bad thing happens in their lives. So using profanity is bad, but it's the artists choice if they want to use it or not. Not us.

Billy P said...

I think that profanity should be allowed because people are expressing their feelings. In the world today, rappers use prfanity all the time because they are speaking their mind. The song wouldn't be as emotional without profanity. Therefore, profanity should be allowed in songs.

Ted, I completely agree with you on this. I don' believe it is necessary to have that kind of language in a song that is already changed to a version that people of all ages can listen to. For example listening to the explicit can cause you to use that language all around even by saying the title, or singing in front of parents. Also this can cause children to think, "Hey, he made a song with that word in it, that means it's okay for me to use it". That can be set into some kids heads but that is obviously wrong.
So I feel that having certain language in a song for no apparent reason is pointless.

I think its unnecessary because little kids can be near when the song is playing and, you know little kids these days, they would say it, knowing nothings wrong with the words. I know some parents would ground their child if they heard them sing that song in front of them. Though if you think of it, on youtube, sometimes when there is a swear in a song they would block it out. But if 'Forget you's swears aren't blocked out on youtube, you would think it's fine.

I'm going to be honest with you, to me, it doesnt really matter if a song has profane language. Some people have been saying that using profanity makes the songs much deeper and more emotionally real, but just listen to John Lennon's "Imagine". I'm 100% positive that there is not one swear in that whole song, and it is one of the deepest and most thought-engaging songs I have ever heard. So actually no, songs do NOT need profanity in them to make them good.

Emily Fry said...

I don't think having profanity or swearing in a song really changes my opinion on it. I feel that swearing is not necessary for a song to be enjoyable, however some singers and rappers such as Eminem have made themselves a reputation for being known as having songs filled with swears. Since he has been making music for many years, if he were to release a song with minimal to no profanity, it would probably cause some confusion and questioning about him, just because of his current reputation. So, I agree with most on how profanity is not necessary in songs, but I also feel it makes certain songs better.
