1984 Part One

Read the rest of Part One of the novel.  Use this post to ask each other questions (both deep discussion questions and also literal understanding questions).  Think about character development, themes, symbols etc.

As of right now, do you see a theme developing? If so, what is it, or what do you think it might eventually be? (remember to use S.E.W format)

As for rory's question, I think something along the lines of, some people accept oppresion, because Winston isn't doing anything to stop this drivel he's being force fed. He sits quietly while he is forced to be "orthodox", or normal. He just controls what he says, what he thinks, what he feels. He does all this een through he may be one of the only people that could remember a 'before time' before the revolution that wasn't all bad as the Party would like to you to believe.
For my question, I want to ask what you believe Winston will do? Will he continue to get more and more unorthodox? Will he just submit? Or will he start his own revolution with the proles?

I have another question because i'm a little confused. Do you think this women that he believes is following him is really a spy or is this just him being paranoid? Why or why not?

I'm not going to answer Gaby's question because I actually already know the answer but on the subject of Winston himself I find him a peculiar character because he is so different from the average protagonist. Usually I am drawn too the character and constantly rooting for them, but something about him makes me uneasy. It may just be the fact that I generally don't like the idea of an overpowering government because I feel as if the character does not have control over themselves but I'm finding that I cant fully trust Winston, mostly because he puts little trust in his reader. I feel as if he is not telling me something, maybe not an actual thought but a possibility in a thought. Usually the character is open but Winston doesn't seem so, therefor I can not trust him.
